    Anyone who studied American history knew of it. It's not as big a deal as they make it out to be though.

    The surrender of Lee to Grant and subsequent surrender of Johnston to Sherman was the end of the civil war, this was just a date they "heard" about that in Galveston.

How would celebrating this holiday allow people to heal and bring people together? I don't think it will, and it would only keep the racial tensions up for the next 50 years.
