What are the best stats to use in fantasy baseball(batting/pitching)

My friend wants me to join his money league, but I think the stats he is using are junk. The stats in red are the ones I have a problem with. I think the stats used in fantasy are best when predictable, and not penalizing. Also I do nt see how we are supposed to ever have a postive pitching performance, when every hit/ base/ or solid contact by a batter is penalizing.

    Thoguhts?
    Batters Stat Category Value
    Runs (R) 2
    Hits (H) 1
    Doubles (2B) 1
    Triples (3B) 2
    Home Runs (HR) 3
    Runs Batted In (RBI) 2
    Stolen Bases (SB) 3
    Caught Stealing (CS) -2
    Walks (BB) 1
    Hit By Pitch (HBP) 2
    Strikeouts (K) -3
Ground Into Double Play (GIDP) -3
Hitting for the Cycle (CYC) 4
Grand Slam Home Runs (SLAM) 4
    Pitchers Stat Category Value
    Innings Pitched (IP) 1
    Wins (W) 3
    Losses (L) -3
    Shutouts (SHO) 5
    Saves (SV) 2
    Hits (H) -1
    Earned Runs (ER) -2
    Home Runs (HR) -3
    Walks (BB) -1
    Strikeouts (K) 3
    Stolen Bases Allowed (SB) -1
    Total Bases Allowed (TB) -1
    No Hitters (NH) 5
    Quality Starts (QS) 2
    Blown Saves (BSV) -2

HBP should be in there but it should count the same as a BB not more
CS is fine to have in there
K are always a borderline call, -3 is punishing the too much, as making an out is already punished by the rest of the scoring
GIDP are a definitively bad out come so punishing them is fine but again -3 is too much
Cycles and grand slams are just random nothings and shouldn't be in there

Wins and loses shouldn't be in there as they too depend on a teams hitters than the pitcher.
Stolen bases allowed is an odd stat that is as much about catcher as the pitcher and shouldn't be there
walks and earened runs are fine although -3 is too much for an ER
Hits, Total bases and home runs shouldn't all be there just hits or just HR would be fine TB are insane (look a HR allowed is -10 pts)
NH and SHO are too rare to be worth having tracked.

Looking at these stats why would you ever have a pitcher in your line up, a quick look, Verlander put up like 6-8 pts per start last year! and he was the best, these numbers probably have about 80% of pitchers posting negative numbers

Obviously your friend has put zero thought into these league and I wouldn't bother to join for free.

really if your going to use a points based system used the ones developed for Ottoneu

They at least have alot of thought put into what scores players get and why they get them as opposed some nut checking boxes on ESPN.

Caught stealing or at least net steals is a decent stat, if you are looking at using that stats that measure the value of a player. Caught stealing does provide negative value from a player and assuming that you are trying to use stats that measure the value or at least well a player plays is should be there.

That is a lot of stats to keep track of. I wouldn't even know where to begin with. I"m pretty happy with standard basics.

For me personally it's WHIP for pitching.

I don't like stolen bases allowed either. Seems like a waste of a stat... plus it's very subjective to the opponent's speed- something the pitcher has no control of.

yeah thats crazy, GIDP? Losses? pitchers allowing steals? HBP??? thats pretty insane they are all total chance categories that you cant really draft for or set a lineup to try to play with....one category i do like though is Net Stolen Bases...its not just steals, its number of steals minus number of caught stealings....that way people cant just stream base stealers without penalty

Ususally managers that set up scoring systems like this are looking to exploit others lack of knowledge. This is kind of like cheating

I don't care for that scoring system.

It would be tough keeping track of all the variables involved to make sound decisions.

    Thanks for your input.

Surprisingly he can only find 3 other people outside of himself who wants to join this joke of a league. Then he wants a $100 buy-in, on tope of the pure stupidity of the league scoring structure. This is a legue that will piss everyone off, and will be abandoned by the end off May.

I'm not joining, rather have joined some standard rotisserie leagues.

Ok So I caved in, and joined his league. Everyone was pissed with the scoring system, as they paid for their spots w/o looking up the rules.

He changed the rules once again B4 the draft...

I noticed after the rule changes that total bases equaling -1 wroks against starting pitching. My strategy turnecd to getting the best closers, thus limiting the chances of losses, total bases ER, and a crushing stat HR's. Instead go for the saves, poaching W's, and K's.

    Batters Stat Category Value
    Runs (R) 2
    Hits (H) 1
    Doubles (2B) 1
    Triples (3B) 2
    Home Runs (HR) 3
    Runs Batted In (RBI) 2
    Sacrifice Hits (SH) .5
    Stolen Bases (SB) 2
    Caught Stealing (CS) -1
    Walks (BB) 1
    Hit By Pitch (HBP) 1
    Strikeouts (K) -2
Ground Into Double Play (GIDP) -1
Hitting for the Cycle (CYC) 1
Grand Slam Home Runs (SLAM) 1
    Pitchers Stat Category Value
    Innings Pitched (IP) 1
    Wins (W) 10
    Losses (L) -5
    Shutouts (SHO) 1
    Saves (SV) 5
    Earned Runs (ER) -1
    Home Runs (HR) -1
    Walks (BB) -1
    Strikeouts (K) 3
    Balks (BLK) -1
    Total Bases Allowed (TB) -1
    No Hitters (NH) 5
    Perfect Games (PG) 10
    Quality Starts (QS) 3
    Blown Saves (BSV) -2

    My Team

Offensively in the later rounds I focused on guys who dont K. Lightweight hitters, but they avoid the only crushing negative offensive stat in our league.
