Problem with the whole theory is that the AHL players come into camp hungrier, probably little bit better shape and are going to give max effort when on the ice as they are battling to have a chance to make the team or at least impress.

Plus these teams don't give a shit about pre-season. No point risking injury for a game that doesn't matter.
And like Rude said, the Detroit lineup already has a guaranteed place in the team, they don't have to impress anyone.
