NFL Player News - Week of 4/20/20

Buccaneers | TB not in on Leonard Fournette
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette is not expected to draw interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the trade market.

Buccaneers | Jacob Eason a fit in Tampa Bay?
Washington QB Jacob Eason is a 'perfect' fit for Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians' offense, according to an AFC personnel executive. 'He wouldn't have to move,' the executive said. 'He could sit in the pocket and throw downfield. They could develop him for a few years behind [Tom] Brady.'
Footballguys view: Eason only has two years of starting in college football, one at Georgia and one at Washington. He's got a strong arm and can pepper passes downfield with a clean pocket. However, pressure really gets to him more than most. Eason is rattled easily and that's going to be difficult to shake at the pro level. Expect him to be a mid-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

    Vikings | Minnesota trading down?
The Minnesota Vikings are poised to trade down in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft to select a corner, according to multiple league executives, because of the gap between Ohio State CB Jeff Okudah and Florida CB CJ Henderson and the rest of the prospects at the position.

Eagles | Philly in receiver market?
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz needs to have more weapons added through the 2020 NFL Draft, according to an AFC personnel executive. 'I've got to think they will make it happen with a trade or straight up,' the executive said.
Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Eagles are in line for a receiver in the first round and may move up to secure one of the top players in this draft class. They currently have the No.21 overall pick but could trade up with a team like Denver at No.15 so they could land a better talent.

Jaguars | Jacksonville to add QB depth
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew will be joined on the roster by at least one more quarterback in the coming, according to general manager David Caldwell. 'We'll get through the draft and see what comes out of the draft,' Caldwell said. 'If one presents itself, we'll pull the trigger. If not, we'll look to see what's on the street.'
Footballguys view: We could see the team add a quarterback through the draft, although many are speculating they could still add a guy like Cam Newton or Jameis Winston in free agency. Minshew is the starter for now, but he should have competition for the job in training camp.

Dolphins | Miami checking out kickers
Georgia PK Rodrigo Blankenship and Utah State PK Dominic Eberle have both been interviewed by the Miami Dolphins in recent weeks.

Seahawks | David Moore signs tender
Seattle Seahawks WR David Moore officially signed his restricted free agent tender Sunday, April 19.

NFL | James Morgan generating a ton of interest
Florida international QB James Morgan has taken part in videoconferences with 'almost half of the league's teams, including multiple calls with teams where he chatted with head coaches and offensive coordinators,' according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline. Morgan told Pauline after the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine that the New York Jets and New England Patriots showed the most interest, while Pauline added the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 'also in the mix.'
Footballguys view: Morgan is a late-round pick with intriguing upside due to his intelligence and physical skill set. He's got a big arm and enough athleticism to keep a play alive. However, Morgan has 'say it don't spray it' accuracy and his decision making leaves a lot to be desired. He'll have to work as a backup to become more nuanced as a passer at the pro level.
    Link to story

NFL | More teams eyeing Chase Claypool as a TE
Notre Dame WR Chase Claypool is reportedly being graded as a tight end by 'several teams,' according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline, who adds there are also 'several teams' who have him listed as the top tight end prospect available.
Footballguys view: It's not a great tight end class. Claypool needs to be a better route runner if he's going to stay at wide receiver in the pros. Claypool had a standout performance at the Scouting Combine earlier this year with his size/speed ratio. If he does convert to tight end, Claypool could be a Darren Waller-like move tight end for his pro team.
    Link to story

NFL | Denzel Mims getting overlooked?
Baylor WR Denzel Mims 'could be selected much earlier than most expect' in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline.
Footballguys view: Mims is a top-tier talent in this amazing wide receiver class. He's got speed to go with tremendous body control and 'my ball' mentality. Mims is likely to be a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and could make an instant impact at the pro level.
    Link to story

Seahawks | Seattle contemplating Leonard Fournette?
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette is reportedly on the trade block, and the Tacoma News Tribune's Gregg Bell expects the Seattle Seahawks to be among the teams looking into acquiring his services.
Footballguys view: The Seahawks could certainly use a talent like Fournette. They do have Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny in the backfield already but those two have both had issues staying healthy in a featured role. Fournette has had issues with injury during his NFL career, but he's coming off career-best numbers in 2019 when he gashed defenses for 1,152 rushing yards and a whopping 76 catches for 522 yards.
    Link to story

Broncos | Denver could make play for Jerry Jeudy
Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy is expected to come off the board in the first half of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and sources tell the Colorado Springs Gazette's Woody Paige that it is very possible the Denver Broncos move up from the 15th pick in the draft and into the top 10 to select him.
Footballguys view: Jeudy is considered the top wide receiver in this draft class for good reason. He's a great route runner and has drawn comparisons to Amari Cooper when he came out of college. The Broncos have a rising star in Courtland Sutton but they need someone to start on the opposite side of him.
    Link to story

Eagles | Philly interested in Denzel Mims
Baylor WR Denzel Mims said the Philadelphia Eagles have shown a lot of interest in him leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: Mims is likely to go in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. He's got plenty of speed and can attack a defense vertically. Mims also has good body control and fights for the ball in the air. There's a chance he's still on the board when the Eagles pick at No.21 overall.
    Link to story

Jets | CeeDee Lamb could be option
Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb could be an option for the New York Jets in the first-round of the 2020 NFL Draft, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.
Footballguys view: The Jets have the No.11 overall pick and they could start the run on wide receivers. This is the greatest WR class in NFL history, but zero may go in the top 10 as teams there have different and greater needs. The Jets may be able to get the wide receiver of their choice and Lamb would be a great fit.
    Link to story

Browns | Odell Beckham not being shopped
Cleveland Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. has not been involved in any trade talks this offseason, according to a source.
Footballguys view: This has been reiterated by Schefter more than a few times. People need to start believing the man! Yes, Beckham makes for an interesting headline but the reality is that he's going to stay put in Cleveland for now. If/When that changes, Schefter will let us know.

    Tuesday Update

Saints | New Orleans intrigued by Jalen Reagor
Texas Christian University WR Jalen Reagor is a pass-catcher the New Orleans Saints like and would consider with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline.

49ers | Tevin Coleman could be on the move
San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman is a possibility to be traded or released in the coming weeks, according to SI.com's Albert Breer.
    Link to story

Dolphins | Justin Herbert unlikely to land in Miami?
Oregon QB Justin Herbert is 'not in the team's plans with the fifth overall pick' in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline via a source close to team owner Stephen Ross. The same source told Pauline he believes Miami is either setting its sights on Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa or a position player at No. 5 with a 'later maneuver' for Utah State QB Jordan Love.
    Link to story

Seahawks | First-round trade for Seattle?
Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider traded the team's initial first-round pick in every draft from 2012 to 2019, suggesting it could be in play once again. Seattle currently picks 27th overall.
    Link to story

Jets | Several QB prospects meet with Gang Green
Princeton QB Kevin Davidson, Iowa QB Nate Stanley, Virginia QB Bryce Perkins and Michigan QB Shea Patterson recently met with the New York Jets via video conferencing. The Jets also met with Florida International QB James Morgan, as previously reported, which helps establish a pattern of interest in the position.
    Link to story

Bears | Ramiz Ahmed officially inked by Chicago
Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears PK Ramiz Ahmed's contract was finalized Monday, April 20, by the NFL.
    Link to story

Dolphins | Two RB prospects considered by Miami
Maryland RB Anthony McFarland and Cincinnati RB Michael Warren II have been in contact with the Miami Dolphins leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft.
    Link to story

Raiders | GM likes CeeDee Lamb
Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb is considered the most complete receiver in the 2020 NFL Draft by Las Vegas Raiders general manager Mike Mayock.
Footballguys view: The Raiders are very likely to select a wide receiver in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Jerry Jeudy (Alabama) is considered the top wide receiver in this historic draft class, but he may go off the board before the Raiders select at No.12 overall. Lamb reminds many in the scouting community of DeAndre Hopkins and would be an instant starter for the Raiders.
    Link to story

Chargers | Coach has confidence in Tyrod Taylor
Los Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor is not considered a bridge quarterback by head coach Anthony Lynn, and Lynn believes Taylor can be a good NFL starting quarterback.
Footballguys view: Taylor has already been a starter in the league and he's solid in that role. He's safe with the ball, sometimes to a fault but Taylor is not going to steer things off track as the starter. Some think the Chargers will draft a quarterback like Justin Herbert (Oregon) in the first round, but they could wait until the second round to get someone like Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma).
    Link to story
    Tyrod Taylor player page

Jaguars | Marqise Lee let go
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee was released Monday, April 20, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Lee was a second-round pick out of USC back in 2014 and started off his career strongly with the Jaguars. A torn ACL caused him to miss the entire 2018 season and Lee just played in just six games last year. He's a seasoned veteran who might land as a depth acquisition somewhere when training camp starts.
    Link to story
    Marqise Lee player page

Cowboys | Dak Prescott recently talked with DAL
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott talked with the Cowboys about his contract situation within the last two weeks, and the talks were considered positive, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys are going to get something done with Prescott but it may not be until we get closer to the July 15th deadline to do so. Prescott was franchise tagged by the team but has not signed his tender. He's got all the leverage and will get a contract that makes him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league, perhaps even the No.1 spot...before Patrick Mahomes resets the market.
    Link to story
    Dak Prescott player page

49ers | Jeff Wilson signs tender
San Francisco 49ers exclusive rights free-agent RB Jeff Wilson Jr. signed his one-year tender offer Monday, April 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Wilson could either sign his tender or choose not to play football as ERFAs don't have many choices. He's a talented reserve runner but the 49ers backfield is one of the most packed rooms in all of football. Wilson will be hard pressed to make the 53-man roster.
    Link to story

Seahawks | Jacob Hollister signs tender
Seattle Seahawks restricted free-agent TE Jacob Hollister signed his one-year tender offer Sunday, April 19. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The Seahawks put a second-round tender on Hollister which kept teams away from signing him. The tender gives him a one-year deal worth around $3.5 million for the 2020 season. Hollister will compete for a spot on the depth chart, likely behind Greg Olsen and Will Dissly.
    Link to story
    Jacob Hollister player page

Saints | Taysom Hill to participate in activities
New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent QB Taysom Hill does not plan on signing his one-year tender at this point but will participate in the virtual offseason program, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The first-round tender on Hill is worth around $4.6 million for this season. He's going to continue as a backup to Drew Brees and jack-of-all-trades football player who can pass, catch and run with the ball.
    Link to story
    Taysom Hill player page

Giants | NYG checking on Justin Herbert
Oregon QB Justin Herbert has had FaceTime conversations with the New York Giants, who have done a lot of research on him.
Footballguys view: That's....odd, considering the fact that the Giants selected QB Daniel Jones last year in the top 10 and he flashed as a rookie. This is likely so that a team behind them (cough, Dolphins, cough) gets tempted to move up. We'd be shocked if the Giants actually selected Herbert in the 2020 NFL draft.

    Wednesday Update

Colts | Indy chatting with James Morgan
Florida International QB James Morgan has participated in multiple video meetings with the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN's Mike Wells, who adds the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are among the other teams high on Morgan.

NFL | Michael Pittman Jr. has sure hands
USC WR Michael Pittman Jr. was credited with only five drops on 176 catchable targets in his college career, according to Pro Football Focus.

Vikings | Minnesota fielding trade calls for first-round picks
Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said Tuesday, April 21, he is entertaining trade offers ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. Minnesota possesses the No. 22 and No. 25 overall selections in Round 1. 'I've had calls already, opportunities of people trying to trade up, and I've also had teams that are in front of us that wanted to trade back,' general manager Rick Spielman said on Tuesday. 'I think it all depends how the draft board unfolds on Thursday. For example, I would say if we stay at 22, and we have maybe seven or eight names still up there, to move back from 25 to gain another pick and still get the same quality of player. An example: Last year, we moved back three times in the third round and still had Mattison targeted and were able to still get him. A lot of that manipulation on the draft board depends on what's up there, how you have the draft board stacked and how far are you willing to go back without risk of losing a particular player.'
Footballguys view: We'll see what the Vikings do in the first round. They have the firepower to move up if they need to. They can stay put and make two picks, likely quality players who could start from day one. It all depends on their plan and who is rising ...and falling... in the opening round.

Buccaneers | Rob Gronkowski passes physical, trade complete
Updating an ongoing story, Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Rob Gronkowski (Patriots) passed his physical Tuesday, April 21, and the trade is now complete, according to a source.
    Link to story

Ravens | Lamar Jackson to dial back running?
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson doesn't expect to contribute as much to the running game in 2020 or beyond. 'I doubt if I'm going to be carrying the ball a lot going on in the future,' Jackson said. 'We've got dynamic running backs. We're going to have even more receivers. We've got Hollywood (Marquise Brown), Mark Andrews, Nick (Boyle), Willie Snead, Miles (Boykin). We're going to be pretty good. I don't think I'll be running a lot.'
Footballguys view: This is a natural progression that Jackson must make. He can't be a scrambler forever or else his body will not hold up. They may plan on him running less, but we imagine Jackson will still do plenty with his legs. He's a QB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2020.
    Link to story
    Lamar Jackson player page

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard not close to being traded
Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard is not subject to a pending trade following the Bucs' acquisition of TE Rob Gronkowski Tuesday, April 21.
Footballguys view: The Bucs now have Gronkowski, Howard and Cameron Brate in the tight end room. That's a jam-packed group for now, but we imagine Howard will get dealt. There were rumblings about him already getting traded before Tampa added Gronkowski.
    Link to story
    O.J. Howard player page

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski dealt for mid-round pick
Updating a previous story, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick were traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday, April 21, in exchange for a fourth-round pick, according to a source. The trade is pending the results of a physical Gronkowski has already taken.
Footballguys view: Gronkowski wanted to come back and play football but only with Tom Brady. The Patriots didn't have any leverage here, but getting a fourth-round pick for the veteran is what they get and it's not terrible all things considered.
    Link to story
    Rob Gronkowski player page

Seahawks | Luke Wilson re-ups with 'Hawks
Free-agent TE Luke Willson (Seahawks) officially re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks Tuesday, April 21. The terms of the deal was not disclosed.
    Link to story
    Luke Willson player page

Vikings | Stefon Diggs' deal too good to pass up
Buffalo Bills WR Stefon Diggs wasn't shopped around in trade talks, according to Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman Tuesday, April 21, but he said the offer from the Bills was too good to turn down. 'We had no intention of trading Diggs at the combine. Great player for us,' said Spielman. Spielman said the deal was good for both the player and the team. The Vikings received a 2020 first-round pick, a 2020 fifth-round pick, a 2020 sixth-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick in exchange for Diggs and a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: The Vikings are going to be able to add a rookie wide receiver -- and a damn good one -- in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. This is the greatest WR draft class of all time and someone like Justin Jefferson (LSU) could fall to the Vikings. Whatever receiver they draft in the first round will take the spot of Diggs on the depth chart.
    Link to story
    Stefon Diggs player page

NFL | Tua Tagovailoa not at risk of re-injury?
Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) isn't a concern for further injury, according to Dr. Chip Routt, who performed surgery on his dislocated and fractured right hip. 'No, he is not susceptible to injury,' Routt said. 'We have a nice repair that should lower the chances of arthritic damage as he gets to be an old man. His injury had a pattern that allowed us to put the pieces back where they came from.'
Footballguys view: The injury concerns about Tagovailoa are there, but it may not cause him to drop in the 2020 NFL draft. We think the Dolphins are set to take him No.5 overall.
    Link to story

Rams | Josh Reynolds has confidence of management
Los Angeles Rams WR Josh Reynolds received a positive review from head coach Sean McVay Tuesday, April 21, when McVay called the recent trade of WR Brandin Cooks 'a big vote of confidence' for Reynolds. 'We just feel he's a capable starting receiver,' McVay said.
Footballguys view: Reynolds has flashed some talent during his pro career, but he doesn't have a 100-yard receiving game yet in the NFL. He'll get a chance to do more in the passing game this year, in addition to guys like TE Gerald Everett and TE Tyler Higbee getting more work.
    Link to story
    Josh Reynolds player page

Cowboys | Jerry Jones talks trading No. 17 pick
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday, April 21, the team is unlikely to trade the No. 17 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft for a veteran player after rumors surrounding New York Jets S Jamal Adams tied him to the Cowboys. A source told NFL Network's Jane Slater the safety 'just wasn't top of mind right now.'
Footballguys view: The worst kept secret in the league is the Cowboys interest in LSU EDGE player K'Lavon Chaisson. They need help rushing the passer and even though this isn't a great class for that, Chaisson projects to be a fine pro. We'll see if the Cowboys have to move up for him or if they can stay put and get their guy.
    Link to story

NFL | Pro coordinators talk Jalen Reagor
TCU WR Jalen Reagor could be a first-round draft choice, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. 'He's a really good player,' an NFC coordinator told Pelissero. 'He played with possibly one of the worst college football quarterbacks I've ever seen in my life. That makes his film pretty bad.' Another coordinator expressed similar sentiments, stating, 'The Reagor kid is interesting because his quarterback play was so atrocious. It's hard to put that on him. But he wasn't consistent, either. He's got return ability, too, so that's where he separates himself a little bit.'
Footballguys view: Reagor could end up going to a team like the Saints near the end of the first round. He's an explosive athlete who can make defenders look silly when catching passes. Reagor is also a good option as a return man at the pro level.
    Link to story

NFL | Cole Kmet drawing praise as draft nears
Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet (hamstring) could be a late first-round pick or an early second-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to one AFC coach. 'Big dude, can catch, knows how to use his body. He's probably one of the top inline Y's in the last couple years. Super smart. High character in every way,' the unnamed coach told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. 'He's not dynamic as a receiver. But he's a really big man that plays a physical style of football,' an unnamed NFC executive said. 'He wins contested catches. He's strong after the catch. He's not elusive, and neither really was Gronk. I'm not saying they're the same player, but the physicality with which Cole plays -- and granted, he hasn't played a lot of football, it's really this year and a little bit of last year -- I could see his play style being really intriguing to guys.'
Footballguys view: Kmet is arguably the best tight end in th is draft class. It's not a great class and Kmet is likely to be a second-round pick. He's an all-purpose 'Y' tight end who doesn't have any one part of his game that is eye popping. Kmet is instead solid and consistent as a prospect.
    Link to story

Bears | Adam Shaheen available for trade
Chicago Bears TE Adam Shaheen is available for trade leading up to the NFL draft.
Footballguys view: Shaheen has not worked out as planned with the Bears. A small-school prospect from Ashland has failed to stay healthy or impress in the NFL. He's still big and athletic, so some team out there might want a reclamation project.

Him and Brady well past their prime. It's like a senior citizen's convention for Tampa Bay.

I imagine quite a bit, the time off did him good and he's only 30, Arians will put him in good situations.

The Patriots got a 4th rounder for a guy who would have never played for them again anyway. Another smart deal by the Patriots.

I think Brady will tell Arians to put some more TE plays in the playbook. Bruce isnít known for much in that department

Sounds like they are keeping OJ Howard as of now too, so Bruce may go from hardly utilizing the TE to implementing 2-TE sets.

With Evans and Godwin, Brady really wont have an excuse and this will probably be his best receiving core since he had moss and company.

    Thursday Update

Colts | Trey Burton joining Colts
Free-agent TE Trey Burton (Bears) agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract with the Indianapolis Colts Wednesday, April 22, according to his agency.
Footballguys view: Burton is an excellent complement to Jack Doyle and the Colts love multi-tight end sets. They have basketball convert Mo Alie-Cox to take some snaps at tight end, but Burton immediately becomes the team's top move tight end, although there probably won't be enough opportunity for him to be fantasy relevant without an injury to Doyle.

Buccaneers | Rob Gronkowski officially joins Bucs
New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft were officially acquired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday, April 22, in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Gronkowski remains on the NFL's Reserve/Retired list.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster not going to Niners
Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster will not be traded to the San Francisco 49s, according to a well-placed source Wednesday, April 22. Smith-Schuster had previously been linked to the Niners in trade rumors.
Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster is still looking like a 2021 free agent as he will want a top of the market contract and the Steelers are unlikely to give that to him. The Steelers could even take a wide receiver at 49 to anticipate Smith-Schuster's departure next year.
    Link to story
    JuJu Smith-Schuster player page

NFL | Devin Asiasi has multiple suitors
UCLA TE Devin Asiasi has had recent video calls with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks, and is an option to go on Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: Asiasi is a late bloomer and has as high a ceiling as any tight end in this draft. He could easily end up being the best fantasy tight end of the class.
    Link to story

Buccaneers | Rob Gronkowski near playing weight
Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Rob Gronkowski told reporters Wednesday, April 22, he's currently 250 pounds and hasn't lost as much weight as people think.
Footballguys view: Gronkowski should be ready to go when teams get back together later this year and has plenty of time to bulk back up for his return to the NFL. He'll be ranked in the 6-12 range with mid-low TE1 upside.
    Link to story
    Rob Gronkowski player page

Patriots | O.J. Howard still on table for Pats
Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard remains 'a distinct possibility' to end up with the New England Patriots, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports Wednesday, April 22.
    Link to story
    O.J. Howard player page

Colts | Marcus Johnson returning to Indianapolis
Free-agent WR Marcus Johnson (Colts) re-signed with the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year deal Wednesday, April 22, according to a league source. Johnson previously didn't receive a restricted free-agent tender. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
    Link to story

NFL | Henry Ruggs talks about interested teams
Alabama WR Henry Ruggs III told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Monday, April 20, he has heard the most from the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Las Vegas Raiders.
    Link to story

Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa checks out for MIA
Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) received a passing grade on his physical by the Miami Dolphins.
    Link to story

Buccaneers | O.J. Howard won't be fleeced away
Updating previous reports, Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE O.J. Howard won't be traded unless the team is blown away with an offer. The Buccaneers say they're comfortable lining him up in sets with two tight ends.
Footballguys view: Howard has underachieved in his first three years under two different coaches, but this is a weak draft for tight ends and the Ravens got a second for Hayden Hurst, so perhaps the Bucs could get a second-day pick for Howard, or send him to Washington in a trade for Trent Williams. Cameron Brate could also be dealt during the draft to help clear the depth chart for Rob Gronkowski.
    Link to story
    O.J. Howard player page

NFL | Percy Harvin wants to return
Former WR Percy Harvin (Bills) said he's ready to return to the NFL after he retired in 2016 due to severe migraines. He said he has been training with a former Olympian and is better mentally. He weighs 185 pounds.
Footballguys view: Harvin will turn 32 next month, so he's still in the viable window of playing age for wide receivers. He should get at least a tryout and chance to make a 90 man roster, with upside to make a 53 if he gets his foot in the door.

    Friday Update

    FIRST ROUND WINNERS AND LOSERS

A look at the biggest winners and losers in the 2020 draft first round
    by Sigmund Bloom, - Footballguys.com

It was a chalky first round for a while, but the second half brought enough twists and turns to keep both our fantasy and NFL brains busy with puzzles and open-ended questions for weeks or months to come. Rookie drafts and the destinies of many NFL franchises changed before our very eyes. Who were the biggest winners and losers of day one?

    WINNERS

AJ Green, Tyler Boyd, John Ross, WR, Joe Mixon, RB, CIN, Bengals Fanbase
    - All three get a potential upgrade in fantasy ceiling, assuming #1 pick Joe Burrow (LSU) is pro-ready and Zac Taylor and Brian Callahan can implement an offense closer to the Rams unstoppable 2018 unit that Taylor helped coach. The fanbase gets their franchise-altering quarterback, as the Bayou Bengal returns to his home state and becomes a Cincinnati Bengal in a poetic twist and continuation of a fairy tale storyline from the 2019 college football season.

Miami Dolphins, Devante Parker, Preston Williams, WR, Mike Gesicki, TE, MIA
    - Austin Jackson (LSU) was a risky boom/bust pick at tackle at 18 and a third corner in Noah Igbinoghene (Auburn) isnít that exciting at 30 and getting an extra fourth round pick this year in a trade down is a questionable move with not enough roster spots to keep all of your 14 draft picks going into the night, but none of that matters because the Dolphins got their quarterback without tanking or trading up. Tua Tagovailoa should keep Miami in the upper half of NFL pass offenses, and they can give him a redshirt year with Ryan Fitzpatrick minding the shop.

    Sam Darnold
, QB, NYJ, Tom Brady, QB, TB, Daniel Jones, QB, NYG, Baker Mayfield, QB, CLE
    - The left tackles started going off of the board early, but the top four lasted until the 13th pick, longer than expected. The Giants kicked things off taking high floor Andrew Thomas (Georgia) at 4, and the Browns surprisingly took the second one, another high floor pick Jedrick Wills (Alabama). The Jets werenít assured of getting one of the top four, but high ceiling pick Mekhi Becton fell into their laps, and then the Bucs gave up their other fourth round pick (after trading one for Rob Gronkowski earlier in the week) to move up one pick for Tristan Wirfs (Iowa), hyperathletic, but still a little rough around the edges. Brady is the bigger winner with the problem right tackle spot addressed, but Darnoldís upgrade from George Fant on the left side and Mayfield and Jones getting solid players to bookend the line with established veterans are all gains.

    Teddy Bridgewater
    , QB, CAR
    - We didnít have to wonder if the Panthers would take a quarterback when Justin Herbert (Oregon) went #6 to the Chargers. Maybe Carolina would have considered Herbert or Tagovailoa, but they were strongly linked to defensive tackle Derrick Brown (Auburn) throughout the draft process. Bridgewater will get a chance to pilot an offense designed by Joe Brady whose system helped vault Joe Burrow to being the #1 pick. Bridgewater also has three good receivers and he gained a strong left tackle in Russell Okung earlier in the offseason. Even if the Panthers would have taken a quarterback at 7, Bridgewater gets a whole season to prove himself before they have to make the decision again.

    Gardner Minshew
    , QB, JAX
    - Like Bridgewater, Minshew gets to exhale knowing that he wonít be sharing the roster with a first round quarterback. New offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has elevated quarterback play in the past, so Minshew could establish himself with improvement, although the Jaguars will easily be considered the top ďTank for TrevorĒ candidate.

    Baltimore Ravens
    - How do they do it every year? Somehow a team trades up for Kenneth Murray (Oklahoma) and Jordyn Brooks (Texas Tech) inexplicably goes one spot ahead of them, leaving Patrick Queen (LSU) there for the taking. Queen is an instant three-down starter at one of their weakest spots in the starting lineup and he should be a massive hit in IDP leagues, worth a pick in the first round of rookie drafts in some scoring systems. Queen couldnít have landed in a better spot to see his career take off like a rocketship.

    Drew Lock
    , QB, DEN, John Elway
    - The Raiders listened to the ghost of Al Davis and took speed (4.27 40 Henry Ruggs III III Alabama) when the draft gods smiled on them by giving them the pick of one of the best wide receiver classes in draft history. San Francisco traded down one pick, but they needed a wide receiver and still stood between Denver and their likely wide receiver pick. The 49ers took Jerry Jeudy, a precise route runner who is an ideal partner for Courtland Sutton and reliable third-down target for Drew Lock. Elway has two extra third round picks tomorrow and already looks like a genius for showing up and exercising a pick that any casual college football fan could have made with much thought. The Raiders and Chargers had two of the more dubious first rounds to help Elway and the Broncos in the division power rankings to boot.

    Clyde Edwards-Helaire
    , RB, KC
    - Edwards-Helaire is in a perfect offense for an advanced pass catching running back. No rookie gained more value in round 1, and Edwards-Helaire should leapfrog at least 3-4 running backs after being RB5 in the consensus rookie rankings before the draft. Youíll need to use a top 3 pick to take him now.

    Dak Prescott
    , QB, DAL, Dallas Cowboys
    - The Cowboys got a lot of smart peoplesí #1 receiver in Ceedee Lamb (Oklahoma) and at #17. Prescott has an embarrassment of riches at wideout. Heís primed to lead an offense that will be difficult to defend, although the team does have some questions at center after Travis Frederick retired. They decided to wisely go best player available over Cesar Ruiz (Michigan) the top-rated center who later went to Saints at the 24th pick in a very smart pick to reinforce the offensive line and help the successor of Drew Brees while giving the team injury-proof depth at guard and center. I wonít list Michael Gallup as a loser as his arrow is still pointing way up and this pass offense should be very efficient. Iíll happily sit on him for two up and down years with Dallas because of their depth at receiver to watch where he lands on his second deal in 2022.

    Jalen Reagor
    , WR, PHI
    - Reagorís inconsistency bothers me and his game has holes. I still canít deny that heíll have a ton of opportunity in Philadelphia and heís a better pick than JJ Arcega-Whiteside. Heíll probably go earlier than I would take him in my rookie drafts, but heís moving up my rankings significantly.

    Rick Spielman
    - Minnesotaís general manager had an outstanding night, getting a very good fit at wide receiver in Justin Jefferson (LSU) to replace Stefon Diggs with the pick that was the main piece in the trade of Diggs, and trading down with San Francisco to get an extra fourth and fifth round and still getting Jeff Gladney (TCU) a hard-nosed corner who should be able to start right away.

    Arizona Cardinals
    - After getting significantly better by trading for DeAndre Hopkins earlier in the offseason, they get a player in Isaiah Simmons at #8 who can help them match up better against their varied offensive opponents in the NFC West. Simmons was one of the true marquee players in this class. Now itís up to Vance Joseph to get the most out of his slot corner/edge rusher/linebacker/safety skillset combined with elite athleticism.

    LOSERS

    Cam Newton
, Andy Dalton, Jameis Winston, QB, FA
    - Three the four most unsettled quarterback situations were filled with high first round rookie picks, leaving only New England as a possible landing spot for this once entrenched starting quarterbacks.

Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers, QB
    - Rodgers is signed for four more years, and at reasonable prices in 2020 quarterback terms. Either thereís something we donít know about Rodgers relationship with the brass or the Packers think Love is a franchise quarterback. Either way, itís reasonable for Rodgers to seek a trade in the future. Itís eerie to see history repeat itself, but the symmetry is beautiful. Rodgers had to wait three years before getting his shot, so if the parallel storylines continue, Rodgers will start for a division rival (the Bears?) in 2023 and Love will take over. If Love doesnít start before the end of his rookie deal, this is an absurdly terrible pick for a team that went to the NFC Championship last year. The Packers gave us the rush of adrenaline we were waiting for all night. The plate tectonics were in motion when the Packers moved up to take Love.

    Seattle
    - Seahawks are gonna Seahawks during the draft. Theyíll probably make one of two picks between now and the end of the draft to redeem it, but taking a probable two-down linebacker in the first round of the year 2020 is decidedly backward-looking. The 49ers are a good run team, but the Seahawks are solid at linebacker right now and Jordyn Brooks (Texas Tech) ability to affect the gameís outcome is limited in a passing league.

    Las Vegas Raiders
    - We knew they were likely to take a wide receiver and a cornerback. If you had told me that they would get their pick of the wide receivers, I would not have expected Henry Ruggs III III because their quarterbacks arenít exactly aggressive downfield passers. Ruggs feels like a pick that will be difficult for the Raiders to get full value out of unless they find a new quarterback soon. Damon Arnette (Ohio State) was a second day cornerback on almost every media board, so they could have likely gotten him later and filled a hole left in their draft pick allotment until pick 80 by trading down like the Patriots did.

    Tyrod Taylor
, QB, LAC, Los Angeles Chargers
    - So much for Anthony Lynn seeing Taylor as more than a bridge quarterback. The fact remains that they can win with Taylor and #6 pick Justin Herbert (Oregon) might benefit from sitting, but at most Taylor will get a one-year audition to be a bridge quarterback for someone else. Herbert is a ďparts are greater than the sumĒ quarterback prospect who is as likely to doom the team to quarterback purgatory as he is to get the most out of his talented teammates, and the team traded 37 and 71 to get Kenneth Murray (Oklahoma) a seek and destroy weak side linebacker who might be exposed if he is asked to change directions or drop into coverage, so they canít take a tackle to fill the hole on the right side from this quality class.

    Amari Cooper
    , WR, DAL
    - Cooper is in his prime and the Cowboys just gave him a market-setting deal, but he wasnít clearly ahead of Michael Gallup in the second half of the year and now he has to deal with Ceedee Lamb joining the offense. You should sell him if you can 80% of what he was worth before the draft.

    San Francisco 49ers
    - Trading down one pick and still getting your target while adding a fourth-round pick was a shrewd move by John Lynch, but he got a vastly inferior replacement for DeForest Buckner who represented a big net loss in quality (with Kinlaw having a chance to develop and close the gap) even if it is a lot cheaper. The team then gave away the extra fourth and a fifth to move up for Brandon Aiyuk (Arizona State) another receiver with some discrete strengths as a runner after the catch and moments as a route runner, but he still has holes in his game and might overlap with Deebo Samuel more than complement him.

    NFC East Offensive Tackles -
Good luck against Chase Young. Good luck against the Washington defensive line for that matter.

    NOT A LOSER

    Ceedee Lamb, WR, DAL
    - Let him fall out of the top five of rookie drafts and into your lap. Heís the best all-around receiver in this draft and he has a long and fruitful career ahead of him, even if a crowded wide receiver group will make it hard for him to have a WR1/WR2 level impact for a while.

Rams | Jared Goff restructures deal
Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff restructured his contract Friday, April 24, freeing up $7 million in salary cap space for 2020, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Rams needed it to happen. They've moved a lot of big contracts off the roster for much-needed salary cap space. Goff is signed for a high price through the 2024 season.

Colts | Trey Burton says he rushed back
Indianapolis Colts TE Trey Burton (hip, sports hernia) said Friday, April 24, he was 'misdiagnosed' and rushed back from a sports hernia in 2019 with the Chicago Bears, implying that it resulted in hip surgery and his release from the Bears.
Footballguys view: Burton was better when he was with the Eagles. Things fell apart, including his body, when he signed with the Bears. He's got a fresh start now with the Colts. We'll see if that changes his fortunes in the NFL.

Raiders | Derek Carr remains in saddle
Las Vegas Raiders QBs Derek Carr remains the team's starter after the team used five first-round picks on other positions the last two seasons.

Packers | Jordan Love ready to learn
Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love says he's preparing to be a sponge and soak up knowledge from current Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. 'I'm going to get back here and learn as much as I can from Aaron,' Love said. 'He's an amazing player, and I know I'm going to learn a lot from him. I'm not sure how that situation is going to work, but like I said I'm just excited to be behind him and do whatever the team needs when I'm (called) upon.'
Footballguys view: Love needs to learn as he's not ready to start at the pro level. He has a gunslinger mentality and loves to be aggressive with the ball. That gets him into trouble as a passer. His mechanics are damn good and Love has plenty of arm strength and athleticism.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers miffed with pick
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is 'pissed off' with the team trading up and selecting QB Jordan Love in the first round of the NFL Draft, NFL reporter Peter King told a Boston radio station Friday, April 24.
Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Rodgers is the ultimate competitor and after making a deep playoff run in 2019 the plan could have been getting him some wide receiver help on offense in the first round. Instead, the Packers drafted perhaps his eventual replacement.

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk atop SF board
San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk was coach Kyle Shanahan's top-rated wide receiver in the draft, Shanahan said Thursday, April 23, and the team traded up to to select him with the 25th-overall pick.
Footballguys view: That's pretty bold considering this is the greatest wide receiver class in NFL history, featuring guys like Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb and Henry Ruggs. Aiyuk is good, especially when it comes to running after the catch. He'll make a great complementary receiver opposite of DeeBo Samuel.

Cowboys | Amari Cooper to play more slot?
Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper could play more from the slot with the Cowboys drafting WR CeeDee Lamb in the first round Thursday, April 23, according to one NFL personnel analyst.
Footballguys view: Lamb and Michael Gallup on the outside are a formidable duo by themselves. Move Cooper into the slot and you're really dangerous. The Cowboys have a ton of options, and more weapons for QB Dak Prescott, with Lamb picked in the first round on Thursday night.

Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa elicits security
Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) hasn't been examined by the team's doctors since the scouting combine, but head coach Brian Flores said Thursday, April 23 that the team was very secure in drafting the Alabama product with the fifth-overall pick. Flores added, though, it's too early to speculate when the rookie might get on the field this coming season.
Footballguys view: Tagovailoa is likely to sit for a bit of time behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. We could see the Dolphins using Fitzpatrick to begin the regular season then Tagovailoa taking over around the midway point. We'll see this competition unfold in training camp.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel still drawing interest
Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel continues to draw interest from teams pursing a trade. The Panthers haven't been interested so far, but they could if they receive an offer they can't refuse over the next few days.
Footballguys view: Samuel is likely to find a new home if the Panthers can find the right offer. He's a threat after the catch and can turn short catches into long gains. The Panthers added WR Robby Anderson in free agency and D.J. Moore continues to get better and better. Samuel needs a fresh start with a new team where he could actually see the field more.

Chiefs | Clyde Edwards-Helaire draws lofty comp
Kansas City Chiefs first-round pick RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire was highly regarded by coach Andy Reid, who reportedly told general manager Brett Veach that Edwards-Helaire is 'better than (Brian) Westbrook.'
Footballguys view: Westbrook was a star under Reid back in the day with the Eagles. While we won't say he's better than Westbrook, Edwards-Helaire does look like a young Ray Rice. He's an excellent pick for the Chiefs due to his compact size, contact balance, instinctive running style and outstanding receiving ability.
