    phil jackson 'stunned'

    http://m.espn.go.com/wireless/story?storyId=8622878&city=newyork

Phil Jackson was prepared to return to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday morning if negotiations between his agent and the team went well, a league source told ESPNLosAngeles.com late Sunday night.

When the Lakers called to tell Jackson that they had instead chosen Mike D'Antoni to be their next head coach, he was "stunned," according to the source, because he had been under the impression "it was his job to turn down," although no formal offer had ever been made.

How do they not bring him in to run the triangle with the team they got??

There giving the job to D'antoni was an FU to Phil Jackson for a reason. Why open negotiations with Phil and then go another direction?

I lost some respect for Phil Jackson when he asked for travel restrictions. How can he seriously not go to every game, as much as he would have helped, thats too much of a one man show for my liking if he thinks he could actually get that.

He's 67 years old. Either way, it sounds like he was just overplaying his hand. If no formal offer was made, it is just speculation. From the sounds of it, he thought he had first dibs on turning the job down. He was wrong.

That's pretty stunning. 11 rings vs 0 rings and they chose 0? Something must have happened behind the scenes.

His $15M-per-year demands for the part time hours he was rumored to be requesting, plus his requests for veto power over any and all personnel moves was probably a little too much. Which is a pity.

D'antoni coming off knee surgery. If they wanted a coach w/ bad knees they should've went w/ Phil.

pj's demands were too much. the guy wanted to be paid what he deserves but basically work part time. i heard he wanted to chose which away games he would coach and didnt want to come to every practice session. we'll never know the real truth.

Letting him miss some road games in a drawn out reg season isn't the end of the world. I'd rather have Phil come playoff time. I'm sure those road games would be against teams like Pistons, Bobcats, etc anyway

Dam PJ you have a big ass head. You want to be able to miss road games, shootarounds and practice. penetrate your crazy, and then want some ownership stake as well as at least 13 million. With the players the Lakers have a special education kid could coach them and win, sorry brown with your no offensive knowlege

Hard for him to travel considering he blazes soo much medical marijuana in Cally. He should have hired a flunky to transport and hold his stash on the road.

I absolutely agree. Knee jerk reaction was I want Phil back. After sleeping on the hire, Mike D was a better "fit" and he "wanted" to be there. Phil would've brought a sense of calm if he was hired but his demands were too much. Plus hearing that Dr. Jerry Buss made the decision to go with Mike D, and not Jim Buss, makes me feel real confident this was the right decision.

    Which is the truth.

Knicks are 22-6 in the regular season since D'Antoni resigned before the end of last season.

D'Antoni resigned from the Knicks under pressure on March 14 after an 18-24 start last season. Mike Woodson took over and led them to an 18-6 record for the remainder of the regular season before a first-round playoff loss to Miami in five games. The Knicks currently are the NBA's lone unbeaten team under the more defensive-minded Woodson, with a 4-0 mark entering Tuesday's game in Orlando.

That really is ridiculous. $15 million for part time? Who coaches part time anyway? That's pretty ridiculous, I don't care if you're the zen-master. Sounds like he couldn't commit.

I think you guys have it somewhat twisted. Phil never intended on missing any road games from what I understand. He wanted to fly in right before the games and let his Assistant coaches handle practices the day before games.

As good as Phil is, I wasn't really in favour of the Lakers going back to the well again. That being said, I've never liked D'Antoni's coaching style. I think the Lakers should have just rolled with Bickerstaff for the moment, allowing the team to continue to build chemistry. The addition of D'Antoni guarantees further disruption to the team.

according to kurt rambis on espn just now, all the rumors about phil demanding games off and part ownership are 100% false.

the only discussion they had were whether phil was the right coach for the team and they gave him the weekend to think about returning.... but ultimately pulled the rug from right underneath him.

kobe also left practice today without speaking with the media.... he's pissed.

I dont believe what Kurt Rambis says

    He is Phil's boy

Chief triangle definitely wanted to skip some road trips

That we know because he even thought about requesting that in his last go round with the Lakers

And he wasnt coming back to coach for less then 10 million a year

    Rambis is full of shit
