I know it is dying but does anyone have any interest in the sport anymore?

Visited the hounds in T. J. back in the day. Too many bumps on thee turns to wager any serious money. O.K. as entertainment.

I go around 4 times per year, its about a 2 hour drive from my place to Wheeling Downs, WV.... A carload of buddies and I will leave really early on a Saturday, get up to the parking lot and tailgate and BS for an hour or so... head in and hit the daytime races and booze through... live track so its a good time... Then in between day and night races there is a strip club right in the same parking lot so we go there and hit the buffet up, BYOB, and watch some snatch... head back to night races... then stay at hotel,, party, play cards, etc. We don't do it as much lately but use to do it for years and it was a blast. I love greyhounds better than the ponies.

Used to bet on the greys a few times. Don't do it much anymore. Can get lucky with a roughy sometimes. Better chance than horses imo.

Used to go a lot when there was money at the tracks and when satellite first started and there was money. Now it just isnt there. Seabrook NH was the place for awhile. And you could bet simulcasts all over Fla. Also a couple down in Mass but money wasnt as good as Seabrook. And when I lived in Jax we used to go over to Orange Park a few times a week in the late 90s, but it was really dying off by then, but it was more for fun and horse simulcasts than the dogs. I hit a few 5 figure supers though back when the money was there. Now obviously with no money in the pools it doesnt matter what odds the dogs are you only get whatever the pool is, and that is if you are the only one with a ticket. I used to know guys who bet into the Pick 4. Well they would put almost half the pool in themselves (no one played it), then they would complain when it paid less than they spent and there were only 2 tickets.


But yeah just another example of Americana going the way of the dinosaur.

except in fla it's is on it's death bed. if less and less people go there is less money in the pools and that tends to discourage big bettors. peta stepped in and played the cruelty to animals card and removed it from new england and they are headed elsewhere..

take a track like tucson with an open box between 4 and 5, most people aren't aware of the huge advantage that gives those dogs versus other tracks where you want to primarily stick with 1, 2, and 8.

simple things to know that will help you
1) POST POSITION IS ALMOST EVERYTHING
2) in grade a and b races, go with class. in grade c races look for grade acceptability (dogs that run well in c races). grade d and worse look for fast starts (these races have tons of bumping so you want to be out front)

i live 3 miles from the palm beach track and go quite often. poker now has taken the place of greyhounds. Every room here in florida has a poker room and the room is 80 percent of the track revenue. it is a dying sport. I like watching but i have a adopted greyhound and after seeing what he went through for 6 years i have a hard time betting on them. I still do but not seriously. I will be a 2 qu box 1.3.5 and tri box 1.3.5 run it through all 12 races. usually will hit one or two throughout the day.

Thats wrong. There are dozens of ways to cheat with the dogs, most of them undetectable. So while there is no direct in race cheating you can make sure a dog wont win by doing all sorts of things to them before the race.

Used to go to the dogs twice a week back in the UK .... saw some huge gambles landed ... remember a couple of times watching the money go down on a dog ... the bookies took the price off the board .. and when the race started the heavily bet dog was put flat on its ass on 1st bend .... left 30+ lengths down .... the dog got up and flew home ... winning by 10+ lengths.

I generally look for dogs drawn on the inside that have the quickest starts.

this might have been true 20 years ago when purses were quite a bit bigger, but have you seen the pools recently at places like tucson? someone's going to hurt their own dog and face possible arrest to get a piece of a $100 win pool?
i suppose you could be smart enough to have 10 different online accounts and bet the max at each that weren't tied into the pool, but that would raise quite a few red flags.

I have a track about 5 miles away from me (in the UK). It is a good night out.

The family and I can get a genuinely good meal and throw down a few fun bets. Not interested in greyhounds from a genuine betting perspective, inside info is a must to win at that game. Book overrounds/juice on the average race runs upto 25% which is not much better that the Tote.

yeah we had 5 tracks here in wisconsin 20 years ago. now we have NONE. last one closed about 3 years ago, sad how many jobs got lost and how many great people lost one of the most/only fun things to do in their life.

Spent most of my late teens/early 20's n Wheeling Island, so learned a little about the dogs while there.

This was before the casino, even before the video poker machine days in WVa.

There are unethical breeders still, guys will do wild shit, even for a few hundred bucks. Dying sport for sure..here and in the UK.

Most guys are ok, but some breeders need to be banned, just like horses. Guys will do anything for a slight edge.

Always seemed to me they favor certain numbers certain nights. Posted odds mean 0, bet post positions.

Sharp guys who take a little risk on tri's did well. Bridge jumpers and their 500 show bets were always good for a laugh, hard sport to make 10 percent in.

Remeber the night my drunken buddy claimed a damn dog, think it was 500 bucks, had no clue what he was doing. He thought you posted the 500 and if the dog won-placed or showed, you got the purse share and your 500 back. Wound up me and another buddy bailed him out @400, sold the dog for 900 to a friend at work who raised them full time.

If you admittedly know nothing then pay attention to these 2 things. Dogs that look hyper versus dogs that are mopeing. Keep track early of the kennels that win/place or run eyecatching efforts. Kennels often run in cycles. Don't bet a lot on w/p/s as the pools are likely very small.

Many people including myself made our living off the hounds in the 80's. It is quite certainly handicapable but a ton of work. Most successful cappers would watch multiple replays of EVERY race.

yes, why it died. Used to be avg 750K pools and they took 15% and there were limited exotic wagers such as twin tri and pick six. In the early 90's all the sharp guys were standing around looking at each other often making similar plays into 300K pools with a 25% take. Too bad. They ruined a great gig.

Almost moved there when they first opened as did some of my cohorts as there was some pretty easy money given the lack of knowledge of the locals.
