Machine Plays: 2-1
Yesterday, Boise St gave me my first easy win this year and tonight I'm calling for an even easier win.
Last year in the 6th game of the season vs Kansas, Texas A&M brought in QB Ryan Tannehill as the new starter and he then proceeded to go ballistic against some amazing defenses, including Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. He threw for 1,638 yards in only 5 1/2 games! Now he gets back all his receivers -- ALL of them. Leading WR Jeff Fuller will not be 100% tonight (hamstring), but he will play. And even if he didn't, it won't matter. Texas A&M is so loaded at WR, their guys are fighting like wild dogs for playing time.
SMU got absolutely torched last year against good offenses (Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, ECU) and Texas A&M this year will have the best offense that SMU has seen since June Jones arrived at SMU in 2008. No one else has come close to the experience that Texas A&M returns this year on offense (10 starters, 5 seniors).
Texas A&M's defense returns 8 starters including EVERY defensive back, and last year they cut their teeth against the 17th hardest schedule in NCAA football. Yet they still held those lethal teams to less than 22 points per game. SMU will seem like child's play next to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas. SMU QB Padron is going to have a hell of a time finding open receivers against these Big 12 speedsters. Padron's eye-popping numbers last year came against the likes of UTEP, Tulsa, Tulane and Marshall. When he takes the field in College Station and faces a team slobbering to showcase themselves for the SEC and national media, he will wish he could go back in locker room.
