May be the rain that they have had out there. Being a major factor. Check out STR's thread. He commented on it this morning,

You guys remember the show "LUCK" from 2012 or so?
Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina (RIP) and a great cast of characters.
Filmed @ Santa Anita Race Track and it environs ( Commerce Casino)

1 season. Then it was cancelled due to PETA going berserk about horses dying on set.

Highly recommend if you can find it.

most will disagree but ill give my spin on whats happening the selection pool of horses has gone down alot over the last 5-7 years greedy owners trainers are putting out horses not ready to run. most are blaming it on drastic weather rain but i dont belive thats the whole truth

It's drug related. Trainers injecting the horses with steroids which make their hearts beat faster and they get heart attacks and die. Not weather related. When a 40/1 horse wins is usually doped.

there are narural things like a shot of caynee peper up the ass before rhey run but these are natural boosts that will slip by the vet tests. not enough to kill the poor bastards

IMO the rain washed out areas in the base of the track and the horse are landing in those holes and grooves left from the washouts.

It could be that Empire but they peeled back the surface and the base would have shown erosion which they "say" it did not. Of course we have to hope that was the truth.

I do know that because the Calif. soil is so poor, they need a lot of sand to help it drain. That sand is imported and mixed in with the other types of dirt used for the surface. I am wondering if at some point the sand was NOT fully mixed well enough and pockets of too much sand and too little sand were throughout the surface, similar to what you see in concrete that is not mixed well enough. If that occured, it would cause the overly sand laden areas to drain faster and the lesser areas slower, thus providing an opportunity to have an uneven drainage. If a horse lands directly into that loose spot, it's like hitting a hole which allows for a misstep. That misstep can certainly lead to a broken sesamoid, canon bone, or whatever. Those types of fractures can certainly lead to having to euthanize the horse as severe cases are not deemed savable.
Because we can only speculate and I doubt something like that would be made public, we are all guessing. That would be the leader in the clubhouse for me. The problem for the public will be getting the truth ( seems like a theme these days no matter what the subject is and who is saying it).
The steroid angle, as you pointed out, is incorrect and they are banned and as Biggie said, tested for . All vets have to document and turn over to the Stewards in a daily report, all medications dispensed, along with the name of the horse, trainer and owner and the amounts as well as the reason given for the treatment.
Because quite a few of these breakdowns are training, drugs makes no sense as a trainer would have to be a complete idiot( not that some aren't), to give a horse painkillers for a friggin workout. That does not make any sense to me. Having penciled in workouts for thousands of horses during my career, I can think of no reason to give painkillers prior to a workout. The mere thought boggles my mind.

It's more than likely an experimental drug injection.... new things coming out all the time. Unfortunately.... they would never think of "cheating" and avoiding drug testing. Easily done... when you aren't searching for a common drug.

Just so you know the drugs they use on human athletes are first tested on horses to see if they can get detected with testing. To think there is no doping in horse racing is naive.

If everything goes well," said Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of The Stronach Group, Santa Anita Park will re-open for racing on Friday, March 22, Ritvo announced Saturday on
Fox Sports Saturday At The Races
    .

Ritvo said workouts could be scheduled for Monday on Santa Anita's inner training track "with permission from the racing secretary." The main track will open that same morning for jogs and gallops.

anta Anita Park suffered a 22nd
    horse fatality
since Dec. 22 on Thursday morning just one day after the
main track was reopened for training
. The horse suffered a severe injury and was euthanized. A track spokesman said a “major corporate announcement” is expected this afternoon.
Princess Lili B broke both front legs at the conclusion of a half-mile workout, as first reportedby Brad Free of the Daily Racing Form and confirmed by The Times. Training will continue on the track, Free reported.

It was only the second day of training on the main track after Santa Anita suspended racing last week in response to the previous deaths.

No definitive reason for the rash of horse fatalities has been identified. After repeated inspections and dirt sampling, the rehiring of track consultant Dennis Moore and enhanced safety protocols, Santa Anita has been trying to move toward a resumption of racing on March 22.
