    Market Report( Thursday

Sharps (professional wagerers) haven’t acted on the team side yet in Thursday Night’s Denver/Oakland game that will be nationally televised by NFL Network. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t have an opinion. Let’s take a closer look at the game all of you are studying to kick off your weekend. We’ll also have room to briefly touch on Saturday’s Army/Navy game as well…which has shown some sharp early sentiment.

    DENVER AT OAKLAND
Opening Line: Denver -10, total of 50
Current Line: Denver -10, total of 48.5
Sharps know that the public likes to bet favorites. So, if the sharps liked Denver here, they would have acted quickly at the key number of 10. That would have moved the line up to at least Denver -10.5 by the time square bettors (the public) were ready to act. That DIDN’T happen here…which suggests sharps are in a “pass or dog” mode for this divisional rivalry, and are waiting to see if they can get better than +10 before kickoff.
Now, Oakland has struggled so much in recent weeks that there’s not an overwhelming passion for the dog. This is not a “the sharps love Oakland” indicator by any means. Many will leave the team side alone. Those who will bet are looking for better value on the Raiders. Sharps aren’t afraid to take big ugly dogs. They know patience is a virtue when that’s their target.
Sharps did like the Under here. That’s keyed, we hear, by respect for Denver’s defense and Peyton Manning’s ability to run clock with a lead. The drop from 50 had stopped at 48.5 by press time.
    ARMY VS. NAVY (in Philadelphia)
Opening Line: Navy -8.5, total of 57
Current Line: Navy -7, total of 56.5
There have been some stores that saw action drive the line down to Navy -6.5. There has been some support for Navy once the number goes below the key number of seven. So, we may see a tug-of-war situation on game day with bettors on Army +7 and Navy -6.5.
The public, when it gets involved with this matchup, generally supports the favorite. Well, those with proud connections to either institution support their institution! The rest bet the favorite. We’re hearing that sharps really like Army at anything higher than the key number of seven based on their performance vs. Air Force and a rare shot to win the Commander-in-Chief Trophy. If the public drives Navy higher before kickoff, sharps will buy more of the dog at anything better than a touchdown.
Note that Philadelphia is a neutral site. Army is based in New York. Navy in Annapolis, Maryland. The weather forecast suggests that a mild December will continue, which is why the Over/Under hasn’t dropped much from its high opening perch.
