I take your point micase, the Panthers are definitely on an upward path. They've put a hell of a lot into developing a team that'll be in the finals, and they've got some quality players.
To me though, this just looks a great spot for Newcastle's first game. There'll be some underlying pressure on the Panthers, despite whatever they say to the contrary, and the team will take time to gell. A lot is riding on how well Wallace and Soward work as a pairing, but great half combinations don't just happen whenever you put a top class 6 & 7 together. They didn't get an official practice game together, and there has to be some doubt about them complementing each other. We'll see. I hope they do for the Panthers sake, and I'm pretty sure they will.
My angle into this game is the fact that the Knights play so well as underdogs. Despite the fact that it's the players out there doing the winning and losing, a great coach like Bennett is a massive asset. This is just the type of game that Wayne Bennett excels in. He's got a knack for getting his team to work for him, and he knows Soward's game from having coached him at the Saints. I'm pretty sure there'll be an edge there somewhere. Either way, the preparation will have been thorough. I think anything less than another top 4 spot will be considered an underachievement by Bennett, if not by the rest of the club (I said failure before, but that's a bit harsh), and a win in this game would probably be of more importance to the Knights in the context of each team's seasonal aspirations (in my opinion the Panthers are realistically high top 8 material at best, while the Knights will have a slim show of a Grand Final appearance).
This Knights team does go beyond Jarrod Mullins. Michael Dobson is no replacement really. At best he'll do a job, but he's got plenty of experience. The team has its' fair share of talent beyond Mullins though.
I thought the Knights would start as favourites for this. Even with Jamal Idris out for Penrith the line hasn't really moved. I wonder what price the Knights would be with Mullins in? If he's that pivotal to the team's chances then the +110 available at the bookmakers currently would have to be, what -120?
Anyway, Round 1 is Round 1, and there's plenty to learn from this weekend and the next few.

As a Broncos fan, YEH! What a defensive effort.

Won some on Broncos +4.5 but definitely should have listened to the under call. WD guys.

So impressed by Maranta tonight. Skilled, confident and a very smart player. Hope he does well this year.

Barba needs to practice his kicking.

I can see the Cowboys putting on a clinic and Milford should be good for a try or two to get the over to hit.
FWIW, this game is at 40.5 on Bet365

It has come in then - when I placed the bet they had it at 44. They must be expecting tropical cyclone tonight.

    Knights +2 @ $1.93 (Palmerbet) - 1 UNIT

    Storm +6 @ $1.93 (Palmerbet) - 1 UNIT

Like the Knights here, even without Mullen.
Panthers have a rookie in the centres replacing Idris.
Grant has been ruled out of the game too.

Dobson is no mug and he was decent when he played in the NRL a few years ago.
Hot day in Sydney today, especially out west.
I expect a similar game to last night - tight forward battle.

Knights have a 5-1 record at Penrith since 2004.

    ---------------------------------------

Storm are getting too many points here, especially with Manly's starting wingers from last season out with injury.
Yes the Storm have no Cronk, but Bellamy coached sides don't get blown out of the park in the early rounds.
I expect them to keep it close and they have their fair share of game-breakers in their team also.
Lots of bad blood between these two teams.

Looking good so far, Mansour is an absolute beast. Not too many people that can score both those tries.

Newcastle getting a bit harshly done by with the calls. Not enormous errors, but very costly.

Gidley hit in the face (almost knocked him out) is not a penalty, but a knock on - PEN try from that set.

Moylan clearly dropped the ball on his 25m quick tap run, not called - PEN try from that set.

Edit: PEN broken them open now. Damn.

Sando, you worried about a back door cover in the Raiders game?
The Cowboys play the Broncos next up at Suncorp - they may rest a few late on.

No sure about any netball plays this week. Possibly one play.

I'm a bit gun shy after last weeks loss and the fact I was very close to making under 112.5 a play today (which would have lost).

    Need to reassess.

Good luck today Sando & all you guys on the thread. I like the Tigers as well. f#ck what an unpredictable round we've had so far. This season could see a lot more parity than expected, but I also think that after a few weeks the elite teams will sift through to the top.

Anyone have an insight into the England/Wales 6 Nations match later today? I'm having a hard time working with the -3.5 line on England. Is Twickenham worth more than 3 points? Leaning Wales but could easily be swayed. Thx.

Initially yes, but i'm not sure what impact the staph infected boils will have on the players that were affected.
Leaning to the under in this game - both shit teams, expect lots of dropped ball and handling errors.

Very impressed with the Raiders last night - If Wighton had a better game they probably would have won straight up.
Early days, should make for an interesting few first weeks.

    Netball

    T-Birds @ Firebirds

    1* T-Birds +2.5 (-114/$1.88 Sportsbet)
    0.5* T-Birds ML (+135/$2.35 Sportsbet)

T-Birds defence last week against the Pulse was phenomenal. Beat I have seen at club level in a long time.

Thunderbirds have been behind at halftime only to win at halftime in four out of their last five matches. This is paying $8.50.

T-Birds win in a canter. Simply ferocious defence.
