    Carpenter injured?

Carpenter escorted from field by head trainer Greg Hauck. Not good.

JUPITER, Fla. -- Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter walked off the mound with two outs in the third inning today after sustaining an apparent injury, although he didn't seem to be in serious discomfort.
Head athletic trainer Greg Hauck approached the mound, with manager Tony La Russa not far behind and Carpenter departed without much discussion, having already thrown 32 pitches against the Florida Marlins.
Carpenter, who fanned two, walked one and gave up one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings, likely was going to face only one more hitter anyway. The 35-year-old Carpenter is the probable Opening Day starter for the Cardinals, who already have lost co-ace Adam Wainwright for the season with Tommy John elbow surgery.
Mitchell Boggs got the final out of the third as the Cardinals maintained a 4-0 lead.

Trainer out to see Boggs on mound. La Russa instructing the bullpen to get somebody up and warming. Boggs leaving with trainer. WTF

Oh boy, hopefully it's not serious. The Cards could be in serious trouble if Carpenter goes down for any significant amount of time.

    1:30 p.m. update:
JUPITER, Fla. -- Chris Carpenter, the first of two Cardinals pitchers to leave today's game with injury, sustained what was termed a mild left hamstring strain.
Mitchell Boggs relieved him and had to leave the game because of a lower back strain.
Carpenter, who left the Cardinals' game with Florida with two out in the third inning, said, "I throw and I felt a twinge. I couldn't throw the next pitch. I couldn't even put my foot on the ground. I wasn't going to try to get through it."
Though he has had many injuries in his career, Carpenter said he never had experinced a hamstring strain. With that in mind, he said he had no idea how he would be treated but he said that when the trainers examned him, "they weren't too concerned," he said.
Carpenter said he felt the leg give on the 31st of his 32 pitches. He gave up one hit and a walk in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

At a minimum, today's strain would appear to alter Carp's throw program for next couple weeks. Said there was no way he could've gone on.

carpenter has been injury prone if this is true and problems persist throughout the season then the cards are done, and pujols on his way to the cubs/royals.
