Cole has a career 7-1 record in nine starts against the Cubs, including 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA in four starts this year.

Flip a coin and pick a team. I flipped a coin last night and it landed on Astros. Today it landed on Pirates.

Therefore, you should take the Cubs, right? After all, coin flips are right 50/50 and yesterday's was a winner.

Arietta is where my money is at. Rather play the Pirates in the DS though.

Has anyone noticed Cole's numbers have gotten worse as the season has worn on?

    April 1.76
    May 2.43
    June 2.35
    July 2.40
    Aug 3.13
    Sept 3.29

    Pre-ASB 2.30
    Post-ASB 2.98

Not poor, by any means, but some regression. Also, Cole's day/night splits:

    Day: 2.05 ERA, 0.94 WHIP (13 games)
    Night 3.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP (19 games)

Just the opposite, Arrieta has been better at night:

    Day: 2.16 ERA, 0.92 WHIP (13 games)
    Night: 1.51 ERA, 0.83 WHIP (20 games)

Arrieta has been better on the road (1.60 vs. 1.97 ERA) ). Cole has been worse at home (2.83 vs. 2.39 ERA)

Comparing Arrieta in road night games vs. Cole in home night games -- today's situation -- the difference is pretty dramatic. And that's full season, not even taking into account the opposite directional arcs for their seasons.

Arietta seems too good to be true, like he's due to get hit sooner or later.

There ya go ^^^^^ thats what I noticed ...also noticed that the Cubs got him out in 6 innings and scored 3 runs in September ... while Jake shut them out for 8 in September before being pulled for the closer ....

Away teams are 8-2 in Nelson last 10. You may want to look closer next time.

Most likely correct. And if they do, it probably means they've given up a bunch of runs and will lose anyway.

Cubs pen is unlikely to be a factor, unless the game goes into extras.

I've analyzed everything I could find, and there is just no way on earth I can bet against Arrieta. It's Cubs for me. With a smaller FF Cubs and a small play on the under.

The average for CG for this season in MLB is 3. CHI has 6 total. Arrieta has 4 of those. I don't think it is out of the question for it to happen.

That's because those were not elimination games. He was pulled after 84 and 72 pitches in his last 2 starts to save him. Not tonight. He wasn't getting taken out because he was struggling or tiring. No manager these days is going to allow his starter to go 9 full very often during the regular season. 4 was tied for MLB lead. This game is just a different animal. And so is Arrieta. If he needs to go 130, he'll do it.

When it comes to that, regular season stats mean shit. Playoffs is a different animal. Pitch counts not the same.

Anyone remember Curt Schilling for the D'Backs in '01. He went 22-6 that season (sound familiar? same as Arrieta's record).

He went on to 3 CG's in the playoffs and the WS MVP.
