Oddsmaker Says Steph Curry's Warriors 12.5-Point Favorites over Shaq's Lakers

The Golden State Warriors are far and away the most dominant NBA team of their era, and at least one Las Vegas bookmaker has them heavy favorites against a legendary squad from years past.
The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook's Jeff Sherman told Nick Friedell of ESPN.com the Warriors, led by star Stephen Curry, would be 12.5-point favorites over the Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers from 2001.
After hearing that Shaquille O'Neal said his Los Angeles Lakers teams that won three titles in a row could "easily" beat the Warriors, Curry defended Golden State's honor.
"Oh, he's dead wrong," Curry told ESPN, with a confident smile, prior to Wednesday night's game against the Toronto Raptors. "Of course. We'd beat them. We can go back-and-forth all day."
The Lakers won three straight NBA titles from 2000-02. No team has done that since, although the Warriors could match the run this season.

Hypotheticals between different era's are tough..

Thinking back, I don't think Derek Fisher would have slowed down Curry at all.. Shaq would have dominated the paint.. Shooting goes to the Warriors regardless with the Splash bro's and KD.. Warriors probably win just because their ability to score more points in the end, I agree..

That Laker team with Kobie and Shaq was so damn dominate though.. Kobe would surely get his... Shaq would have been spoon fed dunks all day long against the Warriors..

The Lakers would simply go down low since the Warriors have shit for controlling a big man . Problem is , not many teams in the NBA have a dominant big man now . The game has changed drastically .
Shaq would go 20-53 Free Throws , but half the Warriors team would be fouled out because they would continue to get the ball down low .
The Big men use to control the NBA , is now like a Hurry Up offense . It's simply about offense , these guys said hell with defense along the transition phase .

    Laughable

Shaq would be unstoppable underneath and Kobe could match Golden States big scorers almost single handedly.

    2001-02 Lakers starters

    PG - Derek Fisher

    SG - Kobe Bryant

    SF - Rick Fox

    PF - Robert Horry

    C - Shaquille Oneal

    Head Coach - Phil Jackson

    2018-19 Warriors starters

    PG - Steph Curry

    SG - Klay Thompson

    SF - Andre Iguodala

    PF - Kevin Durant

    C - Boogie Cousins (injured)

    Head Coach - Steve Kerr

Which matchup does Golden State win? Maybe Curry against Fisher? Even with that I’d be on +12.5 ALL DAY LONG!

Pointless to even set these hypothetical lines, what's the point? Sherman should be spending his time setting future lines for matchups that can actually happen rather than with this shit.

    GSW would kill that line.

the game has completely moved away from Shaq-style offense. if it was a highly viable offense, a few teams would still play it and play it effectively.

just my opinion, but i think kobe is wildly overrated. he made alot of tough shots, but he took alot of tough shots. KD and curry are superior offensively

game is completely different than when that lakers team was dominant

Market ploy... Betting has just become illegal in America so say something stupid to get stupid people talking about who wins and bingo you have brought more people into basketball betting.

Nobody is running it because there is no player as physically dominant as Shaq. Probably never will be again.

Maybe so but my opinion would be that Lakers squad was unbelievable on the D end and would smother the Warriors.

Defense wins championships and that Laker team played defense.. Shaq when dialed in was a BEAST down low, Warriors have no one to defend that big monster.

Warriors are so soft and paper thin today outside Green they might all get injured.. Durant and Curry mainly.. Lakers would put the hurt on them.. Kobe could match Durant for sure.. It comes down to if Fisher could contain Curry even a little bit..

If the teams were allowed to play defense then GSW of today could not beat the 80s Lakers, Celtics, 76ers
90s Pistons, Rockets, or 2001+ Lakers, Spurs

Miss the 80's when players didn't shake hands and a hard foul today would be considered a love tap back then...

As discussed above, if you take the rules from the 80`s, GSW as constructed would have a hard time against
    86 Celts, 87 Lakers, etc.

This GS team was built for these rules, and under these rules would probably stomp those teams.
It all comes down to how physical you let em play.

Kerr is an ant against Phil.
It will be a gentleman sweep in favor of the Lakers.

Well not 1 on 1 but Horry could shoot just as well as Durant and him and Fox played excellent complimentary defense and would force KD to make ridiculous shots.

Doesn’t it kinda depend how it officiated? Sure if the rules as they are now no beef with it, I just can’t see this warrior team going back and playing back when this was a physical sport and beating any of the dominate teams of their respective eras.

If it was officiated as a basketball game then the Warriors would have no chance
