You Either Have It Or You Don't?

Do you believe this or can an average player become great with practice?

    Average player will improve with practice;
However, there will be limits to his capabilities based on his God given talent.

Talking more about athletes. Things like speed, strength, vision, timing

Seems like some people only have to learn something once and others take much longer

All depends on 1st 10 years...either raised w athletics and sports or you're not.

After that, if you have the genetic make up you can seperate yourself from the pack (pros from college, college from hs).

There will always be Doug Flutie/ JJ Redick/ Jeff Robulet/ Mike Redmond type hustle athletes who are warriors for sure but in all seriousness can't be considered the best athletes based on gifts....

You're born with speed, can't develop it.

You're born with accuracy, can't learn it.

One may be able to improve on things such as these a little, but for the most part, you either have it, or you don't.

As someone who’s coached college athletes for a few years now I can tell you both of those things can be learned. Maybe not from the most clumsy of people. And maybe the learning is just their already genetic dna being brought out, but you can definitely take average to good athletes and improve them drastically in both categories mentioned.

So you kinda agree on what I said that there can be improvement, but not enough to make a huge difference.

A guy born with 4.8 speed will never run with DeDean Jackson.

A guy like Jameis Winston who can't hit the broad side of a barn may get some lessons on minor improvement, but will never be Drew Brees.

But he still had the God given talent.

Do you realize how many ppl are walking the streets who had the talent to be great athletes but didn't even know it because they never had interest in sports and never discovered it?

If the millions & millions like this had ever pursued sports, there's a good chance that we'd be taking about other names we've never heard of being the greatest ever in sports vs the names we know now.

Who says he has god given talent? That is a loaded assertion

That kinda defeats the purpose of the debate

"You either have it or you don't"

So bunches of people are walking the street watching(OR AT LEAST HEARING ABOUT IT) pro sports players making millions and never ever tried a sport?

Don't agree with that argument hmanner

You can't sit in your driveway and shoot xxxxx shots a day and NOT gain accuracy? Come on

I just firmly believe that one of the all the greats like Larry Bird was born with God given talent and athleticism.

No way do I believe an avg guy can get THAT good from just dedication.

You HAVE to have the talent when it boils down to it.

    Just my opinion.

As for the other comment, of course there are ppl in this world past & present who never found their calling in all kinds of things, not just sports.
