It can be so subtle sometimes as to why this or that did not work out. With this trainers history of doing this, while sometimes it can just be, last chance to show us something, other times it is something really tangible that took place that might or might not show up on film. So because the trainer has done this with positive results, I hope that it is a real thing that occurred. Sometimes it is a gut feeling. Sometimes very real. Not sure here but my guess is the horse didn't turn as hair as they say and acted like he never ran at all post race.

Totally agree that if this was a points race, I would not support it at all. I am assuming it is not that but we never know the entire story for sure. Your point is spot on IMO.

    agree .. probably fine

Hey STR: let's do Monday morn QB on the ARK Derby? What is your opinion on the #9 Cornucopian being sent off at 4/5 running his 2nd race and at 9 panels off a 6F score at first asking. He got caught in a blistering speed duel with the #5 and faded badly. I guess you can say an ambitious placement by Mr. Baffert? THX in advance

The public always over bets him. I understand why, but that is what this was.

Maggie !!! Anyone that reads this thread knows how much respect I have for her as well as her mom and dad. Her dad was quietly brilliant in how he handled a bunch of the claimers he had over the years. He would have been on my very short list of trainers I would want to have train for me in Md. way back when if I did not train myself. Her mom was and I'm sure still is, awesome. And Maggie? I am so happy for her. I am proud to say I know her and held her when she was a baby. She is terrific at what she does. As good an eye for a horse as there is.
So when Maggie said that, and she is right, as usual, that was most likely her way of showing the horses vulnerability without saying it.
She is spot on with the looks. This horse is built a like a pepper pot as they used to say. Sprinter body with a world of talent. If the inside horse takes back, he probably wins because of that sheer talent. But when that duel developed, he was toast .
I'm sure he will be back and most likely be able to get a mile just looking at him. But without more to know, I would be just guessing.

Does the trainer have any other Derby horses this year? I honestly have no idea . If he does, yes, he was taking a shot for the owner or the horse. If he does NOT have any other options than he was taking a shot for himself as well as the others.

That's my take EZ. And if you notice, I never mentioned his name. Just my way of showing the respect I think he deserves in this game.

                  Brilliant horseman? Yes, IMO.

                  Anything else? No, IMO.

                  Thanks EZ.

^ OK STR Thx for your thoughts. Yeah Maggie is my favorite paddock reporter by far. I always listen to her takes and take into account what she says. Great insight provided by her on usually the NYRA circuit. THX again.

                        My girl Wisconsin Gal.

I really admire the fight in her every time she runs.

Horses like her made it a little easier to wake up at 4:45 AM.

As you listen to her, see if something she says might be subtle or a read between the lines thing, like this one, and see if you hear it pre race and follow that. I think you will be amazed at her accuracy.

Real good job hearing that beforehand EZ !

although it hasn't happened in a while she's capable of passing horses and with the wide post might be stalking today .. 2nd at big odds last 2 times she ran that way..still feel the water's kind of deep here but will be interesting to see if she changes her tactics ..might have to by default

                                    Straight No Chaser Workout Report

Straight No Chaser had his final breeze on Sunday morning over the Meydan dirt course, covering four furlongs in :46 and change with a big gallop out. Trainer Dan Blacker who was onsite for the work reported, “he breezed like a rocket.” Dan has kept his workload fairly light in-between races given his travel but said, “I wanted to see him pick it up today and he sure did.”

Dan called our team right after the breeze and you could sense his confidence and excitement that your Champion remains on his game. We couldn't ask for anything more at this stage and the countdown officials begins for Dubai World Cup night. Post positions will draw on Wednesday.

I agree I think I really noticed it after the breeders cup.... then when he got off the plane in Saudi Arabia....just looked the part.
Pretty interesting to see how upbeat Dan Blacker is.... a little of it could be because of the program he started out with in Dubai and he has a horse competing in their big night.

she (WG)was making a move and just kind of pooped out @ around 60-1..my thought was avg loss in her 3 prior races (all listed stakes) was about 6L and today's loss was by that same amount ..this would make her competitive in a high clm tag n2l race and imo that's where she belongs

only CF (6-1 final) 2nd start, still finding his way and he ran a very even race .. dirt debut wasn't bad and considering that wouldn't be surprised to see him back on it in his next start ..if not vs msw sure he'll get it done at some point vs maiden claimer's

                                                            Caldera Breeze and Plan Update

Caldera returned to the work tab at Oaklawn today, breezing a solo five furlongs in 1:01.20.(3/17)

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has decided to bypass the G1 Blue Grass S. and instead point Caldera to the $200K Bathhouse Row S. at Oaklawn Park going 1 1/8 miles on Apr. 19. That race carries with it an automatic berth into the G1 Preakness S. Rafael Bejarano is booked to ride.

The Blue Grass is coming up a very tough race, and it would be ambitious to try and take on that group of horses on two weeks’ rest off of Caldera’s last outing.

The Bathhouse Row, on the other hand, gives us much better spacing coming out of the Louisiana Derby and should hopefully set Caldera up to be the fresh, new shooter heading into the Preakness if all goes well. It’ll certainly be an easier field, a good spot to let Caldera build his confidence back up, and we also like the idea of running him back at Oaklawn.

We were game to try the Blue Grass if The Coach felt strongly that it was the right move, but we do feel this is a more prudent and realistic path that will hopefully pay off with a stakes win in a few weeks and a big rest of the spring and beyond.

Note that today’s breeze did not really impact the decision—it was decided before the work.

I'm happy with the race change! While the thought of the derby was nice.. It's still better for the horse.

It's still better for the horse.
more sensible thing to do .. have a hunch they might be pointing garamond (longshot derby future) for the preakness also ..he's not running in the wood memorial
