NFL Player News - Week of 7/24/17

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

LAC - Mike Williams denies surgery talk

    Source: NFL.com - Lakisha Jackson

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) denied reports that he could need season-ending back surgery. 'I'm good,' Williams said Saturday, July 22. 'Everything good. The back situation. That was some false information being released. I don't know who released it but everything is good.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We will believe Williams is healthy when we see it. Even if he is cleared and plays in the preseason, disc herniation is a potentially recurring issue that can pop up again during the season. Williams will need a great preseason to jump Travis Benjamin or Tyrell Williams on the depth chart.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson a slot receiver now?

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson is the leading candidate to replace Andrew Hawkins as the team's top slot receiver and has a good chance to land the job, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Isaiah Crowell has taken control of the Browns running game, but Johnson can still be a factor in PPR leagues if he is a "slash" player getting wide receiver targets. Johnson is worth a later pick in PPR leagues because his talent hasn't been completely tapped yet and the Browns have no entrenched #1 wideout. He appears to be part of a larger trend of receiving backs not being limited to lining up in the backfield.

MIN - QB Sam Bradford in better situation

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Sid Hartman

Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Bradford said he is in a better situation this season than he was last season because he had an entire offseason to practice with the team and has a better understanding of the offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford was a very late addition to the team and did well considering that and the state of the offensive line. He has developed chemistry with Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, and Kyle Rudolph, and the backfield should be improved this year. Things are looking up for Bradford and the Vikings offense, although he is still only a streamer level play at the stocked quarterback position.

ARI - QB Carson Palmer to see more time in preseason

    Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer will receive more playing snaps this preseason than he did in 2016, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Palmer apparently suffered a "dead arm" last year, so this could help get him warmed up before the season. It doesn't appear to be strictly about Palmer, as Arians said all of the starters will get more work than last year. Carson will reportedly miss the Hall of Fame Game, but that's not a worry.

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins expected to report on time

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins has not made a lot of progress in contract extension talks with the Texans but is expected to report to training camp on time. Both sides are motivated to reach an agreement on a long-term deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopkins was hyperproductive in the pass happy Texans offense with Brian Hoyer at the helm, but Brock Osweiler was so bad that Hopkins faded into the pack both statistically and in his impact on games. This is probably a good time for the Texans to get a discount on his extension.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews still not healthy

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (neck) has yet to be medically cleared from offseason neck surgery, and his surgeon doesn't want to revisit the matter until sometime in August, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Eagles can't release Mathews until after he is cleared or they will have to pay an injury settlement. This will leave Mathews in a bad spot when it comes time to look for another job. His durability has been the main issue holding him back during his career.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins healthy for camp?

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is expected to be close to 100 percent healthy when training camp begins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Close to 100% is encouraging, but not exactly what we wanted to hear after last year's debacle around his foot surgery recovery. There were no obvious signs that Watkins' recovery was less than ideal last year before Week 1. Chances are the Bills will be taking it slow with Watkins in camp and the preseason, denying us a chance to see him really open it up and exorcise the memories of 2016. He's still got first-round pick upside if he has his first season of good health from beginning to end, but like the Bills, it is difficult to have confidence that will happen. We will be watching Watkins closely.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews may be limited

    Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com - Dave Spadaro

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) may receive limited snaps during training camp since he missed some offseason workouts because of knee tendinitis, according to head coach Doug Pederson.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews was already due to take a step back in the offense with Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith signed to give them two legitimate outside receivers for the first time in years. This issue with his knee is another sign that Matthews won't be the focal point of the passing game as he was in the past.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz will not be limited

    Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com - Dave Spadaro

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said the team will not limit the number of throws QB Carson Wentz will make during training camp but the team will monitor the throws.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz started strong last year and faded in the second half of the year. There's no reason to limit work for the youngster with the team only practicing once a day.

SF - WR Marquise Goodwin poised for breakout?

    Source: NFL.com - Jeremy Bergman

San Francisco 49ers WR Marquise Goodwin is more than just a deep threat, according to WR Jeremy Kerley. 'Working with him for the last two or three months, he's an all-around receiver and he knows what he's doing,' Kerley said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kyle Shanahan had great success last year utilizing Taylor Gabriel as a speed/quickness option in the Falcons offense, and many speculate that he will try to use Goodwin in the same way. Goodwin has had trouble staying healthy, but he is among the fastest receivers in the league. The 49ers should give him the biggest opportunity he has had in his career.

CHI - Ka'Deem Carey on the bubble?

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears RB Ka'Deem Carey was left off ESPN.com Jeff Dickerson's 53-man roster projection.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Carey appears to be a wasted fourth-round pick for the Bears. Three years in they have given him ample opportunity to make an impact, but he is unremarkable by NFL standards. Chalk this one up to Carey's lack of plus measureables and an inability to transcend very limited tools.

ARI - WR John Brown packing on muscle

    Source: ESPN.com - Josh Weinfuss

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown checked into the team's first practice of the season at 185 pounds, up 12 pounds from last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That should be a good thing for his durability and shows that he had an offseason dedicated to conditioning. Brown played through a cyst in his back and sickle-cell related issues last year. If he can avoid the injury report this year, Brown can be a strong #2 in the Cardinals passing game and outperform his ADP.

WAS - Rob Kelley to hold to starting job 'for now'

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Rob Kelley will likely begin the season as the starter 'for now' if he shows he has improved over last season, according to ESPN.com's John Keim.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Samaje Perine was the team's fourth round pick and he is similar to Kelley but more talented physically. Kelley has slimmed down and seems to be taking the competition seriously. Right now Kelley is going well after Perine in drafts, and he is a good later pick for teams that neglect running back early in drafts and want to get some cheap starts early in the season.

CAR - WR Devin Funchess expected to start

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess, who was out-snapped 690-493 by Ted Ginn after being named the offensive MVP of last year's training camp, is projected to start, according to ESPN.com's David Newton.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Funchess's developmentt stalled out last year after a very promising offseason. Rookie Curtis Samuel should replace Ginn as the deep threat, but he is too raw as a receiver to get significant snaps. Free agents Charles Johnson and Russell Shepard are the top candidates to get more snaps if Funchess doesn't impress this summer.

NFL - QB Robert Griffin III attracting mild interest

    Source: BleacherReport.com - Mike Freeman

Free-agent QB Robert Griffin III (Browns) has started to attract 'mild interest' from NFL clubs, four months following his March release from Cleveland.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
As teams start to see their backup quarterback situations up close in camp, that mild interest could heat up. Griffin is definitely good enough to be a #2 for some teams, but his durability has been far from reliable. There's a chance he won't be signed until midseason, but Griffin can still help a team.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald out of HOF game

    Source: AZCardinals.com

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald will be held out of the Hall-of-Fame game against the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, Aug. 3, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is business as usual for the extra preseason game. It's not great for folks who make the trip to the game, but teams aren't going to expose key veterans this early in the calendar.

    Tuesday Update

IND - QB Andrew Luck begins throwing

    Source: Colts.com - Kevin Bowen

Updating an earlier report, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) has begun the throwing part of his rehab, according to general manager Chris Ballard.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Luck (shoulder) will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to general manager Chris Ballard. The team expects Luck to come off before the beginning of the season. But we're getting more worried about this situation.

LAC - WR Keenan Allen looked explosive

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen (knee) looked quick and explosive in offseason work. He's due for a monster season, according to beat writer Eric D. Williams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Another positive report about Allen's outlook in 2017. We're excited to see him back in action and hopeful that he can stay healthy for a full 16-game season. Allen is going off the board at WR15 (3.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

GB - More carries coming for RB Ty Montgomery?

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers RB Ty Montgomery should double his 77 rushing attempts from a year ago, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not a shocking or outlandish proclamation. Montgomery only got more than 10 carries in a game once last year as he transitioned from wide receiver to running back. The Packers are still going to lean on the passing game, but Montgomery should get around 160 carries on the season. It will be interesting to see how rookies like Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones fit into what should be a RBBC. In PPR leagues, Montgomery has more value because of his pass-catching ability. He's currently getting drafted at RB17 (4.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - WR Cole Beasley ready for camp

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys WR Cole Beasley (hamstring) is prepared to receive a full workload in training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Beasley has been hampered by a hamstring injury that sidelined him during offseason activities.

KC - TE Travis Kelce healthy enough for camp

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (shoulder) is ready for the start of training camp this week despite recovering from a shoulder injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He'll be ready for the start of camp, but we think the Chiefs can ease him into action. Kelce is a top fantasy tight end once again this year, and we want to see what kind of rapport he builds with rookie QB Patrick Mahomes. He's already got great chemistry with veteran QB Alex Smith and that will continue in 2017.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill moved well with brace

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) moved well in organized team activities despite a brace on his left knee, which he'll have to wear this season. However, they were non-contact drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tannehill is just getting used to the brace. It's good that he moved well in the offseason workouts, but we'll see how he responds when contact is introduced in the preseason.

CIN - RB Giovani Bernard likely cleared for camp

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (knee) is likely to be cleared for the beginning of training camp. Bernard is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bernard will be back in action, but his role is much different (and smaller) from years past. Joe Mixon should be the lead back for the Bengals in 2017. The rookie has superstar potential, and his presence will push guys like Bernard and Jeremy Hill into backup roles.

MIN - RB Latavius Murray shows up early

    Source: The Associated Press

Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray (ankle) was one of the veterans to show up with the rookies for an early start to training camp Sunday, July 23. 'It'll be helpful for me just being here,' Murray said. 'I'm happy to be able to dive back into the playbook, and again, I want to learn it as much as I can, inside and out, so when I'm back on the field I'm able to play fast.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murray is going to compete with rookie Dalvin Cook when healthy. We think Cook wins the job to begin the year and so long as he doesn't fumble the job away (fumbling problems plagued him at Florida State), Murray should be relegated to a backup role.

NYG - WR Odell Beckham Jr. in class by himself

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. is the only player in NFL history with at least 90 catches, 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his first three seasons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sounds about right. Beckham is a superstar and fantasy owners are excited to take him as one of the first WRs off the board in the first round of fantasy drafts. His numbers have been amazing for three years, and it will be interesting to see how his targets are distributed this year with the addition of WR Brandon Marshall and rookie TE Evan Engram to the Giants passing game.

GB - Aaron Jones the third-down back?

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones could emerge as the third-down back this year, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The fifth-round pick out of UTEP has a great two-step and can create space as a runner with shiftiness and agility. He's compact and has an intent stride when setting up defenders in the open field. Jones is not likely to push the pile inside, but get him touches in space and he can be a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald wants a title

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald said Sunday, July 23, that the only reason he is still playing is to 'chase a championship.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This may be that last 'hurrah' for Fitzgerald and QB Carson Palmer. The Cardinals are still in a Super Bowl window, but it seems to be closing fast. In addition to those two stars perhaps playing in their final season, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians has been battling health issues as well.

NO - WR Willie Snead signs tender

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates
New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent WR Willie Snead signed his $615,000 tender Monday, July 24, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As an ERFA Snead had two choices; either sign the tender or stop playing football. Now that he's signed, Snead is hoping the Saints will get him a new long-term deal. He's put together two WR3 seasons for fantasy owners and could be in for an uptick in statistical production with Brandin Cooks traded away to the Patriots.

DEN - QB John Elway agrees to new deal

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway agreed to a new five-year contract Monday, July 24, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The contract is expected to make Elway the highest paid GM in the league. Entering his seventh season as the Broncos' lead football executive, Elway has overseen a team that has totaled the second-most overall wins (73) in the NFL since 2011 while capturing five AFC West Division titles and appearing in two Super Bowls. Additionally, Elway has helped the Broncos join the Patriots as the only NFL teams with at least nine wins (regular season and playoffs) in each of the last six years.

NO - TE Josh Hill passes physical

Source: The Times-Picayune - Herbie Teope

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill (fibula) passed his well and performed well on his conditioning test. He should be good to go for training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill is an athletic move tight end for the Saints. He's not going to do much for them if Coby Fleener stays healthy and produces at the expected level.

CHI - Mitchell Trubisky lands $29 million

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky's four-year deal guarantees him $29 million.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's guaranteed quite a bit of money, but there's no guarantee about how much he'll play this season. Trubisky is clearly their quarterback of the future, but he's going to begin the year behind free agent addition Mike Glennon. If (when?) Glennon struggles, the team could turn to Trubisky at some point later in the year.

MIA - MIA still wants to re-up with WR Jarvis Landry

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry still hasn't received a contract extension offer from the team, but the Dolphins are still interested in getting a deal done.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Landry was a second-round pick in 2014, so there was no fifth-year option to pick up this offseason. He's set to hit the open market next year, but it may not come to that. If the Dolphins can't work something out with him before free agency starts, Landry could get franchise tagged by the team.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert expected for camp

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (back) is expected to be ready for training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners believe that Eifert can come back healthy in 2017. He's going off the board at TE6 (7.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. Eifert is a touchdown hog, and projecting him for 8-10 touchdowns in 2017 is not outlandish.

GB - Limited role for WR Jeff Janis?

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky
Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis should make the 53-man roster this season but will likely be limited to a role on special teams, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That sounds about right. Janis only has 15 catches during his three-year pro career and his role won't grow unless there are injuries in front of him on the depth chart.

    Wednesday Update

BAL - RB Kenneth Dixon out for season

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Baltimore Ravens RB Kenneth Dixon (knee) will be sidelined for the regular season after undergoing surgery on his medial collateral ligament Tuesday, July 25. The recovery time is expected to be four to five months.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was originally thought to be a meniscus injury that was minor and would only require 6-8 weeks to recover. Now the Ravens are locked into Terrance West as the starter with Danny Woodhead as a primary backup/receiving back. Perhaps guys like Rashad Jennings or DeAngelo Williams could be added off the free agent wire. The Ravens should also be looking to see if any backs become available through camp cuts in August.

IND - QB Andrew Luck placed on PUP

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, July 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Luck can come off the list at any time during the preseason. We may not see him play in the preseason but the team expresses confidence that he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. Luck is a top-5 fantasy quarterback when healthy, but watch this situation closely as camp rolls along.

JAX - New deal coming for WR Allen Robinson?

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Robinson's agent has been talking to the Jaguars about a possible new deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As a second-round pick in 2014, there was no fifth-year option to pick up for Robinson and he's set to be a free agent next year. He's coming off a down season in 2016 and the Jaguars are set to have fewer passing attempts in 2017. Robinson may bet on himself to see if he can bounce back this year and hit a big payday.

DAL - Dallas won't re-sign WR Lucky Whitehead

Source: The Dallas Morning News - David Moore

Free-agent WR Lucky Whitehead (Cowboys) will not be re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys despite having his shoplifting charge dropped due to mistaken identity, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Head coach Jason Garrett said the team made a decision they thought would be best for the Cowboys. They discussed the situation with Whitehead where he likely expressed his innocence but the team cut him anyway.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin at a good weight

Source: The Associated Press - Steve Reed

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is where he needs to be regarding his weight, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin's weight has been an issue (again) this offseason. Weight problems have plagued him since his days in college at Florida State. The team did pick up his fifth-year option earlier this year, and Benjamin needs to show that he can stay healthy, stay in shape and produce at the expected level. For fantasy owners, Benjamin should be considered a low-end WR2. The Panthers have added receiving weapons like RB Christian McCaffrey and WR Curtis Samuel to add more explosiveness to the passing game.

Free-agent RB Bobby Rainey (Giants) is likely to sign with the Baltimore Ravens, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the injury to Kenneth Dixon (knee), the Ravens need depth at the position. If added, Rainey is no lock for the 53-man roster.

WAS - WR Ryan Grant still receiving kudos

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Ryan Grant has yet to lose the confidence of his coaching staff despite making only 39 catches in three seasons in large part because he is the best route-runner on the team this year or last year, including Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the addition of Terrelle Pryor and a healthy Josh Doctson, Grant is fourth in the pecking order at wide receiver (at best). He'll need another strong preseason to keep his job.

DEN - Gary Kubiak returns in advisory role

    Source: DenverBroncos.com

Clarifying a previous report, former Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak was named senior personnel advisor Tuesday, July 25. The role will allow Kubiak to evaluate players on the college side and in free agency, according to general manager John Elway.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Elway and Kubiak are long-time friends but Kubiak is not a 'yes' man in his new role. He has an eye for talent and will work to help the Broncos in the draft and free agency.

CAR - TE Greg Olsen to play out his deal

Source: NFL Network - Tiffany Blackmon

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen said he plans to play out his contract.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That's interesting as the Panthers seemed to fire GM Dave Gettleman because he was unlikely to do a new deal with Olsen (and veteran linebacker Thomas Davis). Olsen said he didn't want to add to the distractions for the team after Gettleman was fired.

    Thursday Update

BAL - QB Joe Flacco Out With Back Issue

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported on his Twitter feed: "Ravens QB Joe Flacco is preparing to miss 3-6 wks with a disc issue in his back. Out at least a week or 2, sources tell me & @TomPelissero." ESPN's Adam Schefter had a much more optimistic report on his Twitter feed: "Joe Flacco injured his back lifting. Took an MRI. Team believes a week of rest will calm injury and not expected to miss significant time."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stay tuned for more clarity on how long Flacco will miss. We don't like this for Flacco and newly acquired WR Jeremy Maclin. As well as Breshad Perriman who we've been excited about. Stay tuned for more details there but clearly this is concerning.

WAS - TE Jordan Reed has toe injury

Source: The Associated Press - Stephen Whyno

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toe) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of significant toe soreness, according to a team spokesperson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fantasy owners know that Reed is a top-3 fantasy tight end if healthy...but it's the staying healthy part that is a problem for the veteran. He will be evaluated further before he is cleared to practice because the team wants to avoid any possible long-term injury.

DEN - RB Jamaal Charles cleared for full participation

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala
Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles will be eased in slowly, but he has been cleared to participate fully in training camp, according to the Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles is salty since the Chiefs released him. He's basically missed the last two years due to knee problems. If healthy, Charles is going to push C.J. Anderson for playing time. Anderson himself has to stay healthy and keep second-year pro Devontae Booker at bay in addition to Charles.

CHI - GM says QB Mike Glennon is starter

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears QB Mike Glennon is the team's starting quarterback, according to general manager Ryan Pace.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They made the move to add Glennon in free agency so he's the starter....for now. The Bears moved up in the first round for Mitchell Trubisky and he's clearly the quarterback of the future. Trubisky should take over for Glennon later this year but will need to prove that he's ready for prime time.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian to open with starters

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian will receive the first snaps with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, July 27, but head coach Vance Joseph said that Siemian and QB Paxton Lynch will share snaps with the starters during the early part of training camp. Joseph said he would like to decide on a starting quarterback before the third preseason game but that is not a deadline for the decision.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's to be expected as Siemian was the starter for 14 games last year. He'll compete with 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch for the starting job in 2017. So long as Lynch doesn't fall flat, we expect him to win the top spot in training camp.

ATL - WR Julio Jones will be limited

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Kelsey Conway

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) will be limited at the beginning of training camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has been limited with this foot injury before and this isn't thought to be serious but with someone as highly rated as Jones, we'll certainly be keeping an eye on this one.

PHI - Growing concern over WR Jordan Matthews?

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) has growing concerns in the locker room that his knee issue is more than tendonitis. However, there is talk elsewhere in the building that he could have practiced more in the spring, and the issue is his contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's in the final year of his rookie deal, and the team hasn't approached him about an extension. Head coach Doug Pederson hinted that Matthews would be limited when full-squad workouts begin Thursday, July 27.

    Source: Chargers Twitter

The Chargers acquired QB Cardale Jones from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

DEN - TE Jeff Heuerman due for breakout season?

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman is entering his third season with the Broncos, although he sat out 2015 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. General manager John Elway believes 2017 is the year Heuerman needs to break out. 'This would be the year,' Elway said, 'We're waiting for Jeff to make the big step.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The team is patient with their draft picks, but Heuerman is running out of time. Injuries and inconsistencies have kept Heuerman from playing up to his potential. We're expecting A.J. Derby to be the lead tight end in a Mike McCoy (TE friendly) offense.

NYJ - WR Lucky Whitehead claimed by Jets

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent WR Lucky Whitehead (Cowboys) was claimed by the New York Jets Wednesday, July 26, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Whitehead was released by the Cowboys after he was falsely accused of a crime. He's found a new team where he'll have a chance to win a spot on the 53-man roster. In addition to contributing as a wideout, Whitehead could work as a return man too.

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant and TE Jason Witten will not participate in practice Wednesday, July 26. Head coach Jason Garrett said he wants the veteran players to have a regular schedule during training camp that will not wear them out.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a big deal. Veterans like Witten and Bryant are going to get some time off.

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick could see his role expand even more inside the red zone this year, according to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions are going to find more looks for guys like Riddick in the red zone with Anquan Boldin no longer with the team. Some looks/targets will be for Riddick and some should go towards TE Eric Ebron...and maybe even a few for rookie TE Mike Roberts.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor enjoyed 'great spring'

Source: 97.5 The Fanatic - Geoff Mosher

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor had a 'great spring in slot and outside,' according to offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In two years, Agholor has less than 60 catches and three touchdowns in his pro career. That's not good enough for a first-round pick, and 2017 seems like a make-or-break season for Agholor. We're not expecting him to do much for the Eagles with free agent additions Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith.

CLE - QB Cody Kessler will take first snap at camp

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler will compete with rookie DeShone Kizer, Brock Osweiler and Kevin Hogan for the starting job in camp. While head coach Hue Jackson did not give a timetable to name a starter, he acknowledged Kessler 'deserves the chance to walk out there first.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

DeShone Kizer may be the future of the team at the quarterback position but they won't just hand him the job. Kessler is an average starting option but he's going to be accurate on underneath/short routes. Kizer has the big arm and athleticism but he needs to make quicker and better decisions as a passer if he wants to have success as a starter.

ATL - WR Taylor Gabriel has leg strain

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Kelsey Conway

Updating an earlier report, Atlanta Falcons WR Taylor Gabriel (leg) will be limited at the start of training camp with a strain in his lower leg.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gabriel will once again be the third target for the Falcons behind Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu. The team has a plan in place to ease Gabriel back.

PIT - WR Sammie Coates to miss start of camp

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (knee) underwent a knee scope last week and will miss the start of training camp, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coates is already behind the rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster on the depth chart and this injury only cements that. We'll see if Coates can fight his way back up to that third or fourth spot once healthy.

CIN - John Ross unlikely to be ready for camp

    Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Cincinnati Bengals WR John Ross (shoulder) is expected to miss a few weeks of practice because of his surgically repaired shoulder.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This goes against some of the other reports that said Ross might be ready for camp. The Bengals will take it easy with their first-round pick. Ross has crazy speed and will fly down the field in the blink of an eye. If QB Andy Dalton has time to throw, Ross will make for a great deep target.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yeldon's fantasy value is low...even in dynasty leagues...because of the addition of first-round RB Leonard Fournette. He'll compete with Chris Ivory to be the backup behind Fournette in 2017.

    Friday Update

DEN - RB Devontae Booker to have surgery Friday

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker (wrist) will have surgery to fix his fractured wrist Friday, July 28. His recovery time is expected to be six weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Expect CJ Anderson's ADP to rise from 23rd back and 59 overall, though how much Jamaal Charles may impact it is still a question mark. That said, Anderson is likely to be the lead back and carry a full load until Booker gets back, at the very least.

WAS - Twisted ankle for TE Jordan Reed?

Source: The Washington Times - Nora Princiotti

Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed (toe, ankle) may have twisted his ankle overcompensating for his toe ailment, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ankle and toe problems are not a great way to start out training camp. The team insists that Reed will only miss a week of camp. That's cool and all, but we'd rather see them be super cautious with their star tight end. Reed is a top-3 fantasy tight end in any format if healthy.

DAL - RB Ronnie Hillman joins Dallas

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Chargers) will sign with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, July 27, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This definitely points to concerns within the Dallas organization that Ezekiel Elliott will miss some game time. Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris are likely your starters in his stead, though, and Hillman has been an epic disappointment since leaving Denver. We wouldn't pull the trigger on him unless the previously mentioned backs get hurt.

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Updating previous reports, the Baltimore Ravens are 'committing to a week of rest' for QB Joe Flacco (back) in hopes that will calm the symptoms down. He'll be shut down during that time and then be re-evaluated.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some reports are expressing confidence about Flacco's status while earlier reports speculated he could need 3-6 weeks to recover. We'll see about his health status after this mandated week of rest.

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is on schedule in terms of his rehab from his foot injury but will be limited during the early part of training camp, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins is in the final year of his contract and he could be in for a huge payday if he (finally) plays up to his potential. Expect him to be ready to go for the start of the regular season.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell not reporting to camp

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell will not report to training camp as he has not signed his franchise tender.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This has been expected, so we're not surprised. Bell could report to the team in mid-August and not miss a beat. He should be set for the start of the regular season, and Bell is a top-3 fantasy pick in any format.

PIT - WR Martavis Bryant not yet reinstated

    Source: Steelers.com

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is still in the process of being fully reinstated into the NFL. He is in the first stages of that process but is not officially reinstated, according to general manager Kevin Colbert. Until then, Bryant is not permitted to practice with the team or play in any games. He is allowed to participate in off-field team activities, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are holding their breath here but we feel Bryant should be back and reinstated by Week 1. The NFL has to get him through the final steps on reinstatement, so everyone is going to have to be patient here. Perhaps something will be finalized by the middle of the month of August.

SF - RB Carlos Hyde in good shape

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde reported to training camp at 228 pounds. He said he's in the best shape of his career and that he's the lightest he's been since high school.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's what Hyde needed to do as the writing is on the wall as he enters the final year of his contract. New general manager John Lynch has taken notice, too, saying Hyde looks tremendous and that he has dedicated himself to football.

PIT - WR Sammie Coates out for two weeks

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (knee) is expected to miss two weeks of practice after recently undergoing a knee scope. He should open training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He can come off that list at any time. Coates is fast and can track passes deep but he drops too many passes and has been held back by injuries and inconsistencies as a pro. He's falling behind already in the competition for the no3 WR spot behind Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. Rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster should win that job.

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski not limited

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) has no limitations as training camp opens, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You can expect the usual antics from New England and Gronkowski. He won't practice much in camp, might see a little preseason time and will generally be good to go Week 1. Which is why they handle him with kid gloves--at this point they just want him healthy. Gronkowski is the first tight end being taken in early drafts (of course) and the No. 18 player off the board.

BAL - QB Colin Kaepernick has Ravens' interest

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) has interest from the Baltimore Ravens, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not sure how long Joe Flacco will be out. We've heard anything from 3-to-6 weeks to 'soon'. But Kaepernick would be a decent option in this offense and with the weapons and run game there, we could see him be successful. We've thought all along that it would take an injury to get Kaepernick in camp. Whether or not the Ravens pull the trigger, it seems pretty clear that we were right.

CAR - QB Cam Newton wants to rebound

    Source: ESPN - Jeff Darlington

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton took his disappointing 2016 campaign personally and said the upcoming season isn't just another year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

First and foremost he needs more offensive line help, and we aren't sure adding former first round pick and recent Vikings turnstile Matt Kalil is going to do the trick. Add in a need for better skill position players and we have concerns. Rookie running back Christian McCaffrey should help, but is it enough? We won't bet on Newton but we won't bet on him as heavily as we did the last few years. His ADP stands at 62 overall, and he's the No. 7 quarterback coming off the board, both places we think he fits well right now.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill doing well with knee

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) said his injured knee is 'really good' and that he will wear a brace to protect it. He did admit that sliding could be an issue, however. Tannehill tore his anterior cruciate ligament late last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We expected a big jump from Tannehill last season, his first in head coach Adam Gase's offense. What we got was the same amount of mediocrity and what would have likely been a lower yardage total. Will it be different this season? We feel a bit dubious. Despite a very good set of weapons and what should be a healthier and improved offensive line, we still have our doubts about him. So do owners in current drafts, who are selecting him as the No. 22 quarterback and 142 player overall.

NO - WR Willie Snead wants to be deep threat

Source: The Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead is focused on becoming more of a deep threat this season rather than his potential long-term contract.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see that happening without Brandin Cooks (Patriots) to stretch the field. Last year, Cooks had an average of 13.06 air yards per target (21st in the league) while Snead averaged 7.38 air yards per target (94th in the league). Snead has worked on his back-end speed this offseason and may have more opportunities down the field with Cooks gone.

DEN - Denver signing RB Stevan Ridley

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (Falcons) is signing with the Denver Broncos Thursday, July 27, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ridley was with the Falcons last year for four games and appeared in one, compiling seven yards on three carries. With the injury to Devontae Booker (wrist) the Broncos needed depth at the position. Ridley will compete with guys like Bernard Pierce and Juwan Thompson for a spot on the 53-man roster. Let's just say we don't expect much from the veteran.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry deal not pressing

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry isn't worried about a contract extension and neither are the Dolphins. Owner Stephen Ross said he doesn't know if a deal will get done before the season starts and even said Landry could be franchise tagged next offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Landry is focused on continuing to improve his game in preparation for the season. Some of his upside could be hampered by another mediocre Ryan Tannehill year, but he's still a solid fantasy receiver. His ADP is currently sitting at 44 overall and 19th receiver off the board, and that sounds good to us. He's got upside though, if Tannehill can get his act together.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews suited up

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) is suited up for practice Thursday, July 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews is an OK receiver with the size to be more, which makes him frustrating to watch. On top of that, you have a team which added Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, so the outlook of his role looks bleak. Right now he is trending as the No. 46 receiver in drafts, and we don't feel that's off the mark.

KC - QB Alex Smith lands $2 million

    Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith will collect a $2 million check for reporting to camp Thursday, July 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith may have Pat Mahomes lurking about, but the rookie isn't ready for prime time, so his job is safe this year. However, while he is durable and consistent for an NFL quarterback, he produces very little in the way of fantasy points, and his ADP hangs at a well-deserved 162 overall, 26th quarterback off the board in early drafts.

    Saturday Update

DEN - RB C.J. Anderson in great shape

Source: The Denver Post - Nick Kosmider

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson is in his best shape "in three or four years," according to head coach Vance Joseph.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Anderson has been primed for big years in the past, but there always seems to be a nagging injury or issue that holds him back. Jamaal Charles and Devontae Booker (once he is recovered from his wrist injury) should also play roles in the backfield, making it harder to get excited about Anderson's prospects this year. His ADP has been steadily dropping in the offseason, so at least his price is more affordable than it was last year.

LAC - Mike Williams may avoid surgery

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) will likely open training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but the team is optimistic he can avoid surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's still difficult to picture Williams at or near the top of end of his range of outcomes carrying this back problem into his rookie camp. Surgery is obviously still a possibility, and if it comes to pass, Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams will get upgrades.

This is likely just to be cautious, as all signs have pointed to a full offseason recovery for Mariota. He could be a strong QB1 that you can get outside of the top 8 quarterbacks in your draft.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell to face consequences?

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ray Fittipaldo

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell will face consequences for not signing his franchise tag tender and missing training camp, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. 'There is no question we are a group that values the team-building process,' Tomlin said Thursday, July 27. 'And doing it in this setting, so yes, there is value, and yes, there are consequences for not being here. That's the reality of it.' Pittsburgh cannot fine Bell for his absence because he has not signed his tender. 'They're untold as we sit here,' Tomlin said, when asked about the nature of those consequences.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

While this is unlikely to keep Bell sidelined during the season and we should trust him to be in top shape when he does report, it doesn't help the long term prognosis for his contract situation with the team.

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Tajae Sharpe (foot) will not participate in practice Saturday, July 29, and is a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sharpe has gone from possible starter at this time last year to fighting for the #3 wide receiver spot. This won't help his cause.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman discussing extension

Source: NFL Network - Michael Silver

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman is talking with the Falcons about a possible five-year contract extension that would make him one of the highest paid running backs in the NFL.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Freeman has earned it and he is more deserving of a long-term deal at market value than Tevin Coleman, who is a free agent in 2019. Freeman's upside is limited by Coleman, but he is still a low-first/early-second round quality pick almost sure to deliver despite sharing with the speedy back from Indiana.

BAL - QB Colin Kaepernick still an option for BAL

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) is still considered an option for the Baltimore Ravens but part of the decision will depend on QB Joe Flacco's (back) status.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kaepernick will only be necessary if it looks like Flacco's back isn't getting better and could affect him in season. He should get signed at some point once teams get a good look at their backup situation or a starter injury happens in camp or the preseason.

ARI - WR John Brown could miss up to a week

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (quad) is expected to miss a few days and perhaps may be a week with a quad injury, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not what you wanted to hear if you are banking on a rebound for Brown, but his ADP is still well outside of the top 4-5 rounds where you get your sure starters, so he was likely underpriced considering his range of outcomes. As long as he returns within a week, this shouldn't greatly change our approach to Brown in drafts.

TB - RB Jacquizz Rodgers expected to rise to occasion

    Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Jacquizz Rodgers is being counted on to 'step up' for the first three games of the season while Doug Martin serves the remainder of his PED suspension from last season, according to ESPN.com's Jenna Laine.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers is available in the second half of drafts and should start the first three games against at least a few weak run defenses based on last year's performances. He's a free strong flex play at his current ADP.

HOU - Deshaun Watson 'ahead of schedule'

    Source: SI.com - Albert Breer

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson's pace in picking up the offense has 'impressed everyone in the building,' according to SI.com's Albert Breer, who added 'the big thing is that while he makes rookie mistakes, he's done well not to repeat them.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is positive news on Watson's development, but Tom Savage has also drawn praise and he'll be the starter in Week 1 barring a dramatic change in this situation. Watson will stay on our waiver wire watch list unless we hear signs that he is pushing Savage to start.

PIT - QB Roethlisberger unsure about playing past 2017

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has yet to commit to playing beyond this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This isn't really a change in status, but it does remind us of the early offseason drama about Roethlisberger's status this year and in the future. The team drafted Josh Dobbs in the fourth round to develop behind backup Landry Jones to address the eventual retirement of their long-time starter.

JAX - Leonard Fournette shines as receiver

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike DiRocco

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette impressed as a receiver out of the backfield during both individual and team drills Thursday, July 27, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fournette is a better receiver out of the backfield than advertised, so he could approach 30-40 receptions as a lead back. He has a high floor in terms of projected workload on the ground, and any involvement in the passing game enhances his upside.

ARI - RB David Johnson expects big numbers

Source: The Associated Press - Bob Baum

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson believes he can reach 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards this year because of how much he has improved as a receiver. 'I would have had it last year if I didn't mess up on those routes,' Johnson said. 'I missed so many routes last year.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No matter how you cut it, Johnson is worth a top two pick this year. If John Brown is healthy, it might reduce his targets a small amount, but if Johnson is accurate about his improvement as a route runner, it won't matter.

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles did not practice with the rest of the team Thursday, July 27.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team will take it slowly with Charles, but he has no limitations and will at least have a sizable role as a pass-catching back as long as he's healthy. Charles could surprise and get close to previous form, turning this into a true RBBC, but his workload will have to be managed in any event.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy dominates practice

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy made practice look 'effortless' Thursday, July 27, according to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW.com, and Buscaglia believes McCoy will 'define the offense in 2017.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy is playing close to the highest level of his career going into his age 29 season. That is close to the ledge for backs, but his situation is also very good, making McCoy worth the first-round pick it costs to make him your RB1 this year.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins looks sharp

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, July 27, but he didn't look hindered by his surgically-repaired foot during drills, according to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We will watching Watkins closely, but there were no clear signs that he was in danger of being limited or out throughout the season during training camp and the preseason last year. Watkins will require faith on the part of his drafters, but he still has first-round upside at a third-round price.

CAR - Christian McCaffrey active in passing game

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton
Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey was targeted on an excessive number of short passes and screens Thursday, July 27, which could indicate there are 'big plans for him.' He even drew a lot of 'oohs and ahs' from fans on the hill overlooking the practice field.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCaffrey could exceed 50-60 receptions with emphasis, which is enough to make him a solid RB2 and justify his ADP, but as long as Jonathan Stewart is healthy it will be hard for the rookie to get to RB1 production levels.

CLE - DeShone Kizer making notable progress

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB DeShone Kizer is coming along 'faster than expected,' according to head coach Hue Jackson. He's starting to understand the offense much better compared to organized team activities, when Kizer 'struggled' calling plays. He showed improvement in that regard and Jackson added that he made some good throws and didn't turn the ball over.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cody Kessler is a known quantity, so it's just a matter of time before Kizer takes over the position for the Browns. He is one to watch in fantasy leagues because he has running ability that adds to his weekly ceiling, he plays behind a great offensive line, and the Browns will be playing from behind a lot.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson has strong first day of camp

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones
Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson 'showed signs' of why he was highly regarded coming out of college during the first day of training camp Thursday, July 27. With no restrictions, unlike during spring practices, Doctson went all out, displaying great footwork at the line and crisp route-running, as well as good hands. The second-year receiver is 'encouraged' by how good he feels and believes he will have a big season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Doctson has a tremendous game in the air and his size/speed/athleticism combination is difficult for any defensive back to match up with. Washington's pass offense supported three fantasy relevant wide receivers last year and Doctson could make it three with Terrelle Pryor and Jamison Crowder this year. He's very cheap considering his high ceiling talent and quality surrounding offense.

TEN - Corey Davis not at training camp

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It is hard to believe that rookie deals aren't getting done before camp with the little room the CBA gives the deals to vary, but here we are. Hopefully Davis doesn't have a similar situation to Joey Bosa over offset language. Obviously if this extends well into camp, it's not good for Davis's rookie year prospects.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens are already down Dennis Pitta (hip) and Darren Waller (suspension) at tight end. Ben Watson, Nick Boyle, and 2016 second-round pick Maxx Williams are the current tight ends, but if this is serious the team could shop for another body (Gary Barnidge?) depending on Watson and Williams' status.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) is practicing for the second consecutive day Friday, July 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Matthews knee tendinitis doesn't seem to be as big of an issue now that camp has opened. We are watching Nelson Agholor closely, as he had a great offseason by most accounts and fits in the slot, Matthews' home position.

Source: Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, July 28, because he suffered an ankle sprain during a walkthrough Thursday, July 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Langford might be fighting for passing down snaps with rookie Tarik Cohen and free agent signing Benny Cunningham. He needs to get healthy or Langford could be irrelevant in this backfield this year.

MIA - WR Jarvis Landry to play out rookie deal

    Source: 1500ESPN.com - Tom Pelissero

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry did not receive a contract extension offer from the Dolphins this offseason and is expected to play out the final year of his rookie deal.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Landry should get paid in free agency next year, but it is unlikely that it will be in Miami with Kenny Stills contract from this year on the books and DeVante Parker looking like a breakout star. This also points to Landry not being the focal point of the passing game this year the way he was in the past. He's overpriced in the third round.

IND - QB Andrew Luck unsure when he will be cleared

    Source: The Indianapolis Star

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) told the Indianapolis Star's Stephen Holder there is 'no reason to freak out,' but he remains on the preseason Physically Unable to Participate list and uncertain about being ready in time for the regular-season opener.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are freaking out due to Luck's shoulder injury. Luck now won't commit to being available for Week 1 of the regular season. He's been slow to recover for what seems like forever. The Colts need to be incredibly cautious...just like fantasy owners considering Luck. Wait to see what his health status is like as we get late into August. If healthy, Luck is a top-3 fantasy quarterback.

CIN - RB Giovani Bernard 'looked incredible' Friday

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (knee) looked very impressive during practice Friday, July 28, in the opinion of The Cincinnati Enquirer's Paul Dehner Jr. Bernard is eight months recovered from suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Here's the full quote from Dehner: "Post first practice observation: Giovani Bernard looked incredible. Not just for a guy 8 months removed from ACL. For any NFL RB." That's strong. It's also July 29. We think Joe Mixon could be the primary back for the Bengals with Bernard competing with Jeremy Hill for reserve snaps/time/targets this season. Although it looks like this is far from settled. Stay tuned.

Free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) is interested in playing for the Baltimore Ravens, according to sources. Kaepernick has not talked with any teams about money.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kaepernick would be a backup to Joe Flacco if added but he may want to wait and see what happens during camp with other teams. If injuries hit, Kaepernick could get an opportunity to be the starter elsewhere. That's just not a possibility with an established quarterback like Flacco in Baltimore.

NE - RB Mike Gillislee the new LeGarrette Blount?

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee handled the first carry at the goal line at practice Saturday, July 29, and appears to be the 'top candidate' to replace LeGarrette Blount as the big back in the Patriots' offense, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners are wondering the same question. Gillislee is not going to get 18 rushing touchdowns like Blount did last year, but he could fill a role that is quite fantasy relevant. We could see Gillislee score near double-digit touchdowns as the Patriots goal-line back. They will still continue to use James White an/or Dion Lewis in a RBBC.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need to push McCoy in camp or give him many reps in the preseason. Under new OC Rick Dennison, McCoy remains in a running back friendly system and is a top-5 fantasy back in any league.

NYG - WR Odell Beckham Jr. will be paid

    Source: NJ.com - Dan Duggan

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. 'deserves to get paid,' owner John Mara said Friday, July 28. 'We're going to pay him,' Mara said. 'It's just a question of when we enter into the contract. And I don't have a timetable on it right now.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Beckham isn't going anywhere. The Giants exercised his fifth-year option which keeps him under contract through the 2018 season. The Giants know the contract is likely to make him the richest WR in the league...and it will take a bit more time to get that monumental contract done.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith-Schuster is an exciting rookie wide receiver who has always reminded us of a young Anquan Boldin. We'll see if this ankle problem continues to bother him during camp. The rookie from USC is likely to win the no3 job at wideout behind superstar Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Foreman is a big back who could actually run with more power. The offseason has been full of reports about how the team wants to use Lamar Miller a bit less in order to keep him fresh all season long. Fantasy owners want Cobb to stay healthy! His numbers are unlikely to be what they were two years ago (91-1,287-12), but as the no3 WR for the Packers he still is a fantasy commodity. Cobb should be projected for around 70 catches in 2017. That makes him a WR4 with upside in most fantasy leagues. Right now his ADP is WR39 (8.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

McKinnon is competing for likely a reserve role behind Dalvin Cook. The rookie Cook is the starter in our eyes, but McKinnon's value as an explosive playmaker and valuable receiver out of the backfield cannot be overlooked. Davis was a top-5 pick this year and the first WR off the board in the 2017 NFL draft. He's got 'my ball' mentality and has no problem winning contested catches. In addition to Gabriel and Roberts, WRs Reginald Davis III, Devin Fuller, Marvin Hall and Josh Magee practiced at the position Friday, July 28.
