I've played both. NFL players wear padding, AFL players don't. Lot of stop start play in NFL, AFL is a constant running game. NFL players couldn't even get close to fitness required for AFL.

oh my... you are joing right... stirring the pot

these guys are the fittest mofos around. as far as endurance goes no other game requires so much aerobic fitness

not athletes... u need everything to play the game- strength, aerobic fitness and skill

go try it... a) you will be ****** after 10 minutes...b) u will be lucky to touch the ball let alone get a clean posession c) if you do get a posession try putting the ball on someones chest running at full tilt and them not breaking stride.

american football requires so much anerobic short burst fitness. different athletes..

The US would dominate any sport in any country if athletes would be raised in it like AFL. OTH there isn't a country that could field a team that wouldn't get destroyed 87-0 in American Football

Reason: No place else has the American KneeGrow

Even white studs like Clay Matthews and Gronk are special breeds no other country could come close to producing

Sure Rugby players are tough, ok size, but speed and athleticism are laughable

AFL PLAYERS are on the field for longer, and run further, than any other mainstream professional sportsmen in the world.

GPS data reveals AFL players, on average, run 14km a match on the League's biggest ground, Patersons Stadium.

In English soccer's premier league, players run around 11.7km per match, while in Australia's elite rugby league matches, players will normally run between 8-10km per game depending on their position.

Adding to the physical demands on Australian football players, unlike other sports, the dimensions of AFL arenas are variable

In an match, players run on average 13km at the MCG, one kilometre less than at Patersons Stadium.

The intensity is also 12 points higher on the exertion index in Perth at 145 compared to 133 at the MCG.

Over the years individual AFL stars have been tracked covering even more ground.

St Kilda legend Robert Harvey - considered a running machine when he played through the 1990s and 2000s - reportedly covered 19.6 km in 2000.

Hawthorn Brownlow medallist Shane Crawford was also a marathon man on the field, once tracked running 17 km in 2005.

Interestingly, new studies have revealed that defenders run the most, travelling an average distance of 13.5km per match.

Forwards run 12.89km a match and nomadic players (midfielders, utilities, and ruckmen) run 13.46km a match.

However, midfielders now spend significantly less time on the ground (109 minutes), compared to almost 117 minutes for defenders.

All 17 clubs participated in last season's GPS tracking, with 1653 individual data files collected.

Players spend on average 5mins 25 secs per match running at above 18km/h.

I admire AFL players for their endurance and aerobic fitness. While the game certainly does require some physical toughness it certainly does not compare in that area to collision sports like American Football or either of the Rugby codes. I know this because I have played Rugby League, Rugby Union and Aussie Rules football.

There are plenty of areas where Aussie Rules Football requires far more of their players. I'd suggest fitness and agility for a start. That said JJ was looking at physical toughness and in this area those sports require more than Australian Rules Football.

    JJ comp
letely wrong on the great athletes part - they are definitely that.

    With that said...

Paging Demetriou's army of propaganda tro
    lls.

One good lick/tackle would end any afl players career. Fair comparison, this is not fox news.

American football players are the most athletic of all contact sports because of the "negro" (obviously) but that said why is there more white quarter backs in the NFL than black? because the white man makes up for athleticism in skill/technique. Sometimes JJ the most athletic guys arent always the best for the sport/position.

International rugby union players would probably take out a RB, even with padding and helmet...
