Trainer Bob Baffert announced Sunday morning that Medina Spirit, winner of the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 1, has tested positive for betamethasone, a corticosteroid, and faces a possible disqualification from the race – the first medication DQ since Dancer's Image lost his Derby victory in 1968 after a disputed positive test for the anti-inflammatory phenylbutazone.

If the drug is confirmed in a split sample it would be Baffert's fifth medication violation since May 2020.

Baffert said his assistant, Jimmy Barnes called Baffert yesterday while he was en route to the the airport in California for a flight to Kentucky to notify him that he had been served by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission after the post-race sample came back positive for 21 picograms of the medication.

Baffert insisted Medina Spirit has never been treated with betamethasone. "I don't know what's going on, but there's something that is not right," Baffert said.

Sort of what I’m thinking... do the owners have to pay back the winnings? Trainers suspended? Baffert? Race is over. They aren’t scheduling a redo.

Exactly. What sort of quote is that?

Sounds like deflecting, Bob. Cmon, man.

As a trainer, isn't it his his responsibility to make sure the horse is healthy, prepared, and in accordance w/ all state laws? Fk the Derby. A sport fan really has only right:

*To feel like what he's watching is above board.

yes owner, trainer, jockey all have to return winnings if they don't have an appeal that over turns it

bettors obviously keep their winnings and no refunds for losers

That would change the SBR Kentucky Derby contest results dramatically if you had the second place finisher. Would definitely change the top 5 finishers. Mandaloun would have paid more as the winner in the contest.

You may get a credit from TVG or Twinspires but I wouldn't hold my breath

Going to be tempting for them to give him a slap on the wrist due to TV ratings of a triple crown race.

What's wild is....when Medina Spirit won, I called my dad and said..watch the horse test positive. When I said it I was half joking,, but knowing Baffert, there was some seriousness to it....and the horse tests positive. Unreal

The derby result should stand and the horse, as well as any other Baffert-trained horse, should be banned from the TC and Breeders' Cup races.

My dad was saying that he thinks his organization might have gotten so big he doesn't even have real control anymore. Regardless, I agree with this post, as he should still be held responsible.

Would love to see him get banned for this. Wouldn't fair penance be:

*Knocking him out of the L2 Triple Crown races (at a minimum)?
