Hadn't really looked at that match at all. I think tevari was on it though. Mr. WTA he is.

Quite done with Zemlja at Slams. Keep expecting more from him and he keeps burning my money.

I would avoid those doubles matches EP. Too hard to predict, and you pay crazy amounts of juice.

My sulking has propelled Zemlja back into the match. You can avoid them, I like them my man. You pick your spots just like anything else..

So unimpressed with Raonic so far. He looks so off and Sijsling is not really making any mistakes. So much for my big hope of him making the semis.

I don't think Raonic is bettable until he shows some life on hard courts maybe. New coach might help, but it will take time to get his head out of his ass.

Zemlja cashes the spread somehow, some way. Finally made me feel good about backing him at a Slam. Now I hope he sends Mr.Sharapova home with the Missus.

Looks like my dogs will be failing again. Haven't had a ton of luck with them, but hitting the one unit plays and losing the half unit plays on dogs grinds out a profit ... so I'll take that any day I suppose.

FYI - rain supposed to be moving in here soon, light showers and tomorrow. So after some nice days to start, looks like rain delay mode is coming.

Cleared the bigs again and lost the half pint dog plays. Doubles play pending and that will carry to tomorrow. No way that one gets in today. Zemlja not finished, but it's locked in as a win regardless of the outcome now as long as they both finish the match.

Right. – and then there's grass which is signifcantly faster than HC, is it not? Even from the baseline, shouldn't aggressive power hitting be favored more on grass than on HC?

Depends on the courts. Halle Tournament is fast. Wimbledon not so fast. Eastbourne & Dutch tournament, not that fast. Some slower hard courts out there, but most are very fast.

So you're saying not all grass courts used on the tours are faster than all of the hard courts? :O

Outside Halle, I don't know that any of the other grass tourneys rate faster than the slowest hard court. Here's a good site to look at regarding court speeds.
Wow! I thought the speed was the main feature of Grass. I also thought the bounce was related to speed (high speed, low bounce).
Isn't that true then?

I don't think so. Pretty sure, fast = high bounce and slow = low bounce .. generally.

Oh come on! Now you're kidding me. The ball bounces the highest on red clay, does it not?
The ball stays the lowest on grass because it's the fastest, which makes sense: Less energy is exerted into motion on impact and therefore the ball isn't as affected.

Depends on the clay's dryness/dampness and temperature. Dry & hot = high bounce. Damp = low.

Have you ever played tennis, EP?
Why you think clay specialists play generally lower pace huge topspin balls standing 3 meters behind the baseline, while grasscourters generally add a little spin to the ball taking it as fast as possible, usually before it reaches the top of the bounce? Also why is service+volley and slices so effective on grass?
The fact is:
Grass is one of the fastest surfaces if not the fastest, the bounce is one of the lowest.
Clay is one of the slowest with its really high bounce. The dampness has a little effect on height of the bounce, wet balls (no pun inteded) are slower as they're more hairy (..).
Try to think about it and watch the matches.
...if you're trolling, gj.

That's more the idea I had, which is why I was assuming Gulbis should be at least as good on the lawns as the courts. Eagle's just confusing me so much lol...
I appreciate your replies though, so long as they are serious (I believe they are).

Facts are there. Look at court speed ratings, grass is nowhere near the fastest surface. You can check any site that has court speed ratings and see that. The ball skids and gives the feel of something faster, but as far as how the surface plays overall - hard still is fastest. Like I said all the grass courts play different, but outside of Halle - the speeds are generally medium-fast at best which might put them into the range of a slower hard court.
Dampness has a ton of effect on clay. It's why Nadal always hated cold/damp weather because it made the ball sit lower, like grass and he had to work more and his topspin did not work as well.
I can understand and accept that, but are you also saying that bounce isn't correlated to court speed itself?
I'm thinking: Less friction->less energy exerted upon impact->lower bounce->higher speed (since more energy stays within the pacing movement of the ball without changing direction as much).
I completely get and agree with the dampness point by the way.

I'm not a physics major, but certainly less friction would definitely equal a lower bounce. Maybe we can just agree that grass is pretty close to hard courts in speed and depending on how it's manicured and kept, certainly as with Halle there are some that are definitely faster than hard courts and vice versa, there are some hard courts because of the materials used and materials used as cushion beneath the surface that can play much slower and in effect might be slower than a clay court.
So many variaables in construction and material and unkeep now.

I can agree on that for all I know, but don't you think that lower bounce should correlate with higher speed, if the decreased friction is the cause of them both?
Regardless though, would you say grass courts result in a lower bounce more then they result in higher speed? Is there then something other than friction affecting the bounce (causing the balls to skid more on the grass)?
I think this is all very interesting, but like you say, very intricate...
