What's the Deal With Doctor Bob?

He has solid numbers and seems very reputable, yet is he fading away? His best numbers were in his early years and it looks like the books are catching up. He's lost 3 straight years in basketball and his football numbers are declining every year as well. He has math models, he handicaps, he has amazing write ups, but it almost seems like a guarantee that he's going down hard this season based on the trends. No douchebag "then fade him" shit ty. The market has caught up to Bob's 20 year old methods. Bob is mainly a regressor (uses regression models). Firstly, when most folks get into the tech side, the first thing they use is a regression model. Secondly, folks seeing Bob's success have tried to "reverse engineer" Bob's methods. They have been largely successful and the market has absorbed that information resulting in a tougher market for Bob to post winning selections. Between the two, the markets are better and harder to beat.

Unless Bob changes his methods, he will stay a 50% handicapper as he has been in the last 3-4 years.

It must be said that the lines became sharper by incorporating some of the angles he exploited in the past. As the time goes by, less and less of his angles remain undiscovered resulting in a lesser number of lines that are off, which, in turn, results in lesser and lesser plays he would make. Notice how his number of plays goes down year after year.

Please tell me what is a regression model. I can't find much info on it.

I never heard this one but it is right on.

Sometimes what you "know" that isn't true (or isn't true anymore) will hurt you more than what you don't know. If you don't know something, you can always endeavor to find out. However, if you accept something as true when it isn't, you will continue to make the same mistake(s).

Regardless of Dr. Bob's performance, no one can move college football lines mid-week like him.

True statement. His clout has diminished somewhat, but he is still a market force.

THIS is what has changed in recent years. Back in the glory days, his games would occasionally bounce back to original line on game day, while the rest of his plays lost line value for good.

Books are now beating him at his own game, as the lines are much closer to his models.

Handicappers, teams and individuals can all have good seasons.
and a lot of people can have a few good seasons.

the difference in ELITE and GOOD is consistently being the best.. This takes a lot of flexibility and effort.

When people have success, they attain a whole new level of complacency, and satisfaction. Dr. Bob sells picks, he doesn't pick winners. He had a few great seasons, so did Brandon Lang. Dr. Bob has no more room and I am afraid want to grow, or improve. He has a name, He has clients. He won them some money. If your goal is to EARN MONEY from Handicapping, remember whatever you pay the professional handicapper is an expense, and that handicappers will rarely beat the market consistently on a year to year basis.. The way football teams, even good football teams don't go to the playoffs ever year.

To get the best out of this site and any handicapping service, realize the nature of the beast. Handicappers, teams and individuals have great SEASONS, and a relative few have great CAREERS. The thing about this is that the season they are having is the season they are having. Rare is a season that starts out great and falls flat. Best course of action, find someone who is terrible, who is selling picks that consistently lose and is really abusing their clients and bet against them. Mr. F and Jim Feist were two last year, who did a dis service to their paying customers, and helped me afford some nicer Christmas gifts.

NO. Even the worst of the worst do not lose often enough for one to overcome the vig. How many times do we have to have this discussion?

If a bad handicapper has enough lemmings to move the line, fading can be a profitable strategy. I've faded Morrison's lemmings plenty of times in the past.
