#8088Check out the accompanying video for a detailed Nakoma update from trainer Jena Antonucci. The filly has done well during her little breather at Saratoga, and is set to get back to jogging in the next 7-10 days.Nakoma Update
Vekoma certainly hasn't cooled off any. He had two more very nice maiden winners over the past week or so--including one who was named a 'TDN Rising Star'--and the filly Viggiedal who is bred on the exact same cross as Nakoma became stakes-placed at Saratoga last Sunday. Vekoma's got a bunch more maiden special weight entrants in the coming days as well as two more stakes runners at the Spa

When the Md. Million was introduced, they had a boys and girls Md. bred starter 8,500 as a stake each year. Nailed one of those with Over Fly long time ago. I loved the claiming game.
Thanks for the memory rerun Batt !
BTW, jump in and play that NFL 6 team game you posted in. You got an invite.Comment -

#8096In my early years of training, starter handicaps were a big deal. In Md. they ran a series of 1 1/16th - 1 1/4 with a 1/16th added every week over 4 weeks. I really enjoyed running in them if I had a horse that fit. Had a favorite or two in those years that won their shares. I couldn't run in all 4 as they were every 7 days. I thought it was too much and wanted something left for afterwards. Shocking in todays game. If the horse was winning them, or just missing, depending on severe weight adjustments, I would usually skip the 1 3/16's race on week 3 but run and hopefully win the 1st two and the last one. Did pretty well in those some years but other guys had the same idea so it sure was not every year. I really thought those were fun and the fans loved them.

#8097Horse updateStraight No Chaser returned to the work tab this morning at Del Mar, covering three furlongs in :38.20 under Juan Landeros. By intention, trainer Dan Blacker wanted this work to be on the slower side being his first work back. Juan, who has aboard Straight No Chaser almost every morning of his career, reported he felt great. While we still have plenty more tests to come, it was great to see our boy back in action today.https://cdnb-media.myracehorse.com/blog/video/IMG0524_1724616580365/MP4/IMG0524_1724616580365.mp4

#8099decided I'm not going to follow the big margin 2yo debut filly winners on thurs and friday .. for the record they are "with the angels" (thu) and "senza patrol" (fri)
going to stick with ...
world record (WR)
deterministic (DM)
headline numbers (HN) 3yo filly
chancer mcpatrick (CM) new
staying with HN even though she's a filly because I've been talking about her for a while, watched her for 2 races and she's a little further along as a 3yo
rather this stay manageable so can spend more time talking about the regulars which we already have..will only be colts going forward from here
any opinions on this are welcome str

#8104Without picking words apart and not knowing what is what, this is still very much up in the air I am afraid. Sometimes no news is good news. Let's hope he slowly but surely keeps improving Batt. It's about all we can do right now.
Here is hoping for good news knowing he is in good hands.Visceral continues to make positive strides while he has remained at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital. He still has a fluctuating temperature, but the previous abscess site and swelling seem to be much more manageable at this time. Dr. Korin Potenza also noted that the pain seems to have subsided. This is all a big relief for sure, but we still have a little ways to go before we are completely out of the woods.Visceral Update

I honestly feel of the 4 mentioned above that CM has the best shot of making a breeders cup race (juvenile) .. think all the others need more time to develop and will be better as 4 year olds ..if CM runs well or wins in a stakes at kee or a race like the champagne at aqueduct imo good chance he'll be going out to del marComment -

#8108OK, since this is Q & A, I'll ask one. If this has been asked elsewhere, someone can point me in that direction so as to not repeat.
My question has to do with Post Position. Some would think that the post (#1) is best because that's the shortest route. Counter is that #1 may not be best b/c that horse can get boxed in. It's more about getting position at the first turn. So, that's not my question.
My question is really about using adjacent horses in Exotics. True or False?: Exactas that use adjacent horses might be +EV.
The theory would be tied to how the pack breaks out of the gate. Let's say that 1 to 4 cluster and battle. If 5 and 6 break clean, they might have easier trips.
So that's my question. When you structure exactas, do you like to use adjacent horses? If you use adjacent horses, they could get similar trips (effectively getting correlated outcomes).Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -

On another note I remember "yonkers " used to have a big bias to the inside , Not so much today..... but the 1,2,3... seemed to have some nice hits once in awhile...Comment -

#8112I would rather spend more time (be fresher) with less of them ..of course if something pops up when they're back at aqu may add another ..will keep it to colts,expensive/well bred or both who win by a good margin and/or run very professionally in their debut ..not a wire job or easy sitiing just off a rapid pace..also consider a good effort ,encountering trouble without a win like WR

So that's my question. When you structure exactas, do you like to use adjacent horses? If you use adjacent horses, they could get similar trips (effectively getting correlated outcomes).
As a case in point, lets say there are 3 speeds in the race and going 2 turns so the break is fairly close to the 1st turn. The inside speed is a must go situation, the middle speed pretty close to that, and the outside speed has a choice to make as long as everyone breaks normally. Go hard, sit back and tuck in, or let the break and immediate situation call that shot. Most outside horses will play the situation to dictate the move.
When I was with C. **. a few weeks ago, he did not want to name the trainer but said he was a bigger name guy, and he said the instructions were, sit about 4 lengths off the speed and don't move until the 1/4 pole. While I think he knew what he meant in spirit, but you can't say that to a rider because we don't know if the 1st quarter mile will be in 22 or 24 and change. So you can't say what was said without at least saying, all things being equal and then what it is you want. Even then, it's kind of dumb. Especially to a world class rider like Chris.
So, back to your exact question, if the 1 goes to the lead, the two will follow behind? Maybe but will that horse show the same effort with dirt spray in it's face for two thirds of the race. Probably not if it is a true speed type horse. So it probably goes and now you have a duel.
So I put together the race if going long again, and I want to see where horses might be into the 1st turn and how hard they have to work to be there and stay there. Pace makes the race so if you are betting a closer, you want quick early fractions and a duel and slow fractions or reasonable fractions, if you are playing a speed horse. If you can set up the race and have an idea of how fast they might go early, the rest of it falls into place.
I would stick with finding early speed, position horses, and closers as well as deep closers. Those 4 categories. Go with what makes sense if it is whichever way you feel the race will set up. The quality of the horse means a lot, although a horses talent can and is hidden often times by compromised previous trips. I lean on doing that more than anything else.
Sometimes you might conclude that a horse just won't lose in your mind. That's fine. Play to win unless the price is not what you want. If it is not appealing play it on top only and find value with the underneath horse. You can try and analyze the trip that horse COULD get and see if it makes sense. Especially at a price.
There are a million little angles that players will play but I have found that if you can create a model or map of what the race should look like early, it takes a lot of guess work out of the race. Think of it as betting after 1/2 the race has been run. Sounds easier, and it is, a little, sometimes more, but try and foresee that at least as a tool in your handicapping belt, and I think it will help somewhat. And give it a month or so and don't expect immediate results necessarily. Remember, it's up to you to draw that map and the more you try , like most things, the better at it you will get.
I would start there.
Lastly, you can search this thread with the tool provided with key words to find more answers on this. Try words like solo speed, speed duel, deep closers, etc. See if that can shed more light on this.
Feel free to follow up Chucky.
All the best!Comment -
