    Best defense in the NFL

    Defense wins Championships. Who do you have as your Top defense in the NFL right now.

    Baltimore Ravens- This defense is getting older with Ray Lewis anchoring the LB core and Ed Reed anchoring the secondary. But these guys still are extremely effective. Ray Lewis has 30 tackles which ranks him 22nd in the league and Ed Reed has 17 tackles, 2 int's and 1 Sack. They also have a pretty solid supporting cast with Terrell Suggs at ROLB who is 5th in the league in sacks but what this guy does best rarely shows up in the stats column. He pressures the passer relentlessly and puts the QB on the turf all game long. They also have a nice young cornerback in Ladarius Webb who has 27 tackles, 2 INT's and 1 sack as well. He also had 3 pass deflections against the Jets. Anchoring the 3-4 defense is the wide bodied Terrence Cody. Baltimore ranks 3rd in Yards/play at 4.4, second in pts/game at 14.4 and they're holding teams to a 33% third down conversion rate. Their glaring weakness or vulnerability thus far has been penalties as they lead the league in defensive penalty yards at 309. They more than make up for this with the turnovers they create. They've picked off 6 passes so far which ties them for 5th in the league and have forced a 11 fumbles which ranks them second only behind the Redskins. Amazingly enough they've recovered 8 fumbles and have scored a combined 4 defensive TD's through 4 games this year. They are I believe the best defense in the NFL currently...

    Changing of the guard. Lots of guys fail to analyze teams. They still think Chi and Pit are grwat teams. You can see this in the lines. Bettors still over value both teams and will continue to do so until next year.

    Offenses pretty obvious so far with GB, NO and NE. Easy. Def a bit harder to rank though.

    I dunno about Tennessee, they give away a lot of 15 yard pens and some other dumb ones, don't usually get much pressure on the QB (unless its Colt McCoy).

    Flacco couldn't get much going against the Jets (numbers would have been slightly better but for the numerous drops by Dixon). Several overthrown passes.

    I like what the Texans have going on the defensive side of the ball theyre winning with defense right now. one of the best right now in pressuring the QB with their multiple blitz packages.

    Yeah, I would argue for HOU tops and SF/PIT/BAL to round out the top four. I always value defence over offence because of the double-threat potential. Cheers

    You can certainly make the argument, but you can also say they've played quite a lot of weak competition, esp being in the NFC West. Not their fault, but tougher to get a proper gauge. They should certainly be among the top 5 though.

    Combine the offensive strength of schedule faced with the defensive ranking and there is your answer.

    It is not who you think using those perimeters.

    Find a top 10 ranked defensive team that has faced Green Bay, Detroit, Carolina, New Orleans, Philly. And still holds a top 10 overall defensive ranking.

    I will save you the trouble.

    Atlanta. When healthy they are worthy of consideration. The first 5 games they did not have Jon Abraham or Jonathon Babineaux or both. Last game they were without their shut down corner and a starting linebacker.

    Do I think they are the best defense in the NFL. Never really thought about it and it is not really important to me. I approach each game on the matchups that it presents.

    For those looking for a longshot future bet.......do not overlook the worth of the Atlanta defense.

    The Niiners defense is damn good. In my mind the best linebacker tandem in football in Bowman and Willis.

    Isaac Sapoaga is a beast against the run.

    Until they face someone who can beat them over the top.......who knows. The did handle Detroit in their own building when the Lions were playing very well.

    Overall SOS is not good but they are worthy of consideration.

    Chicago isn't too bad but I don't agree with the guy that said Denver has a good defense, look at the teams that have slapped them around this year.
