Beyond The Baseline ‏@SI_BTBaseline Mardy Fish has withdrawn from the U.S. Open citing health reasons. Roger Federer gets a walkover into the quarterfinals.

Fish didn't want to get embarrassed. He had no shot.

Funny guy looked fine screwing my Simon bet the other night. I agree with the people that said he just didn't want to get destroyed. Get your 4th round pay and go home.

I doubt it was just because it's Federer, but I'm sure it played a part. Your opponent can help determine whether you're going to go for it if you're not feeling your best.

Against someone else, Fish might be playing. Fish has only beaten Federer once (2008 Indian Wells).

From some of the stuff Justin Gimelstob reported on today it sounds like Fish is really stressing himself out and has been the entire year. The heart issue complicated things and is now another thing for him to worry about. The problem is it sounds like he is using it a little bit as a crutch for not being able to handle the pressure of the ranking he achieved from last year. Been saying it most of the year. Fish peaked last year and was bound to crack this year. He has pretty much struggled from Day 1 of 2012. Sounds like it's about 50-50 mental and physical now.

Gimelstob, maybe harsh but maybe not as he gets to the bare bones of the situation:

He’s struggling with the stress of trying to reach his potential. This tournament means so much to him. It all just compounded in his withdrawal today.

“Is the physical presupposing the mental or is the mental presupposing the physical? It is symbolic that he’s playing one of the biggest matches of his career against the greatest of all time, where expectations should be at an all-time low and he couldn’t even take the court. So he’s depressed, he’s disappointed, he’s sad, and he’s stressed.

“Pressure is a privilege, and Mardy Fish needs to embrace that.”
Has a great point about how low the pressure is in this situation. No one expected Fish to do much against Roger, so he really should have been approaching it loose and free. I do think perhaps the physical nature was more to blame though as he did look worn against Simon.

This is why I appreciate Andy Roddick's career. He wasn't afraid to get his ass kicked by Roger or anyone else. Still remember his presser after Roger rolled him in Australian in 2007 I think it was - some of the funniest stuff ever.
