Texans Finally Cut Ties With Brian Cushing

Reportedly, linebacker Brian Cushing’s time as a member of the Houston Texans will be coming to an end before the start of the new league year on March 14. According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the team has informed Cushing of its decision to release the player they selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Cushing, who played collegiately at USC, missed 10 games in 2017 due to a suspension for his violation of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. The suspension was the second of Cushing’s career, with the linebacker serving a four-game ban in 2010 after his first violation of the league policy on PEDs.

Cushing played just five games for the Texans last season, tallying 16 combined tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks. Making 13 starts for Houston the season prior, Cushing finished 2016 with 65 combined tackles. His lone Pro Bowl appearance came in 2009, with Cushing racking up 133 combined tackles, four sacks and four interceptions on his way to winning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

The 2009 season was also one of three in which Brian Cushing played in all 16 regular season games, with the 2015 campaign being the most recent.

According to McClain’s report, releasing Cushing will save the Texans $7.64 million in cap room. With the nine-year pro out of the lineup for most of the season, rookies Zach Cunningham and Dylan Cole were able to earn more reps.

Cunningham, Houston’s second round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, started 13 of the team’s 16 games and tallied 82 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks. As for Cole, the undrafted free agent appeared in 12 games and finished the season with 25 combined tackles, one sack and two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

Cushing was smart as hell. He juiced up right before the season, so that he would make the roster which gave him $16 Million guaranteed. He didn't care about getting popped as he only lost about $600k but got his money. He'll most likely retire. The Texans were totally stupid in this one but I'm never mad at a player for getting paid.
