    Mauer retires

How close is he to the HoF?

    Frankly Mattingly is closer.

wasn't a fan of giving him mvp that year. they had him and tex over jeter. jeter best player in baseball but not a stat stuffer. should have won at least one mvp, but its all about the stats.

Great player, not HOF though. I'll never forget that 2006 team. Morneau was the AL MVP, Mauer was the AL batting Champ, Santana the AL Cy Young. Liriano 3rd in AL Rookie of the Year voting, Nathan 5th in AL Cy Young voting as a closer and they were promptly swept by the Oakland Athletics.

Similar games played, ops, OPS+ to Mattingly -- the Gold Glove catcher clearly had a better career.

He is easily the best retired catcher not in the Hall-of-Fame, so he is definitely deserving, but probably won't make it.

2 careers really.... in the dome and not in the dome. Numbers speak for themselves and that is why hes not HOF.

Probably the most leverage a guy will ever have that MVP season regarding his contract he never lived up to.

Had he stayed a catcher he'd be HOF but with 1/3 his games not behind the dish his .300 average isnt so special among the others out there.

It definitely helps him that his was a catcher when putting up good numbers. If he gets in I think that will have lot to do wth it

I know what you mean about a guy having two different careers. I'm an Angels fan, and suffering through watching the era of Albert Pujols...ugh. He's become completely irrelevant, I wish he would just retire.

I'm not sure about Mauer having no chance at the Hall of Fame. Plenty of pundits are saying the exact opposite. I haven't really delved into the numbers.

Giants averaged like 7 runs a game that WS and still lost.

Yup... thou AP still hits hrs he just isnt on base much anymore. Very 1 dimensional.

Since 2013 move to 1st base Mauer is about a .270 hitter, this represents 1/3 his career and 5 of the 6 seasons at Target Field.

Prior, while in the dome and catching, he was a .340 hitter and had he maintained some semblance of OBP if not BA similar to those years he'd be a HOF however it is abundantly clear his style of hitting the ball on the ground and opposite field was greatly aided by the speed of the turf versus the grass.

Really cant imagine another player outside of the bombers that come out of Colorado that are reliant upon a stadium for stats.

    9 home runs. Disappointment.

Mauer made $217 million for his career after 2006.

Morneau made $96 million for his career after 2006.

I'd say they both did alright.

It might be safe to say that the Mauer contract ruined the Twins for a decade, maybe more.

I dont know if that plays into national sentiment but locally it's a sore subject.

Many pieces of that nucleus and many youngsters passed by, FA busts and mediocre records that mgmt just couldn't afford to pull off a late season trade for $$$ reasons....

Would MN have been a better club w Pyrszinski at catcher or Ramos??

Bobby Bowden said "Mauer is the best high school QB I've ever seen".

Mauer was a 5 star recruit in football. Absolutely he chose baseball.

Never again should anyone say "he has no chance" when talking about any player's chances for the HOF; the Hall is starting to turn into a participation trophy.
