As the heroes of our youth continue to leave us, it reminds me how lucky we were to have them.
    Ugh.
    Rest in Peace Sir.

Well-said, str. I looked up to Whitey.

Some of the best Defensive teams in 1982/1985. I really think I'd rate the 1982 Cardinals as 2nd-best DEF team:
*My Best DEF team ever = 1970 BALT Orioles.

    Thanks Chucky.
Yeah, the 70 O,s were crazy good.
    82 Cards extremely solid.
    Certainly agree.

    The 1982 Cards hit 67 HR's, total.
The 2015 KC Royals were the 1982 Cards.

Yes, Nashy. Different era. The 1982 Cards featured (IMHO) best DEF SS ever and best DEF 1b ever.

Whitey didn't like Keith being tied to the drug scene. That made Keith expendable. Whitey was stubborn like that, he let Keith go and it was a mistake.

I don't want to say hate, but Herzog strongly disliked Keith.
Today's fun fact, Shea Stadium officially opened 60 years ago today.

Nashy, you got it, exactly. When Whitey found out that Keith was linked to Cocaine, Keith was dead to him.

After multiple disagreements with Cardinal management, most notably manager Whitey Herzog, Hernandez was traded to the Mets on June 15, 1983, for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey.

It tainted Whitey's viewpoint. Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey! You gotta be shittin' me.

Went to the Worlds Fair in 64 as a kid. Took in a Mets game at new Shea Stadium.
Loved Choo Choo Coleman the catcher and Ron Hunt and of course Ron Swaboda.
Think they played the Milwaukee braves that day if memory serves.

Remember the Swoboda running catch in 1969?

Great memories. Swoboda was a longtime sports broadcaster after that. Including a stop in Milwaukee.

Count all the runs that Agee/Swoboda saved in that series.

Berst Cardinals manager ever; nobody ever played small ball better than the Cards of the 80's. I miss that style of baseball.

Always liked Whitey Herzog. Great Baseball man in what I consider to be the greatest sport on planet Earth.
92 years is a pretty good run though. Can’t ask for much more that that!

    RIP Whitey.
