NFL Onside Kick replace with 4th & 15

One of the rule changes would change an onside kick to a 4th and 15. According to reports, New York Giants owner John Mara said he was the only member of the committee opposed to the proposal. The new rule would give teams the option to not kick off after scoring in the fourth quarter.

If this change is made, it's not even football anymore.

I’d imagine 4th 20 success rate is same as onside.

The rule changes to kickoffs already ruined the onside. This is better than that. But if given all options just move to the old kickoff rules for onsides

I don't think so. The success rate for expected onside kicks is like 7%. Maybe worse. 4th and 20 has to be a better chance. Def penalty included. When teams are down, onside kick usually feels futile. But if it's just one play 4th and 20, some offenses can convert those well. It would make big comebacks seem much more likely.

But also, where does the team get the ball if it's successful or unsuccessful?

Just gives a chance for the underdog to cover more and more. I could see a phantom PI called to extend the game. This is what vegas wants.

That too, yes. It definitely could mean more chance of closer games and backdoors.

Would teams still be allowed to do sneak onside kicks in the first 3 quarters?

Yeah, really, the opportunity for bad refereeing to impact more plays is not particularly appealing.

What happens if there is an interception or fumble? Can the defense score points?

So this just eliminates the occasional surprise onside kick? What if a team "unintentionally" kicks an onside kick? Is it a do over?

I don't think it would. I think you could still do an onsides anytime, surprise or not. You just also have the option to go for 4th and 15 (in the 4th quarter).

instead of having refs look at replays on a coach's 2nd challenge now.

The Head cheerleaders will face off in a back flip hopscotch challenge

winning team's cheerleader gets the call

Pretty much becoming like the XFL if that gets passed. All it takes is a bad penalty call and they keep possession.

you guys are so ancient, let the game get better, onside kick is fricken stupid, shit changes they wear helmets now, and now you cant touch the QB and everything is reviewed (half the game is a bud light commercial cause they are reviewing. I still love football and will watch it for a long time coming. Rules change, its OK with me! I hope they do something cause onside kicks are currently stupid. I also thought the AAF overtime crap last night was BS, 1st and goal one shot each side, that is dumb. I wish the NFL did something close to thecollege rule of get the ball at the 20 and each team gets two possessions and whatever they score in those 2 possessions is the final score. there is no doubt of who should have won with 2 possessions at the 20 added to each team. you can argue that some teams are better from the 20 and others are better at defense if given more field to defend, yeah sure whatever but it would be fun.

the current onside rule is horrible, teams that are down by 2 scores with 2 minutes left and no timeouts, they know they are fukked but if they thought they could get a 4 and 18 or something crazy if they score quick, now that would change the game for real and make those crappy last 2 or 3 minutes of big leads interesting ESPECIALLY for bettors!

Just change the rule from the ball having to go 10 yards before the kicking team can touch it to 5yds

15 yards is nothing to most teams
it's like gifting an additional possession
and it violates the very spirit of gridiron football.

Would illegal contact on this 4th and 15 give the offense (kicking) team an automatic first down?

    who cares?

4 downs and out. kick the ball and if you want, try and recover possession on the kickoff.

I can't believe this garbage. It's not their damn ball. This is a 5th down !
