Price has a better argument because he has been through the fire. Don't discredit yourself bro. Neither choice would be in the "hilarious" category, if anything your choice of Shields over Verlander would be hysterical.Comment -

#2597Managers also think things like RBIs and how many wins a pitcher has are indicative of skill. Shields pitches against SIGNIFICANTLY better competition and sports a SIERA only .25 behind. Shields is also nearly impossible to steal against, I think they've got 1 off him all year. Shields regularly pitches against the 2 best offenses in baseball plus toronto and baltimore. Verlander's division opponents consisnt of cleveland, wsox, royals, twins.
Price actually has a worse argument because you can steal off him. The stolen base is literally removed from the game when shields pitches. That takes away a huge reason that many hitters are considered productive. Most leadoff hitters in baseball turn into average joes against shields

#2598If saying Verlander and Kershaw are better than Strasberg means I "don't understand baseball," then I guess I don't.
I get the feeling you don't even watch games. Just study stats. Am I right? I asked if you'd seen these cats from SF and COL pitch and you basically laughed at me. How's that over coming?Comment -

#2599Verlander gets the chunk of his games against the bottom feeding offenses. Shields gets it against 2 of the best offenses in baseball in the past decade plus two other average-above avg offensesComment -

#2602The argument wasn't about Shields, who I agree is a Top-4 pitcher in baseball (Verlander, Kershaw, Shields, Jared Weaver). It's re: Strasberg.Comment -

#260475 innings, I know(yes i've seen research on this), is a significant sample size for a pitcher beginning his career. That's where the disagreement we have liesComment -

#2605MLB 9/17/11
Play #1
Mets/Braves under (7.5)(-115) 1x (Locked)
Play #2
TB/Boston under (8.5)(-115) 1x (Locked)
Play #3
Yanks/Blue Jays under (9)(+100) 1x (Locked)
Play #4
Angels/Orioles under (8.5)(-105) 1x (Locked)
I missed out on the 9 and could have saved a few cents under 8.5, but I'm going to take a shot here. My model has it at 8.1, so we don't have a ton of value here, but it's going to take a score of 9 to beat us so I still like it. Britton is easily the Orioles best starter with a WAR of 2.5 and he has never faced anyone on the Angels before. Santana is coming off a rought start against the Yanks, but should be fresh after only throwing 99 pitches. The wind is blowing directly in at 10 mph and the ump has a high strike rate around 63.5%. I'm rolling with the under for 1x. Good luck.
Pirates/Dodgers under (7)(-105) 1x (Locked)
Both team totals are juiced to the under and Pinny just went to -109 and plus money on the over despite over 70% on the over. McDonald has never faced this Dodgers lineup, can get some strikeouts and will be primed to pitch well against his old team. Lilly, on the other hand, has picked up over the last half of the season improving his FIP throughout that span. He has found success against these Pirates hitters in the past and I suspect he does well tonight. The wind is a non-factor and the ump Timmons is a slight under guy throughout his career. I'm rolling with the under for 1x. Good luck.Comment -

#2616Punchers chance. Mayweather, albeit a dick is one of the games true masters. He was born in the ring, has all the angles, all the tricks. BUT, he is getting older and hasn't fought in over a year...Ortiz can't carry his jockstrap skill wise, but he is young/dumb and full of well...anyway...he has a chance of physically imposing himself. The way the ref handles Floyd's defense (he uses his shoulder and elbow to fend off) could be a factor. Most likely you will see Ortiz seemingly overwhelm Floyd for a few rounds mauling (although in replay you will see few flush shots really land) and then Floyd will start to pot shot him and break him down.
Most likely scenario, but the fight game is full of surprises
AS a side, Ortiz reportedly will have about a 15 lb weight advantage tonight.Last edited by Redscot; 09-17-11, 09:16 PM.Comment -
