As a West Ham fan this is obviously terrible news. He didn't have a great season last year but there was enough to interest Man City as to his transfer availability. West Ham have a small squad and the central midfield position has already been weakened by the transfer of Declan Rice.

I don't expect a quick resolution to this case. Neither team, player, or FA are making statements. The last big soccer-betting case was Ivan Toney who is now serving an 8-month ban.

The investigation is believed to centre around Paqueta getting booked in games, with the bets being placed in Brazil, and the 25-year-old will now miss World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Bolivia in September.

Worse than just betting random games.... betting himself to get booked and placed in brazil.

I guess not. About 400k average google says.

Young, dumb players prob think it was impossible to get caught. No idea about how betting is monitored.

Davila is a weird one though. He prob earns near top of league salary.

Must have been making a lot from the bets.

Yea, that's not a real lot of money, although 10k is still pretty low

I could be paid 50 million a year, and I would still throw a game for $5

That's just the type of guy I am

Theyre not really throwing a game, just getting a yellow card on purpose.

Paquetta of west ham started the craze.... his hometown in brazil were all betting him big to get yellow and he got a bunch around that time.

Was investigated gone cold, like most do.

I purposely walked 15 batters in a row, while pitching in a little league game, for a sno cone from the concession stand guy

He was the brother of the opposing team's coach

I was investigated, but never charged

Technically this is spot fixing rather than match fixing. it's ensuring a prop bet hits rather than the win/lose outcome of a game. It's the easiest and most common form of fixing in football/soccer, which is more difficult to prove and convict. The highest profile soccer player known to have engaged in it is Matt Le Tissier who confessed to trying to fix the Under of a '1st time of the ball out of play' prop.

How global network of police uncovered alleged soccer betting sting

It was 21 identical rapid-fire bets in just one minute, placed thousands of kilometres away, that set the stage for the biggest corruption scandal in Australian soccer.

In December 2023, a South American crime syndicate, headed by a man police dubbed The Controller, allegedly placed the bets on a low-key game involving the southwestern Sydney A-League team Macarthur FC.

The punters wanted Macarthur to be handed more than 3.5 yellow cards in the one game — and they allegedly paid team captain Ulises Dávila to help them pull it off.

As the bets were placed, police allege an alert popped up in Birmingham on the network of the United Kingdom Gambling Commission, the organisation tasked with monitoring suspicious betting activity at home and abroad.

The alert led to police uncovering another yellow card-manipulated game and another two failed attempts — what investigators allege is the tip of the iceberg.

Some bookies would always offer it. But this sure shows how riggable spot betting is.

So many times I said to my dad that he must be deliberately trying to get himself booked. If I had been asked to guess at 1 player in the EPL who was spot-fixing I would instantly have named him. I was hoping Man City would still be interested in signing him this summer. Oh well.

he would have got 2-3mil from the transfer fee..

Dunno. He would have been flush regardless.
All I can think of is either he pressured from mafia from home to do it (brazil)... I think xhaka used this excuse when he got investigated for ONE time yellow card... everyone bet it.

Or it was just a rumor and everyone just ran with it and bet him carded every game thinking it was fixed... but just coincence he got the cards.

West Ham are a financially ascending club. The club doesn't have especially rich owners. The money base comes from being a very popular club that now has a stadium that can generate income. West Ham play at what was the London Olympic stadium in 2012. The capacity when West Ham moved in was about 52,000 and people said West Ham wouldn't fill it. They were wrong. The capacity has since been increased to 62,600 and it's at capacity for every EPL game. West Ham are #2 in the EPL for home attendance, and #8 in Europe. The club's transfer spending has reflected their increased income.

Lucas Paquetá is reportedly earning £7.8M per season, (as per Spotrac):
