    Think about it.

Rarely struck out, walked a lot, last player to bat over .400

Could have put up even better numbers but he served in the Military for 3 years when he was in his prime.

Was just looking at his stats. He never had a 200 hit season despite his amazing lifetime batting average, but that can be attributed to the amount of times that he drew walks. Lifetime On Base Percentage of .482 which is freaking crazy.

The year he hit over .400, he had 147 walks and only struck out 27 times and had an On Base Percentage of .553 That is like a video game number.

You forgot parts of 1952, 1953 seasons to fly missions in Korean war as well.

Guy missed no less than 4 full seasons of 175 hits per, 40 hrs per and 115 rbi per.

Looking at 3600-4000 hits and 675- 700 hrs

Yes, I read a book about him about 10 years ago. He was a better fighter pilot than hitter. A true man's man. Real life John Wayne.

can't compare. hitters like stanton would routinely have 100+ hr season vs the pitchers from back then.

ted williams if he faced pitchers of this era, he might not even be .300 hitter and will miss a lot of swings.

his bat speed won't catch most fast balls in present ara.

but he is still the greatest hitter and a hall of famer because we was the best of his era.

John Wayne is said to have modeled his swagger walk from Ted Williams

I disagree with this in general. The umpires had zones much larger that would put modern hitters into defensive hitting.

Pitchers threw just as hard, but with every game starting at noon or 1pm how would the modern athlete compare? No partying, no luxury hotels, buses and trains- no first class planes. No modern medicine and inside badeball- the spikes high, throwing at guys, no watered down pitching, double headers, etc.... I think it's a wash in terms of what the conditioning of modern athletes could do for stats in that era of baseball.

For example, Gwynn and Brett and Boggs and a handful of others have had .360-.395 seasons since, so pitching isn't overwhelming them today. Everyone hits hrs today so it's not that great and of the all time strikeout pitchers many come from earlier era, Ryan, W Johnson, Blyleven.

It's been over 55 years since Williams put on a pair of cleates and his shortened career still holds up to today's greats, many of whom over condition and burn out, others still suspect of enhancement.

The only era argument that holds water is the color barrier, thou Williams missed much of the pre 47 seasons to war so it's a wash. That said, greatest black pitcher, Gibson, didn't arrive till the 60s anyway.

Also remember reading that when he hit 406 back then that a sacrifice fly counted as a time at bat. He had 12 that year.

No, you would have to figure 12 less at bats for him and come up with a higher average.

This is pretty interesting. Ted Williams won 2 Triple Crowns and won the MVP award 2 times. But he never won the MVP award in any of the years that he won either of the Triple Crowns or the year that he batted .406.

World class fly fisherman to boot.

    Did not suffer fools.

The .406 year, last game, was asked if he wanted to sit out because he was @ .402 or something.
Fukk that. He plays. He hits.

The way the stories goes, on Nite b4, Ted took the collar and dropped to .3996. His manager Cronin (incorrectly) thought u would just round up to .400 and call him a 400-hitter. Ted told him "Of course I'm going to play."

Went 6-for-8 in the Sunday doubleheader to finish up at .406.

Teddy Samuel Williams — he changed it legally to Theodore years later — was born to Samuel Stuart Williams of southern California, who had Welsh and Irish heritage, and Micaela May (Venzor) Williams, who was born in 1891 in El Paso, Texas, to Mexican natives Pablo Venzor and Natalia (Hernandez).

For fcks sake. Who cares what his heritage was. The guy is a legend. Yet we sit here and wonder why identity politics exist. 8 percent of black people vote for one side. 8 fckin percent. Really?

Anyway, back to Ted. Fck the era shit, he is an all time great. Not even a question.
