Clemens suspended for throwing at Toronto's Rios
NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens has been suspended for five games for intentionally throwing the ball at Alex Rios of the Toronto Blue Jays, Major League Baseball (MLB) said on Thursday.
Clemens was also fined an undisclosed amount for the incident which occurred in the seventh inning at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on Tuesday.
Four innings earlier, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was hit in the leg by a pitch from Josh Towers. Both benches emptied but no punches were thrown.
Clemens and New York manager Joe Torre were ejected by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez after the seventh-inning incident.
Torre was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount, said MLB's vice president of on-field operations Bob Watson.
The Yankees manager will serve his ban on Friday when his team visit the Cleveland Indians.
Rodriguez and New York coaches Larry Bowa and Tony Pena and Toronto's Towers, Matt Stairs and coach Brian Butterfield also received undisclosed fines.
