I like Braves and White Sox plays, rjt. I'm wondering about the reasoning behind the Brewers play, however. Bush has been hit pretty hard this season and faces some pretty hot bats in the Phillies lineup. The Crew's bullpen will also be fatigued after getting a lot of work in the series against the Cards. Apart from his last start, Hamels has pitched extremely well this season. Although even in his worst starts, he pitches as well as Bush. I sort of like the Phillies RL in this one but would love to hear your thoughts on it...

Hamels is an elite pitcher and has not lost 2 starts since losing 2 in a row to start 2007. The phillies bats are hot and the phillies have hit Bush hard in the past. The brewer bullpen almost succeeded at giving a game away to the cardinals. I do not think that Bush or the brewer bullpen will be able to cool off the phillies. Hamels after losing a game is nearly unbeatable even on the run since April of 2007. Just take a look at his 2007 stats.

Basically, I don’t think Hamels has earned -140 status on the road against one of the better teams in the NL. The Brewers’ lineup hammers LHP (.288 as a team last season, .297 so far this season). With the exception of Prince, it’s a lineup that, from top to bottom, has worn out LHP, even more so at home. Beyond that, Bush is a very effective pitcher at Miller Park (1.13 WHIP, .243 BAA for his career). Of his 31 career starts at Miller, 20 have been quality starts, with the Brewers 20-11 in those games.

As for the bullpens, I’m counting on Bush giving me 6 or 7, which he’s been pretty consistent in doing during his tenure in Milwaukee. If he doesn’t, then Milwaukee’s chances of winning are significantly less regardless of what shape the bullpen is in. Mota’s really the only vital piece of that pen that’s definitively unavailable – Riske and Torres should both be available. Gagne’s probably out, but that’s obviously not a bad thing. Turnbow’s probably the closer tomorrow, which doesn’t exude much confidence, but if the Brewers get to the 9th with a lead, then a +130 home dog is well worth it. Also, Philly’s pen isn’t in great shape either, with Lidge likely out after working 3 straight games and 4/5 overall.
