    Andre Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager

Chelsea to appoint Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas

Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas is to join Chelsea following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in May.
The 33-year-old Portuguese, who has worked with ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, guided Porto to the Europa League title last season. The Portuguese club also clinched a domestic double, winning the league and the league cup.Guus Hiddink has also been linked with a return to Chelsea, where he won the FA Cup as a caretaker manager in 2009.Neither Chelsea nor Porto have made an official statement about the future of Villas-Boas.

    Maybe, but others say different

FC Porto insist they have not received an offer from Chelsea that meets the €15 million release clause in the contract of treble-winning coach Andre Villas-Boas.

Portuguese news agency Lusa claimed on Monday morning that the Blues had met the financial demands of the Liga club and were on the brink of appointing the 33-year-old as Carlo Ancelotti's successor.

Porto responded to the speculation with a statement that denied they had received a successful bid from Chelsea and that they had no indication from Villas-Boas that he wishes to leave the Estadio do Dragao.

"FC Porto, at the request of the CMVM [Portuguese stock market], hereby informs the market that the coach Andre Villas-Boas, as well as several players, has a termination clause.

"To date, we have not received any communication that this clause will be exercised, nor that the coach agrees to such an aim."

Villas-Boas won the 2010-11 Portuguese League, Portuguese Cup and the UEFA Europa League in his debut season as a manager and was immediately linked with a move to one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Porto president Pinta da Costa said on Monday the club were powerless to prevent Villas-Boas from leaving should his release clause be activated.

He said: "If someone deposits €15million into our account and he wants to go, we cannot do anything because it is something that is contractually specified.''
Villas-Boas became the youngest coach to win a European trophy when his Porto side beat Braga 1-0 in Dublin at the end of last season and despite insisting at the time that he was happy to remain at the club and build a team to compete in the Champions League his future has been the subject of much speculation.

On Sunday, Inter Milan ruled out a move for the highly-rated coach. "Villas-Boas had this clause that we certainly were not going to tackle," Inter president Massimo Moratti said.
Chelsea have been searching for a new manager since dispensing with Ancelotti on May 22 and it was thought that Turkey coach Guus Hiddink, who won the FA Cup as temporary Blues boss in 2009, was first choice to replace the Italian.

However, Villas-Boas, a former assistant to Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, could be destined to follow in the footsteps of his mentor, with whom he has been favourably compared, if the blues increase their offer.

During his time as part of Chelsea coaching team from 2004 to 2007, Villas-Boas was responsible for putting together the detailed technical reports on every opponent that was one of the hallmarks of Mourinho's reign.

Missed this thread, didnt mean to open the other one!

Small Timer - totally agree with you, sure this guy has some pedigree, but (and it is not confirmed yet) if this goes through it has just more than a touch of the 'emotional hire' about it. I think Abramovich regrets hugely the way he kicked Jose out and sees this guy as his second chance.. Villa Boas was an understudy to Robson and has many similarities to Jose... only Jose was a level above him in terms of what he had won when he moved to Chelsea. First manager in this window, first manager out in the new season!?

I think the most money ever paid to sign a manager. Good choice if they let him work more than 2 years..

scolari won the world cup with brazil and couldnt make it at chelsea, 2 losses and the pressure is on.

the new coach needs to get rid of the dead wood

players like drogba who refused to play for scolari.

he has had a great season at porto but that is way different from chelsea.

i agree 100% he is not proven.

You guys seem to forget hes been at Chelsea before. Hes worked for Abromovich and is familiar with the club, this gives him a HUGE advantage over more experienced managers. This also buys him a lot of slack with Abromovich.

dumping Drogba would be almost as stupid as rebuying Torres knowing how he played post transfer.

Roman is so fickle, it could benefit him, or it may be a non-factor; look at it like this:Roman is the same guy who terminated Avram despite results that even Jose wasn't getting from Chelsea...a 6-5 penalty shootout was the only thing standing in the way of the Champions League title. Like the praised Mourinho, Grant never lost at home with Chelsea, and Roman liked him enough to offer him another role with the team...which he promptly rejected.

Bottom line is, if you manage Chelsea, don't get too used to it..you could probably go undefeated and lose your job.

Interesting appointment from Chelsea. It seemed nailed on that Hiddink would take the job last week.
