NFL Player News - Week of 2/19/18

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

Jets | NYJ all-in on Kirk Cousins
Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins will have heavy pursuit from the New York Jets, who are prepared to pay 'whatever it takes' to land him, according to sources.

Broncos | DEN favored for Kirk Cousins?
Washington Redskins impending free-agent Kirk Cousins is favored to sign with the Denver Broncos, in the opinion of SI.com's Peter King.

Jaguars | Allen Robinson a priority?
Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent WR Allen Robinson will likely take precedent over impending free-agent WR Marqise Lee when it comes to contract negotiations, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.

Bengals | AJ McCarron a game manager?
Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB AJ McCarron's 'ceiling is that of a solid game manager,' according to a scout.

Jets | Bilal Powell not a feature back
New York Jets RB Bilal Powell is viewed by the coaching staff as a complementary back, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Vikings | Case Keenum the frontrunner?
Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Case Keenum is still the favorite to return as the starter in 2018 because offensive coordinator John DeFilippo prefers athletic quarterbacks, according to Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

49ers | San Francisco interested in Marcell Ateman
The San Francisco 49ers are one of the teams that are high on Oklahoma State WR Marcell Ateman, according to sources.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles plans to play
Denver Broncos impending free-agent RB Jamaal Charles plans to play in 2018 but will not be re-signed by the Broncos.
Footballguys view: Charles proved that he still had some left in the tank last year with the Broncos. The team didn't really use him as much as they could, and that's likely to be the story with Charles from here on out for the rest of his career. Any team in need of a speedy, change-of-pace back could show interest in Charles.

Broncos | Virgil Green hopes to return
Denver Broncos impending free-agent TE Virgil Green said he would like to re-sign with the Broncos but is preparing for a change this offseason.
Footballguys view: Green has developed into a fine blocker and he's never been utilized much as a receiver. The Broncos don't have much at the tight end position, but we don't see them clamoring to keep Green on the roster in 2018.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins to file grievance if tagged
Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins will file a grievance if the Redskins decide to place the franchise tag on him, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Cousins can argue that the Redskins would be violating the collective bargaining agreement because the team would have no intention in having long-term contract talks with him or having him play on the franchise tag.

    Tuesday Update

Titans | Delanie Walker hit franchise milestones
Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker reached the 800-yard mark for the fourth consecutive season in 2017. He's the only tight end to reach that plateau even once in franchise history. In addition, he became the fourth player in the history of the Titans to record five consecutive seasons with at least 60 receptions.

Titans | Inconsistent elusiveness for Derrick Henry
Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry ranked third in the NFL - among players who recorded at least 175 carries - with 4.09 yards gained after defenders closed within one yard of him in 2017, according to Next Gen Stats. Henry decisively cleared 3.7 yards gained after close in five games, but he fell under that mark in all the others.

Patriots | Dion Lewis was hard to corral in 2017
New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis ranked second in the NFL - among players who recorded at least 175 carries - with 4.44 yards gained after defenders closed within one yard of him in 2017, according to Next Gen Stats.

Chiefs | Kareem Hunt a master of elusiveness
Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt led the NFL - among players who recorded at least 175 carries - with 4.63 yards gained after defenders closed within one yard of him in 2017, according to Next Gen Stats.

Dolphins | C.J. Anderson of interest to Miami?
Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson could be pursued by the Miami Dolphins again if he were to be released by the Broncos. Dolphins head coach Adam Gase and new running backs coach Eric Studesville both coached Anderson in Denver and Miami gave Anderson an offer just two years ago before it was matched by the Broncos.
Footballguys view: If (when?) Anderson is released by the Broncos, then we fully expect him to end up in Miami. The move makes too much sense for both sides. If Anderson was with the Dolphins he would form a RBBC with Kenyan Drake.

Dolphins | Miami to meet with Baker Mayfield
Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield will dine with members of the Miami Dolphins prior to Oklahoma's pro day March 14. The Dolphins own the No. 11 overall pick in this year's draft and are making an effort to get to know Mayfield if he remains available at that spot.
Footballguys view: Mayfield may not be on the board by the time the Dolphins pick. They might have to move up in front of the Jets (no6) if Mayfield is their guy.

Redskins | A Kirk Cousins tag and trade not realistic
Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could theoretically be franchise tagged by the Redskins, but if that were to occur then Cousins would not entertain a long-term deal with his new team and he would make a whopping $34 million under the tag. If Cousins did not immediately sign the tag, he could not be traded anyway. Furthermore, the Redskins would not be able to do much else in free agency and also just traded for Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.
Footballguys view: Washington wants to get something for Cousins before they lose him in free agency. Tagging him for a third time goes against the spirit of the rule, and there have been reports that Cousins would file a grievance if Washington went that route.

Lions | Eric Ebron not going anywhere
Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron will not be released as he enters the 2018 season under his fifth-year option. Ebron will be guaranteed $8.25 million when the new league year begins. The inconsistent tight end's presence will limit playing time for fellow TEs Darren Fells and Michael Roberts.
Footballguys view: Ebron has yet to fully play up to his potential as a pro. The Lions will give him one more go and see if he can finally flourish. Fantasy owners know after three seasons as a TE2 what to expect from Ebron.

Eagles | LeGarrette Blount wants to stay in Philly
Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount wants to return to the Eagles, he told NFL Network during an interview.

Jaguars | Allen Robinson likely to be tagged
Updating an ongoing story, Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent WR Allen Robinson (knee) is expected to receive the franchise tag, if no long-term deal can be reached.

Nobody fukking knows. The true severity of his shoulder injury is like the most tightly guarded secret of all time, he MAY be ready or he might require more surgery to knock him out longer. I can't even hazard a guess.

    Wednesday Update

Colts | Andrew Luck throwing weighted balls
Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is throwing weighted balls, which are heavier than footballs, in his rehabilitation.

NFL | Nick Folk medically cleared
Free-agent PK Nick Folk (knee) has been medically cleared to resume kicking by Dr. James Andrews.

Dolphins | Miami looking to trade Jarvis Landry?
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent WR Jarvis Landry received the non-exclusive franchise tag Tuesday, Feb. 20 - the first day teams could assign the franchise tag to players - which is being interpreted as a desire by the Dolphins to trade him, according to a league source.

Colts | Indy hopes to have Andrew Luck at OTAs
Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) is still rehabilitating his throwing shoulder, but head coach Frank Reich hopes his star quarterback is healthy enough to participate in organized team activities.
Footballguys view: Reich can hope all he wants, but we'd be shocked if Luck did much of anything in OTAs during the spring. Luck just started throwing again, and the Colts need to be wise with him for the rest of the recovery time that is needed.

Titans | Ryan Succop given extension
Tennessee Titans impending free-agent PK Ryan Succop agreed to a multi-year contract extension Tuesday, Feb. 20. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell likely to be tagged
Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell is expected to receive the franchise tag again this offseason.
    Footballguys view
: That tag is worth $14.5 million. He and the Steelers would still be able to accomplish a long-term deal. Tagging him now would insure the two sides have more time (until mid-July) to get something done.

    Thursday Update

Colts | Adam Vinatieri agrees with Colts
Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent PK Adam Vinatieri (Colts) agreed to a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Feb. 22. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Falcons | Matt Bryant has mutual ATL interest
Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent PK Matt Bryant said there is mutual interest in returning to the Falcons.

Steelers | Eli Rogers off crutches
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers (knee) said he's off crutches as of Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert 'unlikely' to remain a Bengal
Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert is 'unlikely' to be re-signed by the team, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer, who believes someone would be willing to pay up for his services, even if it's on a 'prove-it' type deal.

Broncos | Chad Kelly working out with Phil Simms
Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly has been working out under the supervision of retired QB Phil Simms. The second-year quarterback is now healthy after being out for his entire rookie season due to pre-existing injuries and is preparing for his chance to compete for the starting job in Denver.

Saints | Meeting for Drew Brees deal expected soon
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees' representatives are expected to meet with the team at the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine 'to try to hammer out what is potentially a short-term deal,' according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. It is expected that the two sides find 'common ground' on deal that will fall between $20 million and $25 million annually.

Eagles | Alshon Jeffery out at least six months
Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) will miss at least six months and likely will miss the entire preseason but is expected to be ready for Week 1, according to a source. His surgery was to repair a full tear of his rotator cuff.

Jaguars | Marcedes Lewis to receive bonus
Jacksonville Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis will receive a $500,000 bonus after the team exercised his 2018 option, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Lewis will continue as a big-bodied blocker for the Jaguars. He is scheduled to receive a $3.75 million base salary in 2018 but it is not guaranteed.

Browns | Josh Gordon to be ERFA
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon will be an exclusive rights free agent this offseason because he did not play in enough games this season for an accrued season.
Footballguys view: ERFA means that Gordon can stop playing football or keep playing for the Browns. This designation insures that he's going to stick with the Browns for one more season.

Dolphins | Jarvis Landry looking for lucrative deal
Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry is believed to be looking for a contract similar to the four-year, $58 million contract Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams recently signed.
Footballguys view: Landry has been franchise tagged by the Dolphins and that gives the two sides more time to work out a long-term deal. The Dolphins have offered Landry a contract worth around $13 million per season, according to a source.

Steelers | Glaring splits for Ben Roethlisberger
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's touchdown to interception ratio on passes of at least 20 yards in home games last season was 8:1. The ratio for such passes in road contests plummeted to 1:3. His passer rating on such passes at home was 117.1 compared to 47.6 on the road.
Footballguys view: Fantasy owners already know Roethlisberger's home/road splits are problematic. Simply put, Roethlisberger has been better at home than on the road for quite some time.

Broncos | Trevor Siemian could be traded
Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian is expected to be on the trading block this offseason as the Broncos look to add at the position via free agency and/or the draft.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Siemian may fetch the Broncos a late-round pick but not much more than that. He's started over 20 games and could provide some team with a solid backup.

Colts | Frank Gore unlikely to be re-signed
Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent RB Frank Gore is not expected to be re-signed.
Footballguys view: He's not the same player he used to be, but Gore can still produce at the pro level. Gore will turn 35 years old this offseason but still wants to play. He is just 75 yards shy of reaching fourth on the NFL's all-time rushing list.

    Friday Update

Buccaneers | Jameis Winston uninjured in car accident
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston was not injured in a car accident last week in which his truck rear-ended another vehicle outside of Tampa.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake third-most elusive RB in '17
Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake ranked as the third-most elusive running back under an NFL 'Next Gen Stats' metric that measured yardage gained after defenders got within a yard of the ball-carrier. Drake finished third (4.55 yards), behind only New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara (4.76) and Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt (4.63).

Jaguars | No talks between Jags, Allen Robinson lately
Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent WR Allen Robinson said he has not had contract extension talks with the Jaguars since last year's training camp.
Footballguys view: There could be a bunch of interest in Robinson as he was very effective for Jacksonville when he was healthy. In the right landing spot he could be a solid fantasy wide receiver again.

Vikings | Sam Bradford intends to play
Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Bradford wants to play next season.

Footballguys view: The question is, where will the oft-injured quarterback get a job? He played well for the Vikings but his time there ended as many of his jobs have in the past - with him hurt. He could be a good bridge quarterback somewhere, if a team can hedge its bets a little against injury.

NFL | Gary Barnidge looking to play in 2018
Free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) said plans to play in 2018 and will look for the right opportunity during free agency. He said he received interest this past season but did not like the offers from teams.
Footballguys view: It was kind of weird he didn't play last season, and it's odd he would sit out if he had any chance to play. Could those offers have been worse than being stuck in Cleveland from a situation standpoint? Or was the money awful? Players play, though. So it's strange he didn't end up on the field. We think he has a lot of talent, but something here seems off.

Dolphins | Several Dolphins could rework deals
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill, SS Reshad Jones, WR Kenny Stills, LB Kiko Alonso and DE Andre Branch are all candidates to restructure their contracts this offseason so the team can create salary cap space.
Footballguys view: Wouldn't remotely be shocked if Tannehill and Stills weren't with the team come September. The only way they stick is likely to take a pay cut and the Dolphins can't be sold on Tannehill in particular.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas will be cut
Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas will be released this offseason, according to sources. The team will save $6.6 million in salary cap space with the move.
Footballguys view: More cap cutting for the Dolphins who had to be disappointed by Thomas' lack of production. Thomas is just about out of chances and has been unable to recapture the magic he briefly had in Denver.

Chargers | Nick Novak to hit market
Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent PK Nick Novak (hip) will be allowed to test the free-agent market, but the Chargers have informed him they are open to a new contract with him.

Buccaneers | Nick Folk officially released
Tampa Bay Buccaneers PK Nick Folk was officially released Thursday, Feb. 22. Folk spent the final three months of the season on the Reserve/Injured list.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor not expected to be cut
The Buffalo Bills are not planning to release QB Tyrod Taylor at this time and are open to paying his $6 million roster bonus in March. The team could still try to trade Taylor this offseason depending on what they do at the position.
Footballguys view: The Bills might wait to see what they can do to address the position in free agency and then flip Taylor. Given how hesitant they are to commit to him, forcing him to stick around isn't exactly a cool move, but they can't go into the season without either him or a new face.

Browns | New starting RB expected in Cleveland
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent RB Isaiah Crowell is not expected to be retained. ESPNCleveland.com's Tony Grossi believes the Browns' starting running back in 2018 will be a high draft pick.
Footballguys view: This could spell Saquon Barkley, especially with two picks in the first four. It's too early to read the tea leaves, and they could hit the free agent market as well.

Buccaneers | DeSean Jackson not being investigated
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR DeSean Jackson's case involving his vehicle that was allegedly found wrecked will bullets and marijuana is inactive. Tampa police said there were no witnesses or evidence to place the driver behind the wheel at the time of the wreck.

    Saturday Update

NFL | Antonio Callaway a risky prospect
Florida WR Antonio Callaway is a 'natural athlete' but comes with too many 'headaches,' according to an AFC personnel director.

NFL | Sam Darnold to throw at combine
Southern California QB Sam Darnold is expected to participate in throwing drills in the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine.
Footballguys view: Darnold could have used another year in college at USC, but even with some development needed we should see him selected in the top 10 of the first round. In fact, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Browns peg Darnold as the number one overall pick.

Jaguars | Replacement for Blake Bortles?
The Jacksonville Jaguars are actively pursuing upgrades to QB Blake Bortles, according to a league source.
Footballguys view: The Jaguars are one quarterback away from a team that could contend for the Super Bowl. With an upgrade at the position they should be seen as a favorite in the AFC. We'll see if they jump in the frenzy around Kirk Cousins or decide to go in a different direction this offseason.

Titans | Tennessee eyeing Jarvis Landry?
The Tennessee Titans could trade for Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins put the franchise tag on Landry, some think with the idea they could trade him before signing him to a long-term deal. The Titans selected Corey Davis last year in the top 5 of the draft, and pairing him with Landry would give QB Marcus Mariota a formidable duo of wide receivers.

Panthers | New targets for Cam Newton?
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess, WR Curtis Samuel and WR Damiere Byrd are the only receivers who should feel safe entering the 2018 season, according to David Newton of ESPN.com, and Newton believes the receiving corps could undergo a complete overhaul.
Footballguys view: The Panthers need to find better pass-catchers to put around Newton. Funchess is his main guy, and it would greatly help if Samuel stayed healthy in 2018 and started to show off the playmaking skills that got him drafted in the second round last year. Expect the Panthers to be looking for more skill position players in the 2018 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant has not been asked to rework deal
Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant said the Cowboys have not asked him to take a pay cut at this point. He said he can't see himself playing for another team.
Footballguys view: Bryant's future with the team is a bit up in the air at this time. The team needs to get more out of their star WR in 2018.

    Chargers | Nick Novak healthy
Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent PK Nick Novak (hip) said he has completely recovered from his hip injury and plans to play in 2018.

Broncos | Emmanuel Sanders making progress
Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (ankle) said his rehab is going well and believes his ankle is at around 95 percent.
Footballguys view: It looks like Sanders is going to stay with the Broncos in 2018. The team is trying to lure Kirk Cousins over to the Mile High City, and they'll best do that if Sanders and Demaryius Thomas are on the team.

NFL | Several quarterback prospects to threw at combine
UCLA QB Josh Rosen, Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, Wyoming QB Josh Allen and Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph are all planning to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Eagles | Trey Burton unlikely to return to Philly
Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent TE Trey Burton reportedly recently received a contract offer he 'didn't consider serious' and is expected to sign with another team when free agency begin in March, according to a source.

    Sunday Update

Jaguars | Allen Robinson back on the field
Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent WR Allen Robinson (knee) sent out a video on Twitter that showed himself jogging on the field.

Giants | Odell Beckham unlikely for preseason
New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (ankle) sent out a tweet Saturday, Feb. 24, indicating that he is unlikely to play in any preseason games.

Bears | Tarik Cohen wants to make plays
Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen said he can do 'the same kinds of things' as Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill, and he feels he will develop into a playmaker under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

    NFL | Lamar Jackson a first-rounder?
Louisville QB Lamar Jackson 'is worthy of a first-round selection' in the 2018 NFL Draft, according to Chad Reuter of NFL.com.

Patriots | Danny Amendola favoring New England?
New England Patriots impending free-agent WR Danny Amendola will likely re-sign with the Patriots if he decides to play another season, in the opinion of Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles receives new deal
Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles agreed to a new three-year contract with the Jaguars Saturday, Feb. 24, worth $54 million, according to a source. The deal includes $26 million in guaranteed money and could be worth as much as $66.5 million with incentives.

Broncos | Jake Butt may work with starters
Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) likely will work with the first-team offense during offseason workouts.

Texans | Alfred Blue could return
Houston Texans impending free-agent RB Alfred Blue could re-sign with the Texans this offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Sarah Barshop.
Footballguys view: The Texans have Lamar Miller and D'Onta Foreman to lead the way on the ground in 2018. If Blue is brought back, he would only serve as a depth player with a very limited role.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman could see more touches
Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman may take more touches from RB Lamar Miller next season and could take over as the team's top running back, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Sarah Barshop.
Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation in training camp. Miller is the better all-purpose back, but the team might want more power that Foreman brings to the field.

Jaguars | Corey Grant could have bigger role
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Corey Grant could receive a bigger role on offense next season with RB Chris Ivory no longer on the team, in the opinion of The Florida Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran.
Footballguys view: Grant will be the player fantasy owners want to handcuff to Leonard Fournette. If Fournette gets banged up, then Grant could have RB2 upside.

Bills | Buffalo had interest in Martavis Bryant
The Buffalo Bills had interest in acquiring Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant during the regular season.
Footballguys view: The Bills could use some better weapons in the passing game. Bryant would provide the speed and big-play ability that they currently don't have in guys like Kelvin Benjamin or Zay Jones.

Steelers | PIT, Martavis Bryant not talking contract
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has not had any contract extension talks with the Steelers. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
Footballguys view: The Steelers don't have Bryant on the trade block per reports. However, they have been fielding calls about the veteran wide receiver.

Eagles | Torrey Smith expects to return
Philadelphia Eagles WR Torrey Smith said he expects to be back with the Eagles next season even though the team would save $5 million in salary cap space if he is released.
Footballguys view: Smith could return to the Eagles, but there has been rampant speculation that they'll let him go. The Eagles might go into penny pinching mode this offseason after winning the World Championship.

Falcons | Andre Roberts expects to hit market
Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent WR Andre Roberts said he hopes to re-sign with the Falcons but expects to hit the free-agent market.

Bortles and HOF should never be typed in the same paragraph.
