    Arrieta Cy Young and MVP?

One could make a very strong case for Jake Arrieta for MVP.

Now before you jump ugly on me with the no pitcher should be allowed to qualify for MVP, I'm usually in that camp too, however I will make exceptions. Usually I'm voting for the player who plays in 150 games rather than 33. Usually.

First off, the operative word in MVP is Valuable.
The only other candidate in the MVP award is Bryce Harper.
Yes, Harper had the break through year everybody was waiting for, having a monster season so far.
However Harper and his Nationals are not sniffing the playoffs this season.

Arrieta and his Cubs are going to the playoffs this year, and without Arietta's mind blowing 21 consectutive quality starts in his last 21 starts, Cubs are not going to the playoffs either.
So, ask yoursef this, who was more valuable to their team, Arrieta or Harper.

Look at Jake's last six starts, hell look at his last two months, the only reason Arrieta does not go nine innings last night is because the Cubs took 30 minutes that inning to hit that inning and he was stiffening up a little bit.

Who goes nine and eight innings this late in the season time in, time out?
Steve Carlton and Jim Palmer did, but that was when real dude pitched, Arietta is pitching like Tom Seaver used to.

    Harper's 41-96-.336 is a monster season.
41 jimmy jacks and only 96 RBI?
Can you say "meaningless solo shots"?
So I did myself a little research.
    Bases empty: 25 HR's
Runners in Scoring Postion with 2 outs: .256

To be fair,he's .409 with runner on third base and less that 2 outs with 24 RBI.
So he does know how to get that run home and did it.

If i'm voting MVP this season, I'm voting Arrieta was more valuable to the Cubs than Harper was to the Nationals, Harper is playing golf next week, because of Arrieta the Cubs are playing the Pirates (the same Pittsburgh team he was just about perfect against last nigh) in a winner take all play in wild card game.
Without Jake, Cubs are teeing off with Bryce next week too.

    Arrieta is your MVP.

Nash hates the Jays too so you won't see any Josh Donaldson MVP threads from him.

If I had ten MVP votes, JD would get all ten of them.
Tulo and the rest were nice pieces, but Lawrie for Donaldson was a stroke of genius.
They threw in Graveman who will always be a meatball, and Sean Nolin, who I thought would prosper in that big ball park out there but hasn't yet.

Donaldson, (and the over achieving starting pitching) is the main reason Toronto is going back to the playoffs.
I always thought the front office was solid there in Toronto, I'm surprised it's been a while between post seasons.

Don't hate the Jays dude, I respect what they did in the 90's, the Joe Carter home run was one of my favorite jacks off all time, and Jack Morris would always pitch his ass off for them for a couple of years.

agreed, .500 at best and likely at the bottom of the league. The Dodgers' offense is not anything to write home about.

Over his last 19 starts (since Jun 17):

141 IP/14 ER = 0.89 ERA (this should not be possible)
    2 HR's (he's also hit 2 HR himself!)
    74 hits + 27 BB = 0.716 WHIP (another impossible stat)
    17 wins, 2 losses

This is probably the best extended run for a SP in anybody's lifetime.

BTW, did anybody know that Dwight Gooden has the best single-season ERA (1.53) since 1968?

If Nash wasted as much time popping a cork in his fat wife instead of writing up these useless and worthless posts she wouldn't be slinging her GUNT to half the neighborhood.

Talking about MVP when he's not even going to win the Cy Young in all likelihood lol

This feels like last year's AL Cy Young race. It looked like Felix all the way till September until he regressed a bit and Kluber finished the year on fire. Same thing happening here with Arrieta blacking out and Greinke slipping a bit towards the end.

He may not even win Cy Young, Greinke has a pretty good case and Bryce has MVP locked up - highest OPS in a season since Barry Bonds. You take him off the Nationals and they are probably a 90+ loss team.

...which means they'd get a better draft pick for missing the playoffs.

Personally, I believe the MVP should always come from a team that qualifies for the playoffs. This is for any team sport. Maybe there should be a different award for best individual performance. But to me, "valuable" means the performance helped lift the team to advance.

I agree, Harper will win, I just don't agree with it.

As for Cy Young, short of a blowup in the last start, Arrieta has it locked up.

Yogi Berra, MVP: Even though he is dead, look what he's still doing for the Yankees. He's doing more for them than the players that are alive. His funeral was packed this morning. Is there a rule that says you have to be breathing to win this award? I think it's a no-brainer.

Without a doubt. Cubs have won Arrieta's last 9 road starts and 15 of 17 on the year. No such thing as a sure thing, but those are some pretty strong numbers. Granted, Pitt is 11-3 at home with Cole.

Should be a good one. I'd say Cubs in the -130 to -140 range.
