    Hammer drops on Syracuse

    NCAA penalizes Syracuse, Boeheim

    ESPN.com news services | March 6, 2015
The NCAA on Friday suspended Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim for nine ACC games and has taken away scholarships as a result of a multiyear investigation into the university's athletic programs.

"Over the course of a decade, Syracuse University did not control and monitor its athletics programs," the NCAA said in a statement, "and its head men's basketball coach failed to monitor his program."

The NCAA suspended Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim for nine ACC games, saying he failed to "promote an atmosphere of compliance and monitor his staff."
Syracuse's penalties also include a five-year probation and for the school to vacate all wins in which ineligible men's basketball students played in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12 and ineligible football students played in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07.

In addition, the NCAA agreed to accept the university's decision for the men's basketball team to not participate in any postseason games this season, including the ACC tournament.

The NCAA said that the violation, which were self-reported by Syracuse and dated back to 2001, included academic misconduct, extra benefits, the failure to follow its drug testing policy and impermissible booster activity.

Other violations included impermissible academic assistance and services, the head basketball coach's failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance and monitor his staff, and the school's lack of control over its athletics program.

The sanctions do not affect Syracuse's 2003 national championship title or team.

The NCAA finished its 10-year investigation into Syracuse athletics in late October 2014. Boeheim and football coach Scott Shafer were among the school officials to appear before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions.

The school initiated the case, which includes academics, when it self-reported potential athletic department violations to the NCAA in 2007.

In an effort to be proactive, Syracuse self-imposed the postseason ban on the men's basketball team for this season in February.

In 2012, Syracuse declared former center Fab Melo ineligible for the NCAA tournament days before it started. Melo also missed three Big East games during the season because of an academic issue. Early in the 2012-13 season, former forward James Southerland sat out six games for an academic issue but helped lead the Orange to the Final Four.

In March 2012, school officials said the university had self-reported possible violations of its internal drug policy by former members of the team and that the NCAA was investigating. No members of that team were involved.

Complete joke. Yet, Calipari keeps on rolling. NCAA just pissed they didn't find anything on Bernie Fine after that BS story and started digging. Do it to any SEC school or any big time program in general and they will find all the same shit. D.J. Fluker admits to getting money and nothing. Well done NCAA, let Ped State get all their scholarships back after one of the most despicable things imaginable happens at a school, but shut us down for some kids smoking weed and not going to class. Not to mention, there isn't even a drug policy mandatory from the NCAA but SU has one because they are private school where academics come first. So much shadiness throughout the sport and the NCAA comes down on one school at a time, they need to go or start looking into every damn school.

Yeah because what Boheim and Cuse did for over a decade compares to Rose's SAT score under Calipari... Cals punishment was more than harsh enough. A vacated final four? Suck it up buttercup. Not like Cuse was gonna be good anytime soon anyways...

Camby, Rose, World Wide Wes...all the same shit. DaJuan Coleman from Syracuse was offered $200,000 to go to Kentucky. Yeah not like they were going to be good with one of the best recruiting classes coming in next year. This just shut down the program for a decade over a drug policy that isn't even mandatory, and college kids not going to class. Look at any school for eight years and see what you find. NCAA is just a joke, everyone knows it.

Yeah I'm sure Kentucky offered Coleman 200k... And somehow he ended up in a meaningless season at Cuse while Kentucky marches on to a championship. Kids go to UK because in 365 days a title game and first round draft selection are on the agenda. They don't have to commit major violations for that reason alone. But continue the speculation... Guess finger pointing is the only thing you can do when your own team is the one sitting with the dunce hat on...

The NCAA is the only one with the dunce hat on. No need to point fingers when what I'm saying is fact.

Someone made a good point about the NCAA, don't lie to them and don't get caught. Syracuse did both and that's why the hammer got dropped.
