Commentators say he slow rolled with the aces, plus he acted like a little bit of a dick after he got the call. So maybe karma doing it's work?

Glad I don’t play poker anymore. One of the bigger wastes of time in my life.

Tend to agree. However, I liked it on SBR. Chance to win a little cash w/o any risk.

    As for real-life poker:
    1) Online is akin to playing vs a bot. RTA everywhere, and worse.
    2) The rake is continually eroding the pot.
    3) As poker evolved, how does one really gain a significant edge?
    4) If there is a fish at the table, his $$ will be gone soon. And he surely has only one bullet to play.
    5) How many guys would say "Poker is easy"? As if it's just plucking Dollar Bills off a tree. Same guy would be the guy who says he ran into an endless string of bad beats.

sbr was fine because it was camaraderie. It’s a difficult game. Can not be very rewarding at times. Not really a healthy lifestyle even if you’re a winning player. But ultimately if you’re smart enough to win at poker, you’re smart enough to succeed greater at something else. I wish I had been doing that something else.

that said when im retired ill probably play again one day. Be one of those old nits at the table who drive the good younger players crazy.

Dane, your comments are spot-on. Except for blowing some $$ during a vacation trip, who wants to be a Net loser at a game? That gets old very quickly.

My buddy was one of the top Video Poker players b4 they changed the payout schedule. He would cross paths with an older gentleman on the bank of machines. They got to talking, it was very similar to your 2nd paragraph.

When one gets older and approaches retirement age, they have to ponder their options. How to pay your monthly nut (expenses) and live comfortably and hopefully enjoy yourself (at a slower pace). Anyway, the older guy learned VP strategy and was turning a profit (albeit at a slow pace).

You think about the possibilities where one could gamble and feel like they're likely to turn a profit. The options:
*Video Poker. I think the options are eroding.
*Blackjack. I still think it's possible. Older guys and any woman are normally not viewed as sharp. Sorry, that's the truth, that's the way it is.
*Live poker. Maybe but the rake is a monster. Limit games? No-Limit? Tournaments?

My two cents on trying to beat the MODERN poker game. Of course, it's nice to feel like you have a skill edge. Taking it to at least the second level, you have to be able to READ your opponent. The best player will feel like they're (almost) playing the game face up:
    *Don't bluff a donkey. They're not folding.
*Value bet the hell out of a donkey, if you feel like they CAN'T fold.
*Folding on the river when you feel like you're beaten. Unless you can put your opponent on a busted draw, there's no sense in calling River with a modest holding. Poker pros HATE to pay off on river.

Playing in a micro O8 turbo tourney earlier because I love O8, I just love to play hi/lo , stakes aren't much of a factor, plus I prefer the eight minute levels

Any-hoo, my screen name is 2jackscz.
It has nothing do with a pair of Jacks in poker, it's because I had a pair of Jack Russell Terriers at home, they were named Cooper and Zippy, thus the screen name 2jackscz
    Cooper
    Zippy

Thought I'd share this hand I had earlier
Pretty much your basic dream flop

Opti, I still can't believe he did that. All of us would have just calmly called and flipped over our cards and then go to our friends on the rail to spectate. He raised his arms in the air like he was Alexander the Great coming back home after winning a war, lol.

Awesome screen name and story about your dogs and an awesome flop as well! PLO8 is a great game. No Limit Omaha Hi-Lo tournaments have been gaining traction lately online which is nice to see as those are also really fun to play.

I personally love competing against other people and challenging myself. Our brain vs. their brain, our strategy vs. their strategy. I also really enjoy representing the USA in all international tournaments counted by hendon mob. All of it, the competition, the strategy, it's just really fun to me and I enjoy it so much. I understand your views though, Chucky. I will always still have a lot to learn and am learning new things everyday, and the more we think we know, the more we realize that we don't know anything, lol. So I relish gaining knowledge from older and younger posters on here and reading their perspective on things. That's why I made this thread.

I know that you have a passion for poker and enjoy playing currently or have enjoyed playing in the past. We can always play on and off and use poker as a means of enjoyment in our lives. If it ever becomes to the point where we don't enjoy it anymore or want to take a break, then we can always just stop playing.

One day, if we are both in Vegas, maybe we can play the WSOP $1000 tag team event and be partners and see how far we can go : )

If Dock Ellis can pitch a no-hitter on LSD, surely we can win a bracelet right? : D

I understand your views and respect them. I would hope that one day you can still find enjoyment in playing because it's a wonderful game and it doesn't need to be a net negative in your life. Just use the game to have fun. My parents retired and moved to Las Vegas in the early 2000's so I have tons of poker player friends in their 60', 70's, and 80's from the times that I've been there over the years visiting them and I would play $4-$8 limit Hold'em in Summerlin at places like Suncoast and Red Rock casino while my parents played bingo. And what I learned is that you don't need to be some flashy, up and coming pro to enjoy poker and win money. You can play nitty or loose or however you want. Even just playing limit Hold'em can be very enjoyable being able to see flops, turns, and rivers, and chase progressive bad beat jackpots and hit high hand jackpots and rack up player points while mingling and having laughs with the cool local retirees and tourists alike while having some beers. And you can also follow your sports bets on the tv's around you and also make bets on your phone while playing poker. It's so much fun, I love the action, lol. But yeah, when I'm playing limit Hold'em I also just play tight and set mine with pairs or if it's a family pot I'll play suited connectors to try to flop a straight or hit some special straight flush high hand that they give a cash bonus if you hit it. I'm going to Vegas in September to visit my parents so I'll be there in a couple months splashing around again at those limit games while my parents play bingo, lol.

Full respect, Josh. I line up to Dane's comments. Think I'm of his mindset.

First off, Poker needs to address the Cheating scandals. I'd argue that they've been WAY too loose with this up to now. Multi-accounting online games is terrible, how does one even consider playing Online nowadays?

Was Kabrael marking cards? If he was in question, what scrutiny did the Poker staff go thru? Frankly, I'm not sure they even bothered.

If you play these tournaments, what sort of ROI do you think you could turn, Josh? I think it's very hard to beat the rake.

And I line up to Dane's view on Poker being a terrible choice for health. The game is way too slow. And being sedentary for that long is no good.

Yeah, when Martin was pressing down on the cards with his fingernails, that was absurd, lol. I have never seen anyone handle cards like that before.

When he stood up and looked down at his opponents cards for a while, I really wish someone would have said: "get a good look, Costanza?"

I just checked, the micro millions series is running again on stars. They will have a $500k guaranteed prize pool $22 main event progressive bounty tournament. That will be a wild, wild tournament... there will be so many runners, haha! Awesome value for a small buy-in. I'll definitely be checking that out.

Josh, props to you. I think you started the best Poker thread on this site I've seen in years.

I think there's one basic change I've seen in deep-stack games. It's how players play speculative hands.

Doug Polk was one of the first players that played these hands creatively. Think 86(suited). In late position, this hand is normally NOT a calling hand (pre-flop). If you don't call, it's a Raise or Fold hand. In Polk's case, he would sometimes Raise.

It's speculative in the sense that it CAN produce a big hand. The flip side is that can produce garbage that might be 8-hi on the river.

If Polk had ANYTHING on the flop, he'd bet. By anything, I mean a Pair, a gutshot, or at least 3 up/down.

On the Turn, he'd bet if he has a Four-Flush or Four-To-Straight or better. On River, he might bet AGAIN unless he thinks the board smashes YOUR range.

I see SO MANY of these Rivers where it's missed Draw versus modest holding. If you go back 15 years in Poker, you didn't see it so often. Now, you see it a lot.

I mentioned that to be a GREAT player nowadays, it's almost like you have to see thru the back of cards. Like Garrett Adelstein, NOT like Mike Postle.

I mentioned that great players HATE to pay off on river. Could YOU lay down Daniel's hand at 15:00? He literally KNEW he was beat.

Interesting hand, I think the mistake that lady made is that the blinds are not that high in the early rounds to be 3-betting with QQ there. I would rather have more self-awareness in that spot and be more deceptive and tricky and just call considering the fact that most players, whether fair or not, would judge her playing style and image to be on the tighter side and having a very strong range. This is the $10,000 buy-in WSOP main event after all, not some $60 daily tournament. By her 3-betting there, it just telegraphs that she has a big hand and limits how much she can possibly win considering how most players' radars would be going off (alert! big pocket pair! alert!), haha, let alone a pro like Negreanu.

I like her bet on the flop, 1800. Around 31% pot. That was a good play. It handcuffs Negreanu in a way where even if he were to raise to 7500, she can comfortably call and not be priced out if raised and can evaluate things after the turn card.

Negreanu makes his flush on the turn and leads out around 44% of the pot. Not sure how I feel about both of their plays. Normally, Negreanu probably should have checked looking to check-raise and the lady probably should have raised Negreanu's bet of 4200. This is where the 3-bet pre-flop costs the lady a little bit more chips potentially because Negreanu knows that she is not capable of 3-betting with a speculative hand like A9 offsuit with the ace of spades for a pair of 9's and drawing to the nut flush draw on the river. So he is playing exploitative poker considering his opponent. When she calls his 4200 bet, sirens should be going off in his head, lol.

On the river, this is where I feel like Negreanu makes his first mistake. Her calling the 4200 turn lead is so freakin' strong that he should either be checking there or putting out a block bet of 3000 into 17,800, around 16.85% the pot. Instead of 42.13% of the pot in 7500. It was a nice read by him though to fold there after she re-popped it.

As for your question whether or not I would have folded personally. Trying to be as objective as possible, she would have looked very strong with the way she played that hand so I would have been very wary. I would have definitely played more defensively against her. I would not have led there on the turn. I probably would have played it in a way to keep the pot small so that I could comfortably call the river because she would not have been able to size that big on the river since I would have probably checked-called the turn and checked the river.

But again, apples to oranges. Everyone has their own style. That was an interesting hand, thanks for sharing.

Josh, poker is a game that's much better in practice than theory. You have to earn your stripes on the battlefield.

How nice would it be for SBR to bring back Poker? Even if it's just a Sunday afternoon tournament during Football.

Imagine kicking off at 1pm. Tables are filled and cards in the air at 1:03pm.

If you don't enjoy poker then there's no reason to play, but imo we're entering into a mini boom period. The cardrooms where I play are thriving.

There are more profitable jobs than poker for sure, but if you love the game and can grind out a good profit then imo it's worth it.

Oh yeah, that would be fantastic. Those SBR poker tournaments were fun. The software was pretty decent, I liked it. The last tournament I played, I ran 66's into 77's, haha! That was ages ago. There were extremely funny and entertaining people in the forums who would give tournament recaps, hand histories, talk smack, etc, lol. That stuff was great man.

    Josh:

I'm coming to appreciate how good Negreanu is. His hand-reading is incredibly good. He doesn't pay off...and he picks off bluffs.

Daniel was struggling some years ago. Younger players were causing him problems. He went back to the drawing board, he re-sharpened his skills.

Critics were telling Phil a few years ago that the game has passed him by.

Oh it was fun, I certainly had some good times. It's just not a lifestyle I want to live anymore. There's a place for it for me recreationally. I'd be okay going to the local poker room or where ever, take a shot on some tournaments. But the days of me trying to grind out cash games for some extra income are over.

Poker players are sitting for long periods of time and/or staring at computer screens. They also are tempted to drink and eat like shit. Many smoke because their nerves are shot. Sleeping patterns are of. It's just a tough lifestyle on your health. There are some poker players conscious of this and take care of their health. Go out of their way to decompress and work out. They are outliers though. I always tried to advocate exercise when I was playing. Many poker players look like they're on deaths doorstep.

I think you've been playing professionally or semi-professionally for a while. I remember a thread a while back where you posted goals like getting health insurance. Don't ask me how the fukk I remember that. You've always been someone on here who had it well thought out and obviously loved playing. I don't want to make it out like saying someone can't make it playing poker or shouldn't if they love the game, but it's not for me. Even if I can grind out a profit, and I probably still could, I'd rather spend that time on other things. I'm not getting that time back. I wish I had seen that sooner.

There are a lot of things in life I wish I had realized sooner too... living in the present is all we can do. Enjoy the time you have that you used to spend on poker. GL!

    Down to three.

    https://www.pokernews.com/news/2023/...view-44138.htm

Did you see that sick three way all in prior to the final table?

    KK v. QQ v. JJ

Weinman shoves all in with JJ , and is called by QQ and KK
Weinman spikes the Jack on the river and holds up.

I'm rooting for Winman but he has no business being at the final table.

Weinman is an excellent player. But it's also nice to luckbox it. Your IQ goes up 20 pts in those spots.

Actually Weinman hit his set on the floP, if my short term memory severs correctly.

He's passive aggressive, I love that style of play.

    On the TURN, old man.

Guy is living right. Weinman also hit JJ set-over-set vs 88 very late in this tournament.
