Steely Dan - tribute with Great songs

RIP, Walter Becker. You left your mark.

It's personal preference but arguably the best studio band ever. They disliked touring and playing live. Instead, they MASTERED the art of producing album music.

Wish I had the vocabulary to match their song-writing. Innuendos and double-meanings, Steely Dan produced such a listenable discography. Catchy songs done perfectly, true mastery of their craft.

They used a series of musicians to get it just right. I am reluctant to call any "Dan" song my favorite, but this one might take the cake:

Can't stand their use of a drum machine. Have to change stations when one of their songs comes on.

I was never a big fan of them way back when they were on top for some reason. Liked them but didn't love them. Nowadays I have come to appreciate how great they were. I'm more into jazz and blues these days so maybe that's why. Didn't realize Becker has passed. RIP.

Did any band ever take studio work to this level? OK, it's art, I'm biased.

When I heard some of the popular Steely Dan songs, I splurged for some of their cassette Albums. And this is when I had NO money. To me, the BEST artists are the ones that make great ALBUMS.

So many great songs. I could listen to this stuff for days...and not get tired of it. Perfection.

One other thing about Steely Dan songs. You could fill a book with theories about what the lyrics refer to. Donald and Walter were very bright guys, this was all well thought out.

Like other great artists, the meaning is open to interpretation. The song is individualized by becoming whatever YOU want it to be.

What is pretty obvious about this song? It's an allusion to heavy drug use:
*"To open the red door." = pop open a vein.
*"Lay down your Jackson" = for the small price of $20.
*"Skinny girl" = slang for Cocaine.

Geez...Becker died in 2017. I know I read about this before but for some reason I thought this was a recent event. My bad.

Walter Becker, the guitarist and songwriter who made suavely subversive pop hits out of slippery jazz harmonies and verbal enigmas in Steely Dan, his partnership with Donald Fagen, died on Sunday. He was 67.
His death was announced on his official website, which gave no other details.

[Mr. Becker’s wife, Delia Becker, said in a statement on Nov. 15 that he had died at their home in New York City “in the course of being treated for an extremely aggressive form of esophageal cancer.” He also had a home in Maui, Hawaii.]

Steely Dan is in my top four favorite bands.

    1. Queen
    2, Killers
    3. Led Zep
    4. Steely Dan

Becker and Fagen was as good as a one-two punch as they came.
As good as Mick and Keith.
Yeah, Steely Dan was that good.

And this is IMO the perfect Steely Dan tune.
Yeah, musically it's as good as it gets.

Nice, man. Interesting how people dig different music.

My thing about Steely Dan: *One of the best ALBUM BANDS ever.

They took the musician-ship to a level that is rarely seen. Read the background on how they made albums. They used multiple studio musicians, b/c they wanted to get it PERFECT. I'd argue that many of their tracks are timeless.

I mention that I like their ALBUMS. IMHO, not too many dud songs on their albums.

Of course, they realized early on that they didn't like Live shows. I'm 100% cool with that. I have found that a lot of bands sound bad live. Instead, they focused their efforts on studio work. Just my opinion, for the most part they hit Home Runs.
