Why do the batters run to first if it's a Out on foul ground?

I never understood why batters run to first base when they pop-up and it's gonna drop in foul ground. I mean, if the position player ends up catching it, it's an out. If the position player drops it in foul ground, the batter has to go back and finish his at bat. So why run to first base? I don't get it.

batters are trained to run after any hit that could be inbound.
when you hit a ball, the decision to run or not is basically split-second.
on the way you can look up and see where it went or a base coach's signal
but not before you decide to run.
those who run more than they have to are just in-stride, when it's
easier to keep running and turn around than to stop in your tracks.

drilled in brain as a youngster from coaches as a hustle thing...better to have your youngsters get in a habit of running on any contact right?

the opposite tendency is you get kids standing and watching close ground balls, liners down the line or worse HR depth type shots that might fall short.

if you are gonna have a kid err on either running or not running, which would you coach? which has the biggest repercussions?

    but also

    a) you never know when a weird spin or wind will blow a ball back in play.
    b) weird shit happens in baseball. ball pops out of 3rd basemen glove as he collides with ball boy carrying metal chair ( we just saw this right), ball caroms off the catchers mask he is carrying in right hand, and donks off pitchers head like Canseco and ball lands in fair territory

    c) movement from the runner might cause, catcher, 1bmen, pitcher to get distracted on a foul pop along first base line

    d) ball is caught by first basemen, there is a runner on 1st who catches the first basemen napping as he gathers it and starts to run towards 2nd, tagging up. Batter just happens to be standing in way of player who caught the ball and 2nd (or 3rd) my American Legion Coach actually taught that as a play for hitters and runners to practice..... carry the bat with you, and as the ball is caught, get in between advancing bag and fielder and pretend to throw a bit of a demonstrative hissy fit.

    every play is an opportunity

do you coach for it to be an opportunity for laziness or ingenuity and hustle?

You get stiff in the dugout sitting around. Take every opportunity to stretch/limber up. Get back in the box and then beat out a grounder in the hole.

Because that one time out of 100 that the fielder misplays the ball and it winds up spinning or bouncing off his mitt into fair play and you're NOT at second base you get destroyed in PR, social media, news, sports, by teammates, coaches, general managers etc....and that costs millions next negotiation.

If you aren't willing to run 90 feet with nothing to lose, then you wouldn't be on my team!

I am pretty sure if the fielder makes contact with the balls and drops the ball in the foul territory its fair ball because it bounced off the player. Correct me if i am wrong.

If it hasn't hit the ground, it will be ruled where it lands regardless of the fielder standing in foul ground...remember that Canseco once had a routine ball hit off his head and into the stands for a HR....but had he been in foul territory and the ball bounced into fair territory without hitting the ground, it's be fair!

This is wrong. If a fielder makes contact with the ball in foul territory and it lands fair, it's a foul ball if the ump determines that the ball was in foul territory when it was touched. On the flip side, if a fielder makes contact with the ball in fair territory and lands foul, it's still considered a fair ball.

I see you didn't play any sports in your life. That's ok, you just asked a question. If a gust of wind comes up or it hits a bird and lands fair you can't be standing at home plate. Its just in case and it involves minimal effort.

Arch gave a great explanation. No need to add anything else.

Ask Arch about the time he had me down 0-2 in a fall league game, and he tried to punch me out with his slurve. I took that bitch 380' to deep center for a 3 run fukkin tank. Arch hasn't really spoken to me since. LOL.

Wish we still had access to the tutorial video that JJGOLD made a few years ago demonstrating the proper way to run the base pads.

If you are getting paid to play, you better be running to first base on a ball in the dirt.

If the pop up is obvious it's going to land in foul ground, regardless if the position player drops it and still lands in foul ground....why do batters still run to first?

You run hoping that God pushes that ball back into fair territory.

Clearly it's to teach hustle on everything. But... you do look like an a$$hole running to first when it's FOUL.

Not everyone runs. If it's close run. If not don't run.

I never see anyone run if it's obvious.

Also, as a hitter, a lot of the time the ball slices or hooks so off the bat it may look fair and then it starts tailing into foul ground.

I remember when Manny Ramirez would pop up in foul territory and start walking to the dug out. He was the real MVP. Guy had common sense.

Running out fouls? I don't see too much of that.

I sure see a lot of overpaid lazy phucks watching balls in fair territory (assuming they will be an out) jogging to first.
