How the CIA Tried to 'Break' Prisoners in 'The Salt Pit'

The Salt Pit and Cobalt are the code names of an isolated clandestine CIA black site prison and interrogation center in Afghanistan. It is located north of Kabul and was the location of a brick factory prior to the Afghanistan War. The CIA adapted it for extrajudicial detention.

On March 3, 2005, an article by Dana Priest titled "CIA Avoids Scrutiny of Detainee Treatment" and published in The Washington Post exposed the existence of a "black-site" or secretly-run CIA interrogation facility in Afghanistan code-named the "Salt Pit." Located to the north of Kabul's business district, the Salt Pit was reported to be an abandoned brick factory built on a 10-acre site, consisting of a three-story building, as well as several smaller buildings.

Many of the most shocking scenes recounted in the Senate’s torture report all take place at a location known as ‘Cobalt,’ the ‘Dark Prison,’ the ‘Salt Pit,’ and a ‘dungeon.’

The report describes in detail the treatment of Ridha al-Najjar, who was identified by the CIA as a former bodyguard for Osama bin Laden and was the first detainee to be held by the agency at Cobalt after it opened in September 2002. Al-Najjar, who was captured in May 2002, was quickly softened up, according to the report. In an internal communiqué on Sept. 21, 2002, CIA interrogators described al-Najjar as "clearly a broken man" and "on the verge of complete breakdown" as result of isolation and severe procedures.

With the right forensic tools the Taliban can probably recover evidence of what exactly they were doing there, especially regarding allegations that they were covertly flying ISIS people into Afghanistan.
