A majority of baseball stadiums are filled nightly. Also, each MLB team has a sweet TV deal. Most own their own networks like NESN, YES or some sort of FSN/Comcast affiliate. MLB does it right. They are financially sound, they have guaranteed contracts and are able to hold interest of their true fanbase for 7-8 months.

Also, Ellsbury is not an average player. He consistently hits .300 and when he's healthy, he can steal 50+ bases every year. Oh yeah, he's a Gold Glove centerfielder.

its just money JJ. If the Yankees don't over pay they would never get these players.

Steinburner has an unlimited amount of money.

He bascially has a money machine in his basement.

National TV ratings are one thing, but local TV ratings are huge for major league baseball teams. Hence the large local TV contracts.

MLB is the only major sport not increasing revenue.

Sports business is booming right now, and MLB is regressing.

We're about a decade away from Soccer being more popular in this country than MLB.

Your last statement is as asinine as stating that water is dry. Soccer may get more viewing but it will never surpass the major 4 in the USA. Not in any of our lifetimes.

Heard people saying the same thing 10 years ago and 10 years before that as well....

    Never gonna happen.

If you projected out current trends as it relates to revenue in each sport, 10 years is a conservative estimate.

MLB is the only major sport in the world not making huge increases in revenue over this latest sports money boom.

Soccer and college sports are making unprecedented money right now.

They guy is your prototypical lead off man. He's not going to hit 20 HR's or drive in 100 runs.

He's well above an average player and he's a Gold Glove winner.

However, I do agree that the Yankees overpaid him. I'm not too crazy about the 6 years/$120M the Sox offered him either. I would have liked to see the Sox give him 4 years/$72M to just keep him here.

This must be the 2nd shift JJ behind the keyboard. Thread turned into an epic fail.

    162 games.

Compare that to any other sport and there is your answer.

    Lets use the Mariners.
Average attendance last season. Lets just say the average price was $30
    21,747 people * $30=652,410

So 82 home games. 53 million dollars in ticket sales. Their player payroll was 74 million. I'm sure they made the extra 20 million they needed to break even in parking/food/tv/jerseys/league money/etc.

As much as it doesn't make sense (why do people watch this sport?) and it is a horrible sport, I'm sure all these baseball teams are making plenty of money.
