Crazy. He left pts on the board in 1h, too.

4pt lead. Punt and make em go 80 yards for TD.

Maybe Lanning is working off the Game Management manual that Cristobal left in Eugene.

The Duck players have to know Lanning is an asshole. Make em go 80 yards. What is there to think about?

Fired is extreme. But it was nice to see. Maybe UW does it twice to humble his arrogance.

nasher, sorry you lost your bet but disagree.

The program has improved under his watch, it would be a big mistake to get rid of him.

He is certainly an improvement to barrel chested Mario Cristobal.

I'm with Nash. Maybe not to the extent of firing him.

Lanning messed up. He took "100%" blame for the loss in the post-game. So what? Game is already over.

    My take:
    1) You have to take the FG at the end of the 1h.
...Two even teams. There's going to be more scoring.
...Down by 1 is perfectly good. Can always go for 2 later to catch up.
...Those pts are going to be valuable.

    2) End-game of the 2h. You wasted huge effort by your players.
...You got the goal-line stand where two great offenses were on display.
...Coaches sometimes call the ensuing drive the 4:00 drill. You want to chew up clock and gain field position.
...It was a great drive. They got three First Downs and chewed up 4:00.
...4th/3 around mid-field. Strategically, you have the game right where you want it.
...Punt and make the opponent play against Clock/Score/FieldPosition.

Make them go 80+ yards to beat you. That's the % play. Don't give them a short field.

If I'm a Duck player, I feel like I got cheated (by the coach).

Not like he had much a choice either Chucky.
Who's he going to deflect to, the Ball Boy?

Yeah, Cristobal did the same thing. On Sat and again on Sunday, Cristobal said "We should have taken a knee."

I give them credit for taking it off the players. So what?

I'm 100% on this. Game decision is part of the job description.

These coaches are DEFLECTING. They're taking the blame away from players. OK, doesn't change the fact that you messed up...and wasted the efforts of your players.

Going 80 yards in a minute and a half with one timeout isn't that difficult in this era. Whether they're looking at 50 yards or 80, either way the defense would have to stop them on downs and not on time. If they do get the first down the game is over; he made the right call.

How's that 'right call' work out?

Agree that him going for it on 4th down more than the average coach can lead to a lot of second guessing. It seems as though that is part of the team's identity in terms of being aggressive so you have to live and die with the risks.

The coach can only make the call, he can't play the game. If UW had needed 80 yards instead of 50, they probably would've scored a TD anyway.

nasher, people are way too fast calling for folk's heads nowadays.

You have to allow players and coaches to make some mistakes, learn and get better from it going forward.

There are a long list of great players and coaches that never would have become what they did had they been fired/cut after a year or 2.

    bad call Nasher

    Lanning a superstar in coaching

if healthy at QB, they win the P12 title and go to CFP final 4.

    watch.

Agreed, this Oregon team is complete. They are even decent on defense for a change.

The oddsmakers told us everything we needed to know. Utah a touchdown dog on its home field off a win at USC? Then they get buried.

    yes.

they have taken on the personality of Lanning, a pure defensive guy from his playing days in college to how he cut his teeth in coaching thru his ascent to Georgia DC under kirby.
