NFL Player News - Week of 8/26/19

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

WAS - QB Case Keenum named Week 1 starter

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafolo

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins QB Case Keenum has been named the starter for Week 1, head coach Jay Gruden said Sunday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fire up the Eagles defense at home in Week 1 against Keenum and a very undermanned Washington passing game that will be without Trent Williams and probably Jordan Reed.

NE - WR Josh Gordon off NFI list

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots WR Josh Gordon (undisclosed) was activated from the Active/Non-Football Injury list Sunday, Aug. 25, and participated in practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon should be ready for Week 1 against the Steelers, who are hoping Joe Haden will be ready for the showdown. Gordon's performance in games without Rob Gronkowski and chemistry with Tom Brady is enough to justify a fifth round pick.

LAC - WR Keenan Allen on track for opener

Source: The Athletic - Daniel Popper

Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen (ankle) said he believes he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Allen has been seen around practice and the worry level has gone down since surgery was invoked (and shot down as a current option) for Allen's injury. The whole Chargers offense could be a downgrade if left tackle Russell Okung isn't ready for Week 1. Doctors haven't cleared him to rejoin the team yet after a pulmonary embolism was discovered this offseason.

CAR - QB Cam Newton sheds walking boot

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton shed his walking boot Sunday, Aug. 25, according to multiple media reports.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton's injury doesn't seem like it's going to keep him out Week 1, but it could still limit him and it could be something that gets aggravated early in the season. We will be watching the practice report closely.

MIA - Miami not ready to name starting QB

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen have been competing for the starting job during the preseason, and head coach Brian Flores said he is still not ready to name a starter at the position. Flores indicated both quarterbacks may play in the final preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This reflects on Rosen's play since a first week that saw Fitzpatrick emerge as the clear starter as much as it does Fitzpatrick's. Fitzpatrick might be better for the downfield receivers and Rosen the short-range receivers, but both will struggle behind one of the league's worst offensive lines.

DAL - Eight touches for RB Tony Pollard

    Source: ESPN.com

Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard rushed six times for a team-high 26 yards and caught both of his targets for 10 yards in a 34-0 preseason win over the Houston Texans Saturday, Aug. 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pollard looked good on his touches and should be considered a strong RB2 for Week 1 vs. the Giants if Zeke Elliott doesn't report. He has a chance to be a decent PPR flex if his role is similar to the one the team had in mind for Tavon Austin after Elliott returns. Pollard is worth around a 10th round pick at this point.

CAR - PK Graham Gano's status for Thursday uncertain

Source: The Athletic - Jourdan Rodrigue

Carolina Panthers PK Graham Gano's (knee) status for the final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29, is uncertain at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Joey Slye is 6-for-6 this preseason and should get trade interest from other teams that need a kicker. The Panthers could keep him if Gano's injury is still an issue. Either way, we are likely to see both of these kickers on NFL fields this year.

NE - WR Maurice Harris let go

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

New England Patriots WR Maurice Harris was released Sunday, Aug. 25, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At one point Harris was considered the best receiver on the field in camp while Julian Edelman was sitting. Now he'll likely be available as a street free agent during the season.

CIN - WR John Ross back on the field

Source: The Athletic - Jay Morrison

Cincinnati Bengals WR John Ross (hamstring) is participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The problems with the Bengals offensive line and Ross missing basically the whole summer keeps him off of the late round target list, but with a strong start vs. Seattle in Week 1, he could be a Week 2 waiver wire pickup.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake remains sidelined

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (foot) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Drake will share with Kalen Ballage and Mark Walton running behind one of the worst lines in the league in any scenario. His star has greatly fallen over the last month.

BUF - Robert Foster dealing with injury

Source: The Athletic - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Foster (toe) has been practicing even though he has been dealing with a toe injury he suffered during offseason workouts.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could help explain his drop from a hot finish last year to #4 receiver this year. He is still worth stashing in dynasty leagues but might not contribute much in redraft this year.

OAK - RB DeAndre Washington secures RB2 spot

Source: The Athletic - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders RB DeAndre Washington has secured the No. 2 running back spot behind RB Josh Jacobs after Oakland released RB Doug Martin. RB Jalen Richard will remain a third-down back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What this really means is that Jacobs is a clear #1 back who will get as much work as he can can handle. If you were thinking of targeting him in the 3rd/4th, you should be even more eager to now.

    Tuesday Update

WAS - TE Jordan Reed expected to be ready for opener

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (concussion) is expected to available for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not disputing Gruden here but Reed's long history of concussions has us very concerned for him. He has to be seen as a high-risk player here.

OAK - WR Antonio Brown finally at peace?

Source: SiriusXM NFL Radio - Zig Fracassi

Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown (feet) is reportedly 'in a good place' with the team, according to his agent, who suggests all of the issues regarding his helmet and feet 'are behind him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's hope that Brown is in a good place mentally and physically with their first regular season game (Week 1 at home versus the Broncos) right around the corner. Brown is a WR1 for Fantasy GMs and you can snare him at the ADP of WR10 (2.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ATL - WR Julio Jones likely 100 percent for Week 1

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Kelsey Conway

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) is expected to be a 'full go' for Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what the team was aiming for as they give Jones rest in the preseason. Fantasy GMs are expecting big things from the Falcons offense in 2019, and Jones is obviously the centerpiece of the passing attack. Jones has a current ADP of WR3 (1.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake returns

Source: The Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (foot) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see what the plan is with Drake, but we imagine the team is going to ease him into action. Kalen Ballage is the starter and Drake (when healthy) will likely serve as a change-of-pace back behind him in 2019.

CAR - QB Cam Newton working on side

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) is working off to the side with trainers Monday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Newton is dealing with a sprain here and was able to ditch his walking boot over the weekend. He's not concerned about his Week 1 status. Although we're still a little leery about the risk of re-aggravation.

WAS - RB Bryce Love to miss start of season

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Bryce Love (knee) will start the regular season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was expected for the talented but injured rookie. Love needs to get to full strength and get back to where he was a couple of years ago at Stanford when he was one of the best running backs in the country. Washington would have one helluva steal if Love can regain his skill. We'll continue to monitor him in dynasty formats.

DEN - TE Noah Fant back at work

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos TE Noah Fant (ankle) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fant was moving well at practice today. It looks like the rookie is on track to start for the Broncos in Week 1. We think he's a low-end TE2 but the system, quarterback and natural talent is there for Fant to have some TE1 weeks as a rookie in 2019.

IND - WR Parris Campbell finally makes his return

Source: FOX 59 Indianapolis - Mike Chappell

Indianapolis Colts WR Parris Campbell (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're still excited about the rookie, although it is a lower level of excitement with the retirement of Andrew Luck. Campbell has missed the majority of training camp after initially suffering a hamstring injury near the end of July and aggravating it around mid-August.

MIA - WR Albert Wilson working at full speed

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson (hip) is reportedly running at full speed and told Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald on Monday, Aug. 26, that he is 'excited' to play in Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was the plan all along with Wilson. The team wanted to ease him into action with this hip thing and get him ready for the start of the regular season. The veteran is not getting drafted in most formats, but keep him on your waiver-wire speed dial because he could make some plays here and there perhaps as a deep 'what the heck' flex.

KC - QB Chad Henne to undergo ankle surgery

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs QB Chad Henne (ankle) will undergo surgery Tuesday, Aug. 27, to repair a broken ankle. He is expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chiefs had to go sign veteran Matt Moore on Monday to be the primary backup behind Pat Mahomes. Chase Litton and Kyle Shurmur are also on the depth chart.

TB - WR Mike Evans returns to practice

Source: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans (leg) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Evans did not play in last week's preseason game as the Bucs are being wisely cautious with their star receiver. Fantasy GMs are excited about what he can do under new head coach Bruce Arians. Projecting him for another 80-90 catch season seems fair, and Evans has never had a year in the pros without 1,000 yards receiving. Evans has a fair ADP at WR8 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Wednesday Update

CAR - QB Cam Newton looking good for opener

Source: The Athletic - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) is expected to play in the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams according to head coach Ron Rivera, who said 'there's no doubt in my mind' Newton will be ready.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the plan with Newton. He's out of his walking boot and working to be ready for the season opener. We'll know more when the Panthers release an injury report next week.

CIN - WR A.J. Green sidelined until Week 3?

Source: The Athletic - Jay Morrison

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green (ankle) will be sidelined into the regular season, and beat writer Jay Morrison feels a return for Week 3 would be the best-case scenario.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green underwent minor ankle surgery at the end of July and has been recovering since then. Reports indicated that he would miss time at the start of the regular season, but there is no known timetable for the star receiver. It sounds like Green might return sometime in the first month of the season, and we should know more when things get closer to a possible return. Green's ADP is currently WR24 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - WR Amari Cooper on track for opener

Source: NFL Network - Jane Slater

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (heel) will not practice this week but is on track to play in Week 1, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper has been running at full speed and the team wants him near 100 percent so he can cut without losing that speed. Cowboys GM Stephen Jones said that Cooper's injury is more of a muscle strain. Cooper is a WR1 for Fantasy GMs with a current ADP of WR13 (3.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PHI - WR DeSean Jackson injury update

    Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson (finger) suffered a fractured ring finger on his left hand during practice Tuesday, Aug. 27. According to a source via ESPN's Josina Anderson, Jackson was told the typical recovery time is three to four weeks. Jackson is expected to try out a custom splint Wednesday, Aug. 28, and will decide if he'll play with it at a later date.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll know more about Jackson's status for Week 1 next week when the Eagles have to release an injury report. There is currently optimism that Jackson will be ready to go for the season opener against Washington.

Reed is really good when healthy but the problem is that he struggles to stay healthy. This concussion is the seventh documented such injury of his career. He's a low-end TE2 because of the injury risk Reed presents.

SF - RB Jerick McKinnon resumes practicing

Source: Bay Area News Group - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) took part in practice Tuesday, Aug. 27, for the first time since suffering a setback with his surgically repaired knee in early August, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a good sign for McKinnon but he is far from playing in a game. We'll have to see if he experiences any soreness after practicing the first time in about a month.

DET - RB Zach Zenner done in Detroit

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner was released Tuesday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions are packed at the running back position with starter Kerryon Johnson and backups C.J. Anderson and rookie Ty Johnson. Zenner is your classic banger between the tackles and a solid special teams player. We should see him latch on somewhere in the near future.

HOU - WR Keke Coutee unlikely to be ready for opener

    Source: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (ankle) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 26, but ESPN's Sarah Barshop reports head coach Bill O'Brien is 'not hopeful' Coutee will be ready in time to play in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coutee has talent but he's also banged up quite a bit. He'll have some flex appeal when he eventually returns to the field. Stay tuned.

KC - QB Matt Moore to serve as backup

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent QB Matt Moore (Dolphins) on Monday, Aug. 26, and he is expected to serve as the backup to QB Patrick Mahomes after QB Chad Henne (ankle) suffered a fractured ankle.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore has plenty of starting experience and can hold a clipboard with the best of them. Kyle Shurmur and Chase Litton are also on the roster but they are not yet to the point where they could be trusted as a No. 2 quarterback -- and we'll see if either one can make the 53-man roster or the practice squad.

SEA - WR David Moore will not go on IR

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Seattle Seahawks WR David Moore (shoulder) has a hairline fracture in his humerus. He received a second opinion and is not expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, sources said Monday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He will miss the start of the regular season, but should be back sooner rather than later. Moore is a great dynasty prospect to keep an eye on when healthy. The Seahawks WR corps is banged up with D.K. Metcalf getting his knee scoped last week. Expect Tyler Lockett to get a huge workload at the start of the season.

    Thursday Update

LAC - RB Melvin Gordon due back?

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to end his holdout in time for Week 1, in the opinion of beat writer Eric D. Williams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Note that this is just Eric Williams' opinion. Others aren't as optimistic. Gordon doesn't have much leverage in this situation, and the Chargers have not backed down on their stance. We'll see if Gordon accepts their deal, rumored to be around $10 million per year, or if he plays out this season on his fifth-year option and then hits the open market in 2020. Gordon's return would negatively impact the fantasy value of Austin Ekeler. Stay tuned.

DAL - Contract talks quiet for RB Ezekiel Elliott

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has not had any contact extension talks with the Cowboys over the past few days, but executive vice president Stephen Jones hopes the two sides can reach a deal before the start of the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is going down to the wire. Deals get done at deadlines so we have to see if the approaching regular season prompts action in this situation.

MIA - RB Kenyan Drake being shopped?

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake could be used as trade bait as the Dolphins pursue Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins have never been that enamored with Drake. He's been hurt this training camp and Kalen Ballage is the team's starter at running back. The Texans could use a running back with Lamar Miller (knee) lost for the season, but it's going to take a heckuva lot more than Drake to get a star like Clowney. The Dolphins have been the team most linked with trading for Clowney this summer. We'll see if something shakes out.

KC - WR Tyreek Hill will have a shadow

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Hays Carlyon

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill will be shadowed by Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey in Week 1, according to Jaguars defensive coordinator Todd Wash.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good luck with that. We're looking forward to this matchup with the Chiefs high-powered offense against a strong Jaguars defense. That being said, Hill could only need a couple of receptions to put up WR1 numbers in Week 1.

SF - RB Jerick McKinnon suffers setback

Source: KNBR 680 - Brian Murphy

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) suffered a setback with his surgically repaired knee Tuesday, Aug. 27, and general manager John Lynch said: 'it's not encouraging.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McKinnon was back to practice this week, but we wanted to see what he experienced after working out his knee. It sounds like what he experienced was discomfort at least and a setback that puts his status for Week 1 in doubt. Tevin Coleman will lead the way on the ground for the 49ers with Matt Breida backing him up.

SF - WR Trent Taylor likely to miss opener

Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers WR Trent Taylor (foot) likely will not be available for Week 1, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers have other slot receiver options while Taylor continues to miss time. Richie James or Nick Williams could play the slot and work as a returner.

SEA - D.K. Metcalf uncertain for Week 1

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf (knee) is making progress but his status for Week 1 is uncertain at this point, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Without Metcalf, if he doesn't play in the season opener, we'd see as much Tyler Lockett as he can handle. Keep this in mind when looking for a WR2 or flex option...or if you want to stack some Seahawks in DFS Week 1. They open up with the Bengals at home to kick things off in 2019.

CLE - No access for RB Kareem Hunt during suspension

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Kareem Hunt will not be allowed to be around the team's facilities during his eight-game suspension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunt will be able to rejoin his teammates when they get ready for Week 10 of the regular season. The NFL made the decision not to allow Hunt around the team, but WR Antonio Calloway can attend meetings during his four-game suspension.

NYJ - WR Robby Anderson day-to-day

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson (calf) is considered day-to-day because of a calf injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This injury is considered minor but Anderson's status for Week 1 is a bit up in the air. If there are no setbacks, he could be ready for the season opener. We'll know more when the Jets (and everybody else) has to submit an injury report next Wednesday.

BUF - No decision on TE Tyler Kroft

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills TE Tyler Kroft's (foot) status for the start of the regular season is still uncertain, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kroft could be competing for the starting job when healthy, but he's currently on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list. That means he could open up the regular season on the PUP list and be forced to miss the first six weeks of the regular season.

IND - QB Brock Osweiler visits Colts

Free-agent QB Brock Osweiler (Dolphins) visited the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Osweiler could be added for veteran depth behind starter Jacoby Brissett. We'll see if he can latch on before the start of the regular season. Right now, Chad Kelly is the primary backup to Brissett.

DEN - TE Jake Butt needs surgery

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) will undergo a minor procedure after experiencing soreness in his left knee.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a minor surgery but yet another surgery on his knees. Butt has played in only three games over the last two years for the Broncos. He's a talented player but he's had three major knee surgeries over his football career and this minor procedure makes it four times his knees have been operated on. Butt seems bound for Injured Reserve.

Jerry is saying Zeke will miss at least six weeks (unless Zeke caves). Looks like the Cowboys are playing hardball.

There should be a subforum for news. Sometimes it is in the way, other times it is all I am looking for. Would be easiest for everybody to have it somewhere else than pt.

Melvin Gordon is getting horrendous advice...I usually don't side with the Charger's brass but they made a more than fair offer to him. He is not an elite back and he is injury prone, take it or leave it.

Yea he not a irreplaceable type difference maker like Zeke. He should be thrilled if they willing to give him close to 10 mil per.

If i was Chargers I would pull that offer cause Gordon already a injury prone fukk, guys like him who hold out all preseason almost always get hurt when they return, hammy coming and how hard you think he work to return fast? They be no different record wise with or without him:

Don't get me wrong, he is a very good player and the Chargers are better with than without him. That said, he is asking for the moon, the Chargers were 4-0 without him last year and have some pretty good backup RBs and RBs are the most replaceable position in the NFL. The Chargers offered him ~10-12 million/per, he wants like ~15-17 million, no penetrating chance.

    Friday Update

NE - Did WR Julian Edelman Re-Injure Thumb?

    Source: NESN - Doug Kyed

Per Doug Kyed, "Julian Edelman caught his first pass of the preseason Thursday and immediately came up shaking his left hand.

"Edelman left the game, took off his left glove and briefly got checked out by Patriots head trainer Jim Whalen before going to the bench."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the Patriots so we won't get much information until the league forces them to next week. Edelman did remain on the sidelines after the incident so that's likely a positive. Stay tuned.

JAX - RB Leonard Fournette ready to bounce back

Source: Bleacher Report - Tyler Dunne

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette told Tyler Dunne of Bleacher Report he is in 'a happy place right now' after dedicating his offseason to rigorous training that helped him drop his weight from 247 pounds to 228 and cutting out the negative influences in his life.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette is a talented runner when 100 percent healthy. The problem is that Fournette seems to have more than his fair share of injuries, plus he doesn't play at a high level when he's not quite himself. We'll see if that can change this season. Fournette has a current ADP of RB13 (3.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

OAK - HC wants QB Derek Carr to air it out

Source: The Athletic - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden wants QB Derek Carr to let the ball fly this season. 'At the beginning of practice we work on the red line, the 50-50 balls,' Gruden said Thursday, Aug. 28. 'And when you have Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams, you have to commit to yourself throwing them, and same with (Darren Waller). We got to throw the ball down the field and if it's incomplete or we get the catch, we can always challenge (Al Riveron, the senior vice president of officiating) in New York and see what he thinks.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They've got the weapons around Carr to certainly do just that. A more vertical passing game means that Carr could have some monster weeks. The Raiders defense is a work in progress, so their offense is going to have to keep their foot on the gas in order to win games. Carr has a current ADP of QB22 (14.03) in 12-team PPR leagues and could clearly outperform that spot.

HOU - QB AJ McCarron throws Thursday

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans QB AJ McCarron (thumb) was able to make some throws before the final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29, and appears to have a good chance to be ready for Week 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCarron could be the backup to Deshaun Watson if he's ready for the start of the season. Right now, Joe Webb is the top reserve behind Watson with rookie Jordan Ta'amu also on the roster.

CIN - Knee injury for RB Rodney Anderson

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Cincinnati Bengals RB Rodney Anderson (knee) suffered a knee injury during the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29, and has been ruled out.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson, a sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2019, has talent as a hard-charging running back. However, three of the last four years his season has ended due to injury. We'll see how severe this latest injury is.

MIA - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick appears on track for QB job

    Source: ESPN.com - Cameron Wolfe

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick appears to be the leading candidate for the starting quarterback job, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Cameron Wolfe.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the way things have been trending for some time. Fitzpatrick could begin the season as the starter but eventually the team might want to see 2018 first-round pick (for the Cardinals) Josh Rosen. We'll see how this shakes out and how long Fitzpatrick can hang onto the starting job.

CLE - RB Kareem Hunt undergoes hernia surgery

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Cleveland Browns RB Kareem Hunt (groin) underwent surgery for a sports hernia Thursday, Aug. 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hunt is suspended the first eight games of the season, so he'll have plenty of time to recover. He is expected to need four to six weeks to get back to 100 percent.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills on trade block?

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills is a strong candidate to be traded with the Houston Texans a possible landing spot as part of a rumored deal for DE/LB Jadeveon Clowney.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stills has been rumored to be on the trade block for quite some time. The Dolphins seem to have the most interest in trading for Clowney but it would take a lot more than a veteran wide receiver to snare the star pass-rusher.

KC - RB Carlos Hyde likely out

    Source: NFL.com - Gregg Rosenthal

Kansas City Chiefs RB Carlos Hyde is likely to be released this weekend, barring a late-preseason injury, in the opinion of NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. This has been trending towards Hyde getting released for quite some time. He's simply been outplayed by guys like Darwin Thompson, the fantasy darling GMs are drafting as a handcuff to Damien Williams.

NE - RB Sony Michel improving as receiver

    Source: 1 No Source

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel has demonstrated improved skills as a pass receiver this preseason, Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears said Monday, Aug. 26. 'Much much improved, much better than he was last year,' Fears said. 'Last year I thought it was a lot for him. This year, he's pretty good at it, he's going to be very good at it.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michel only had seven catches last year in 13 games as a rookie. Projecting him for 20-25 catches in his second season is fair. Michel is the lead back for the Patriots and could post solid RB2 numbers for Fantasy GMs in 2019.

NE - TE Dwayne Allen a candidate to return?

Source: Boston Sports Journal - Greg Bedard

Miami Dolphins TE Dwayne Allen could re-sign with the New England Patriots if he is released this weekend by the Dolphins, in the opinion of a Patriots beat reporter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots are looking for help at the tight end position. Guys like Ben Watson (four games) are suspended and their top tight end is Matt LaCosse. Allen could come in and not have to take much time to get up to speed with the team again.

IND - Indy QB decision on hold

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent QBs Brock Osweiler, Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden worked out for the Indianapolis Colts earlier this week, according to sources, as the team searches for a backup option to open the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No hurries here. The Colts have made no further decisions as of Thursday, Aug. 29, and they may wait until after the weekend league-wide cutdown.

Hard to believe Hyde can’t find a place to stick. I remember watching him a few years ago thinking he had top 5 ability if he could just stay healthy. He ran so hard. Now he’s done. This is why no one wants to give these guys the big money. Their shelf life is so short.

    LeSean McCoy Released by Bills

News from Buffalo. The Bills have released RB LeSean McCoy.

From ESPN's Adam Schefter: "Surprise cut: Bills are releasing LeSean McCoy, per source."

There are two elements to this.

    1. What happens with McCoy?
The speculation now will be where he winds up. Houston seems logical. He'd see a bump in value there and Duke Johnson would take a hit. Tampa might make sense where he'd likely stay about the same value as he'd been projected in Buffalo. And of course, there’s a chance he could end up as a backup somewhere else and be barely rosterable. The timing for this so close to Week One that it's troublesome for him.

Our Dan Hindery wrote this morning: "LeSean McCoy is at that awkward stage of his career, entering his 11th season, where he isn't still as good as he thinks he is. Confidence is great in a running back but can also be problematic for a guy who may not be willing to accept a backup role or a low-level salary. It makes predicting his landing spot difficult. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a free agent a couple weeks into the season waiting for an injury to open up a starting role. I would let somebody else draft him."

So if you're drafting today, McCoy instantly becomes a very risky player. He clearly has the potential for value if he lands in the right spot. But that's a significant "if" right now. Our advice is likely pass on him unless you want to roll the dice he lands in a good spot.

    2. What happens in Buffalo? RB Devin Singletary gets a significant bump upwards. Our Sigmund Bloom said, "He moves up to upside rookie tier with guys like Justice Hill/Darwin Thompson, with more immediate opportunity but much less attractive situation. Gore and Yeldon now have a pulse."

Our Dan Hindery said: "Devin Singletary is still going to have to share time with Frank Gore but I don't think this is like Miami last year where they run Gore out there for 10+ touches every week. Singletary is going to be the guy. He belongs in that 5th-6th-round conversation alongside guys like Tevin Coleman, Austin Ekeler and Miles Sanders. The Bills offense isn't anything special but they've made some additions on the offensive line and Singletary is going to see plenty of targets as well. There is RB2 upside here for sure."

For some context, way back in June, we wrote a feature on What Will Happen In The Buffalo Backfield:

So bottom line, Devin Singletary seems to be the clear winner here. We'll continue to update projections as news comes in this morning but right now we see him in the RB30 to RB34 range. With potential for upside. Stay close to Footballguys.com for more.
