NFL players union files grievance challenging national anthem policy

The National Football League Players Association filed a grievance Tuesday challenging the NFL’s newly imposed national anthem policy, the union said.

The complaint is “on behalf of all players challenging the NFL’s recently imposed anthem policy,” NFLPA said in a statement. “The union’s claim is that this new policy, imposed by the NFL’s governing body without consultation with the NFLPA, is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.”

The policy, approved by team owners in May, requires athletes on the field to stand during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.“ Should a player or other team member refuse, or otherwise disrespect the song, the offending party will be subject to a fine.

The policy was put in place as a compromise move after President Donald Trump frequently railed against players for kneeling during the anthem in protest of racial and other injustice in America, particularly police brutality.

“Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable, Trump tweeted in September. “Bad ratings!”

In announcing the new policy, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league wanted people to be "respectful" of the national anthem."We want people to stand — that's all personnel — and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That's something we think we owe," he said.

Though the policy gives players the option to remain in the locker room, it nevertheless “infringes on player rights,” NFLPA said in its statement.

The union plans to begin negotiations with the league over how to remedy the situation.

“In advance of our filing today, we proposed to the NFL to begin confidential discussions with the NFLPA Executive Committee to find a solution to this issue instead of immediately proceeding with litigation," NFLPA said in its statement. "The NFL has agreed to proceed with those discussions and we look forward to starting them soon.”

Take a union vote. If the majority think it is ok to kneel, then stay in the locker rooms. If the majority feel it is best to stand, stand or stay in the locker rooms. Problem solved. Or take the nniggerr approach and be difficult. These trouble making monkeys no longer control the outcome of everything socially. They feel the backlash from whitey and they don't like it. Whitey be rising again. BOY

The players just don't get it...

Their leadership is so weak and misguided...

The backlash, if this drags out, will be huge. Those ceremonies are paid for by sponsors, those stadiums are paid for by the population and their salaries are paid for by the ticket sales and TV viewers.

They risk alienating the hands that feed them, to prove what? Noone can answer that their motive is objective and concrete.

Its resistance at best, with dire consequences.

The players just can't seem to understand the fact that they are that teams employee, and when you are an employee you have no voice other than that of your employer when your at work.

Good. Under the constitution the NFL player's should be able to protest and be free of any consequences. Let this sink in: We have a President meddling in sports by trying to forcibly tell NFL player's to stand for the national anthem. This is what dictators do, plain n simple. I could give rat's behind if you sit, stand, kneel when the national anthem is sung. You try and dictate my life when I have the freedom to choose, then I'm gonna get loud and throw a fit. The America I knew was "the land of the free", ever since that orange buffoon got into office it's been totalitarianism. Hate living in this country under all this turmoil.

Who gives a shit about a stupid song?

Leave it to old white people to get their tights whiteys in a bunch over nothing. 99% of the people crying about the "disrespect to the flag and military" don't even know all of the words to the song. Their lord and head klansman Trump certainly doesn't.

NFLPA are idiots. Every other league and every other business doesn't allow employees to protest at work. What morons.

    Under the Constitution?

Under your reasoning then the cashier at McDonald's should be able to take a knee, in the middle of his shift, instead of taking my order.

The fireman should be able to take a knee instead of rescuing the burning family.

The cab driver should be able to take a knee and keep the meter running.

Seriously, the Constitution? Doesn't apply when you sign an employment contract- implied or written. Your rights cannot impede upon others rights, and in such an agreement you voluntarily waive some of those rights.

The players cannot take a knee if the teams say no. The individual can take a knee on their own time, away from their place of employment.

The Constitution.... GTFO, its employment law and its pointless enterprise and entertainment at that...players have no leg to stand on.

A strike! You think that the players will strike?

They'd be replaced in 30 seconds if 6 white QBs crossed the line lol

Only about 12 players in the whole league that actually matter to the NFL from a prestige POV....

Unions strike, with notice btw, for health care, wage issues and working conditions. Because things are so good in US post war the need for unions has diminished.

Outside of public unions, which may be technically illegal (and were thru the 60s) there has been no need for this mindset, and frankly other than political reasons I don't know that we need them either.

First off, the players could jerk off during the anthem and I couldn't care less
That being said, any "free speech" rights any of us have at work are not the same as in our free time

I barely watch the NFL mainly because the quality of play is hideous, the money is ridiculous and the players think I give 2 fukks about what they think about anything when I don't

Owners come out and say they are open to guaranteed contracts for the next cba. Then we'll see if the players still feel their protest is worthy. 90% probably are protesting different things and are only doing it because it's a trendy thing. We would definitely see who truly is about their "cause" .

I can honestly say I don't give a fuk anymore.

I used to watch football as much as I could on Sundays. Multiple fantasy leagues, betting on all kinds of games.

Last year I didn't watch more than 5 minutes at a time. I see no reason why I will watch much this year either.

Mine feel it is disrespectful. Probably because they have been raised that way. To have respect for the flag of their country, to have a love of country, and to show respect for others.

The NFLPA is wrong. It is not able President Trump. All he did was voice what millions of people were thinking and saying. Only the players didn't care that they were alienating the people who had previously supported them. The owners wised up to the tanking ratings, the lower ticket and merchandise sells, and the complaints from their advertisers who were getting complaints from people who have purchase power.

Every NFL player could have held kneel downs all summer long. Media would have covered them. They could have invited people to come kneel with them for an hour or so. That would have reached some. Kneeling during the anthem is only to turn your average fan/viewer/supporter off. They don't have this issue in college football because the players are in the tunnels.

They can strike if they choose but that would just make them lose money. Union employees have the right to negotiate things in their contract when it comes to pay retirement ect..I’m a union construction worker, every union is difrent if my employer tells me to wear safety equipment as a condition of employment I have to. Simple solution teams require the players abide or bye Felicia and they can’t do shit. This is so dumb why don’t they all just take a knee before kickoff? Together? On the field? Then it’s all over they get their message and it’s done. They need to stay away from the anthem just dumb on their part.

NFLPA worried about if their players can kneel going into the season yet we have a murder at a players house, another attempted murderer, and a guy who set up a robbery and assault against his girlfriend.

Great job guys, everything looks fukin great going into another season. I am sure all the season ticket holders and people that buy the NFL package love it. Good thing this clueless bunch of clowns has their heads up their ass on another NFL season. They should kill it this year.

I think this is exactly why they are protesting. The police seem to be disproportionately targeting black players in their arrests. They've arrested way more black players. It's not fair.

Maybe even after they fock your kid in the azz you might still sock their kock. The same nniggerrs that are killing and beating women every other day are the ones trying to make a point about police brutality. You have to beat some animals if you expect them to listen or comply. I have seen several nniggerrs getn arrested and they are as non-compliant as possible. I have several friends that have been on the Akron police force, they tell me stories about these fockn nniggerrs that would blow your mind. They are always suing, filling abuse claims, etc. Thay know the squeeky wheel gets the grease. NOW that we have started to stop their nniggerr moves they are reverting back to the power NNIGGERR MOVE. We as a society must crush these animal focks for good! DOWN with NNIGGERRs!!
