This happened awhile ago, but like the others, feels like yesterday.
Billy was a nerdy white dude that used to work in the computer field. He got laid off and I ended up meeting him at a waffle house. Only reason I sparked a conversation with him was because he was wearing an Atlanta Falcons shirt. We got the talking and he said he has been unable to find work since getting laid off and his wife was considering divorce and taking the kids with her. Saddened by his financial troubles, I offered him a way out. I told him he could always smuggle drugs across the border. Explained to him he is the perfect candidate because he's nerdy looking, non-threatening and most important....... White.
He immediately said he wasn't going to do anything like that while laughing and joking about it and I told him that if he is ever interested, give me a call. So I finished my meal, left my number and bounced.
A few weeks later, I got a call from him. He asked if the offer was still on the table and told him of course. Made him look even more nerdy than he was and put him to work. The dude was a golden goose. Every run he made was successful. Until one day it all crumbled.
The car ended up getting a flat tire and while on the side of the interstate, a cop pulled up behind him and offered him a hand. Billy told the cop that he had it under control and then the cop started asking him where he was coming from and where he was headed to. Don't know what Billy told him, but the cop got suspicious and asked for his license and registration. Everything checked out, but the cop said he smelled something funny in the car and asked if he could looked around in it. Billy obliged and then the cop asked if he could take a look inside of the trunk. Billy said there was nothing in there and that's when the cop said "just let me take a look, this smell is driving me crazy"." Billy said, I don't really think that's necessary, but ok. Billy ended up opening the trunk and he said the cop looked around and saw nothing was there, but he went the extra mile and ended up grabbing the trunk panel and ripping it up. Billy told him to stop as he was damaging the car, but the cop wasn't hearing any of it and told him to get back.... And underneath was where all of the drugs were. Cop immediately grabbed his gun and told him to get on the ground and called for backup.
He called me explaining to me the entire situation and asked if there was anything I could do and all I told him was.... "Nope, we never met as far as I'm concerned." And hung up.
Billy ended up going to prison for the first time in his life and he couldn't take it and ended up committing suicide within the first two months.
Rest in Peace, Billy
