    https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/influenza/

    Absolutely incredible

More people killed in the US in 10 months than all us wars COMBINED.

i definitely think that's what so many people - maybe me - have missed. namely, that this could go on for many months.

why is this so much bigger than SAR's? i'm in canada which was a SAR's epicenter. but i certainly don't remember all kinds of cancellations like this. it seemed like life basically went on much much more than in this case.

    1) social media at a real high point now compared to years ago
    2) more zombie and plague like movies/shows frightening people more than then
    3) CNN calling any new headline breaking news - not knocking CNN but no need for breaking news constantly with every new headline
    4) we as a whole are more pussified now than ever

thx for the response.... i do wonder about social media making everything bigger.

i got a response elsewhere of more contagious than SARs and you can have the symptoms and be spreading it and not even know. apparently the latter was NOT the case with SARs.

SARs was huge here in canada. but not too much life disruption, and then it left.

wiki (i think) has a nice SAR's graph showing it last 2-3 months. this is already pretty far along based on that time frame. not sure if it's the correct time frame.

CNN/CNBC/Fox etc. need to grab some experts and just ask them basic questions. no "talking head" vagueness.

I just watched the documentary referenced in this thread. Shit almost lasted a year, like 10 months or something. We're in for a rough ride if this gets anywhere close to that.

They said in just one month 200,000 Americans died. That's unimaginable. That's like an entire city dying. They said it got so bad cops were shooting people in public that didn't have masks or scarves on. Some people that got it committed suicide so they wouldn't spread it to their families.

In Boston, the same day they won the WS, people we're dropping dead from it right outside the stadium. This was probably the most shocking take away though. The age group that had the most deaths was 20-29, not the elderly or infants. Compared to that what we're dealing with now is mickey mouse.

agreed. need experts who know infectious diseases.

there is so much misinformation out there due to who is speaking on the news channels sometimes.

look up H1N1 AKA swine flu from just 2009..........

was MASSIVE........ but maybe it was just like some normal flu. huge number of cases, lowish death rate. but it killed alot of people.

where was the over-the-top reaction then?

i don't understand the contrast of this with swine flu. but i am willing to defer to CDC, WHO, NHI etc. on this...... they claim this is a massive emergency. that's good enough for me.

curious if anyone has thoughts...... and as i said, only 2009. NOT 1918.

    https://www.healthline.com/health-ne...)-flu-pandemic

    2009 (H1N1) flu pandemic

Back in 2009, a new type of flu — an H1N1 strain — popped up and people panicked because we didn’t have a vaccine and the novel strain was spreading fast.
Like COVID-19, there was no immunity at the start of the outbreak. We did have antivirals to facilitate recovery, and by the end of 2009, we had a vaccine which — combined with higher levels of immunity — would provide protection in future flu seasons.
Still, it claimed over 12,000 lives in the United States.

    • Key symptoms: fever, chills, cough, body aches
    • First detection: January 2009 in Mexico; April 2009Trusted Source in United States
    • Global cases: about 24 percent of global population; 60.8 million U.S. cases
    • Global deaths: over 284,000; 12,469 in the United States; death rate was .02 percent
    • Most affected groups: children had the highest rates; 47 percentTrusted Source of children between 5 and 19 developed symptoms compared to 11 percent of people ages 65 and up
    • Treatment available: antiviralsTrusted Source (oseltamivir and zanamivir); most people recovered without complications
    • Vaccine available: H1N1 vaccine research started April 2009 and a vaccine became available December 2009
    • End of pandemic: August 2010

I read some headline that Burn-ie In-the-Sand-ers said over 50 million in US will die from this. I didn't know he was a chief medical officer. I feel like such an idiot for not knowing that.

Swine flu killed over 500k people. Not a peep.

35k people IN THE USA died from the flu last year. Not a peep.

If you have no pre existing condition AND get the virus, your odds of death are 0.9% That is not a type.

If you're under and 60- 70 AND get the virus, odds of death are 3.8%

    Under 60? 1.8%

Anything under 50 is basically null.

NO children under the age of 9 have died.

We need to get a damn grip.

Numbers in Italy are scary. They are at about a 7% rate for death. THey've been in a total countrywide quarantine and yet their numbers have still gone up about 8000 people in the last two days. People are still only just now showing symptoms.

It's still going to get a lot worse in the USA for us.
