    Is The SI Swimsuit Issue Pornography Now?



    My wife seemed to think so last year. Some of the pictures are classified as swimsuit, even though they are holding the suit, instead of wearing it.

    Some groups are urging retailers not to openly display the cover as the magazine "normalizes genital display," according to the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.

    The group penned a letter to major retail chains including CVS, 7-Eleven, Walmart and Costco asking them to treat the SI mag as they would adult magazines and only partially display the cover.

    "Sports Illustrated’s 2015 Swimsuit issue’s cover does not simply feature a beautiful woman in a bikini, it borders obscenity as the focus is specifically on the exposed pubic area," executive director of the NCSE Dawn Hawkins said according to the New York Post.

    I remember when the first issue came out. Relatively tame with what is online. The old school issues with Cheryl Tieg were groundbreaking. The best part was when people would write in to the editor complaining or cancelling. Fuk, I am old.

    Some think SI has a responsibility that other media doesn't because their audience includes kids. I kind of agree. We were running to the mailbox in the third grade to get SI mags and hang up the Larry Bird pictures.

    Why all the hubbub this year? This cover is no different than what's been in there for years.

    Look at 2012. There's less covered there.

    2009 is similar with it half pulled down. Same for 2008. 2003 there is no bottom.

    What about 1999?

    Tyra Banks in 1997.

    And those are just the covers.

    The only thing that is curious to me is why it's suddenly an issue now. People seem to be becoming more prude lately. Very odd.
