Cole has pitched 9 times against the Cubs. Pirates are 8-1 in those games

Yeah, and Arrieta has a 0.75 ERA in five starts against the Pirates this season. Elias Sports Bureau research notes that’s tied for the lowest ERA a pitcher has had in the regular season against a team he’d go on to face that postseason. They're slugging .176 against him. Slugging.

Cole has a 2.88 career ERA vs. Cubs; 2.13 this season.

This is a no bet game. This can come down to the bullpen. According to the odds, there is a slight value on Pirates but can't go against Arrieta for a slight value. And the cubs line is some what inflated because of Arieta's run. Even if Arieta had one or two rough outing in the last weeks, this line would be -110 on both sides.

This could be the best elimination game pitching matchup in playoff history.

Arrieta at -125 is where the value is. Overanalysis is not your friend in this game. He is in that zone that some truly great pitchers get into where he's basically unbeatable, plus he is a fitness freak who can pitch a complete game on any night, especially a high-adrenaline one like tonight. PIT will be lucky to get two hits, much less two runs.

PIT's only chance is to keep this one 0-0 or 1-1 into extra innings, where they have the better bullpen. But that is a huge IF. Arrieta's ERA is better second-half than Clayton Kershaw, except he does it without all the leg-jerk misdirection and ball-hiding tricks. Cole will need to pitch a perfect game to beat him - which he is capable of - but Arrieta is almost like Sandy Koufax, you have a reasonable expectation of a no-hitter every time he takes the mound.

Pitt and the under.. Home team dogs have to start cashing sooner or later..

Yankees lost at home as the slight dog, not sure that happens again tonight. These games are tricky to call though.

CHI scores first -155.... hit yesterday with HOU score first -150. Great bet, Arrieta will probably go quite a few innings before being threatened, Cubs bat first, lots of HR hitters....

The Cubs will not let Chicago down tonight. They'll let their city down later in the DS. It's the Cub way.

Cole is something like 40-20 career as a pitcher. Hence no slouch.

Jack is the best pitcher this year. Without Jake Cubs are sitting at home.

However Pirates have experience and had their sites on getting here and going further. I believe the stronger willed team prevails and that is Pittsburgh.

I expect the stage to affect Jake tonight just enough to allow Pirates to get the win.

So my money is on the home team that knows what to expect tonight.

This will be a high stress game for the young cubbies. That will be the difference.

It will be rocking in Pittsburgh.

Did you hear how loud Yankee stadium was last night for the first couple innings ? This is the playoffs and the fact that Cole has been getting hit giving up 3 runs to these same Cubs in Sep and 2 more the month before when Jake has shut them out in September and only given up 1 one in two other games while shutting them out for 8 innings twice and 7 once .... Im going with the guy that has more shutouts than anyone else in the National league and a 13-1 road record including a shutout win in Pits house ..... Cubs 5 Pirates if they're luck 1

Considering the Cubs made the Wild Card by 13 games clear over the Giants, I kinda doubt that's true. No player is worth 13 games.

Biggest concern for the Cubs is defense. In what could be a 2-1 type game, 1 key error can turn the game.

But I don't expect Jake to be rattled one bit.

I expect Cole to issue some walks, but can Cubs execute w/RISP?

For those who think Cole is Arrieta's =, Cole has a .239 BAA; Arrieta .185. If a batter is .185 you say he if horrible/awful and doesn't belong in anyone's lineup, but a batter who is .239 is close to average and not that unusual.

McCuthcen is the only Pirate who has touched Arrieta. If Pirates are to strike, he needs to be the one.

Thanks for your input, I always love your insights. SBR is grateful to have you.

As for Arrieta he won 22 games. So you say the difference is 13 games?

Well if Jake boy was so dominate the others wouldn't had pushed them selfs as hard. 13 win pitcher replacement. Is not easy to find. Somebody else may had won10-11 maybe 12. Bottom line this guy was the reason the team excelled.

I am excited for tonight's game will or should be fun.
