#1861Playing this small on the side on a hunch.
Donskoy +180
Understood he's a Russian who might be better on other surfaces, but Clement as a large favorite? Guessing he's getting at least 30 cents for the tournament being played in France. Might be a runaway, but Donkey, Jr. for small on the side.Comment -

#1863True that. I mainly took him as I said because Clement was being way over valued IMO. I meant to do the same against Kudla in Dallas. That kid was over -200 .... realized his opponent had not done much in his career, but to give a teenager with little experience that tag is ridiculous. Kudla got crushed too in straights.Comment -

#1865That's why I like Challengers in a nutshell. Doesn't always work your way, but you can find a lot of prices that are simply outrageous based on either one upset or perceived home court advantage.Comment -

#1866Taking another flyer here on the dog ...
Dallas Challenger: Reix +120
Reix draws the tall power serving Van der Merwe. VDM won when Sock retired yesterday due to dehydration. Reading more about it, seems Sock may have had food poisoning - gotta find out where he ate and go there! That is what sticks out to me is that he dropped a set to a guy who was having trouble moving and serving. VDM pumped out plenty of aces, but his serve inexplicably dropped in a couple service games against an immobile object like Sock yesterday. Reix played a tight 3-setter and took out Kuznetsova who had beaten Querrey previously. Reix is an ex-NCAA guy from Clemson and hasn't had much tour success, but he's shown some pop on-serve this week and that should keep him in this match against a guy like VDM who is all serve and little more. I think the longer the match goes, the better shot he's got here as VDM looks like he could wear down in a longer match.Comment -

#1871I think Lu beats him. Lu is better than him at everything IMO and would have to have a poor match - not that that sort of thing doesn't happen, but I think Mitchell will have to serve a lot better than he has recently and Lu would have to drop down a notch.Comment -

#1875Bloggin' about Soeda-Dodig ....
Davis Cup: Opening Day Continuous Blog ... Davis Cup play kicks off this evening, 11pm ET for those state-side like myself. The first rubbe...
The opening tilt as the Japanese host Croatia is a fascinating one for me. Soeda is playing some solid tennis to start 2012 off. He made the semifinals in Chennai and then won the Honolulu Challenger a couple weeks ago. Dodig has the more recent work on this indoor surface, having won a couple matches at Zagreb. He's always had a big serve, but has trouble harnessing his ground strokes some times which has led to an inconsistent career thus far. Dodig has been poor in Davis Cup play at 2-7 overall, but several of those came when he was a very young player. In the past two years, he's 1-2 with losses to Kohlschreiber & Kevin Anderson, nothing to be ashamed about. Soeda is 17-4 in his Davis Cup career, but the majority of those matches have come against very low level competition from some of the worst countries in this competition. I don't think there's any added pressure on Soeda here. I believe the Japanese believe Nishikori can win them any singles rubber in this series, so Soeda should be going out here with the mindset that he can really help put an early dent in Croatia's plans of advancing with a win. His return game will be the obvious key here. If he can serve well and get into Dodig's serve, I like the Japanese to draw first blood.

#1885Thoroughly disappointed with Soeda. Not that he is going to lose, but probably in straights - very disappointing. Had high hopes for the Japanese, but I have a feeling they may wind up getting crushed.
Davis Cup Parlay: Monaco + Ferrero [-135]
Monaco draws Petzschner on clay, a distinct advantage to me for Monaco. Petzschner is under 50% for his career on this surface and is very inexperienced in Davis Cup play [3 lifetime matches]. Monaco, we know this is his preferred surface, and he's already won a title on dirt this season in Chile. Monaco was 3-3 in Davis Cup activity in 2011 with losses to Nadal, Tipsarevic and Ungur [dead rubber]. Seems a bit odd the Germans chose clay here as the Argentines have a wealth of solid players on this surface. Monaco should find a way. Ferrero against Kukushkin on clay? Mis .. match. Only thing I see here is JCF could start slow since he's got very little match play this year, but Kukushkin left his unexpected Australian Open run with a hip flexor issue and his clay resume against veteran dirt ballers is not good. He might take a set if Ferrero is rusty, but I'm quite certain JCF has been prepping for this since he lost in Melbourne.
Updating the blog with an upset watch for Monday also. Much obliged again for any who read it.

#1887Quimper Challenger: Bautista-Agut [-120]
Bautista-Agut is up against Brands here. Brands was very lucky to survive last round as he played very poorly. Brands could well win this tournament, but I flat out get to the point in most tournaments where I don't trust him and this is that spot. Bautista-Agut is fully capable of taking this if Brands plays somewhere close to his last match.Comment -
