Former NFL QB Brian Griese leaving ESPN to join 49ers as quarterbacks coach: Source

Brian Griese is joining the San Francisco 49ers as the team's quarterbacks coach, a source confirmed to The Athletic. He is replacing Rich Scangarello, who left the 49ers to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky.

Griese, 46, spent 11 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback, playing for the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He won the Super Bowl during the 1998 season, serving as the Broncos backup quarterback behind John Elway. Griese finished his NFL career with 19,440 yards and 119 touchdown passes to 99 interceptions.

After his playing days, Griese transitioned to broadcasting, working for ESPN as an analyst for the network's college football coverage. In 2020, Griese joined the Monday Night Football crew.
The 49ers finished with a 10-7 record in 2021, advancing to the NFC Championship before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Thank God I don't have to listen to him call games any longer.

He could help Lance though, he comes from Hall of Fame stock.

Can't wait until the diversuty crowd claims racism because they hired someone with no coaching experience.

But with elite QB lineage, and even though the kid wasn't nearly as good as Bob, had a lifetime of QB experience.
The #BLM has no beef with this hire, well they can beef all they want, but it won't hold water.

Another gifted bloodline from the Pocket-City, called Evansville.
A decade in Indiana where this city produced unbelievable future star athletes.
They dominated Indiana in those two decades, the 60's and the 70's.
Mattingly, Greise, and had two starters on Jacksonville's runner-up team to UCLA in 1970. Plus 2 or 3 more.

And a record-breaking pitcher for the Cardinals... Benes.

Indiana also had the largest crowd of spectators, anywhere, for the high school basketball state championship, in the year 1980.
44,000 plus to watch another southern Indiana phenom --the biggest name ever in high school basketball in this state, the 1980 state championship--the legendary, " Damon Bailey"--still the all-time leading hs scorer--who just happened to score the game's final 5 points for his team, Bedford, to win that game by 2 or 3 points.

    Don't get me started!

As a life long Niners fan, I question this hire but obviously (hopefully) they know what they are doing..
Seems the team has been in disarray ever since Eddie Debartolo was stripped of principle ownership..
    That was 20+ yrs ago..

I have friends in Milford Indiana.
The one thing you don't do there is disrespect their sports, especially their hoops.
    You'll wake up dead.
And the Hoosier folks are the nicest people in the world.

Ever been to Indiana, Kosciusko County?
Millions of acres of land around the Amish doing nothing.
You get buried there, they ain't finding your body for a decade.

He has the potential to be good.
A lot of the QB position is mental too.
I don't know if he has what it takes upstairs.
Some say he's well grounded, we'll see.

He was Michigan’s starting QB in 1997 when they won their national championship.

Oh, this was their backup QB:

He has no background and he trust him with the future of the club. They should’ve hired him 1-2 seasons ago and see if he could help out Jimmy G.

The Niners took a tumble because the rules changed and took away the ability to manipulate the salary cap; the Niners only won under DeBartolo because he outspent everybody.

Word is that Jimmy's difficult to work with, likes to do his own thing.
Belichick saw something though, Kraft was the one who told Bill to move him.

Yes, Niners outspent everyone but Eddie was also a pure genius. The Yorks nearly destroyed the franchise as they were and are complete idiots. It was a miracle that Niners survived those years.

umm excuse me who's the HC of 49ERS

Kyle Michael Shanahan[1] (born December 14, 1979) is an American football coach who is the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Houston Texans. With the Falcons in 2016, Shanahan coordinated an offense that led the league in points scored and helped the team reach Super Bowl LI. He was hired in 2017 as the head coach by the 49ers, whom he led to an appearance in Super Bowl LIV.
Shanahan is the son of former Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, and after he led the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Kyle and Mike became the first father and son head coaching duo to reach the Super Bowl.

100% loser in all SUPER BOWLS and with teams he was involved wirh in NFL
